I have just noticed something: In the very first round of the Guile v Claw they had, Daigo and Kawano had THE SAME situation. That time, Daigo went for a EX Flashkick, which was also successful. This surely adds up to the mindset in this great video.
@MoyosoreOgunbiyi

And what was even more Ballsy was that he did it AGAIN in the corner less than half a minute later, from a St.lk block before clutching out that round. Kawano by the 2nd throw was probably stumped that his corner shimmy tech was getting blown up against an opponent with 0 health in the corner and he still couldn't close out the win for the round. Hella demoralizing... 😅

As a philosopher of game theory and being a grappler at heart, when Brian said it’s grappler propaganda that everything isn’t 50/50 and it’s more he’s wrong on one thing. It’s not grappler propaganda. It’s just facts what you said and a REAL person who understands how classical/ operant conditioning works, will tell you that everything is a mind game. Every decision isn’t 50/50, 1/3, 1 out of 4; tbh they have so many layers to how you can condition that a single abare situation can be made to condition 6 different interactions and it’s mixing option counterpart can make more options to condition the same main mindgame. What I’m saying sounds abstract but a real conditioner get what I’m sayin. Brian, I’m happy you made this video, and know, your a student of conditioning too and you understand what your studying. TLDR grappler propaganda isn’t real, everything isn’t 50/50 because mind games have hella layers and this is from a grappler player.

If I remember correctly, Daigo had not done any UME flashkicks in the tournament up to this moment. Played safe and reasonable. This is like he made a statement to KAWANO that he would do crazy moves like this and can you still stay cool. I think KAWANO's probability function got seriously messed up. After this, Daigo did a lot of UME flashkicks and the success rate was very high if not 100%.

Walking forward and grabbing on wake up is a common strategy in Fantasy strike characters since grabs are 3 frames. Jaina is a prime example of a character that can take advantage of a shimmy since she always has a reversal, fast walking speed, and a fast jump attack that leads to 50/50 on block

I know it's harder to do, so that might already be the answer, especially given the high-pressure situation, but I pose the question nonetheless: isn't it strictly better to walk forward backthrow? backthrow gives you oki, 20 more stun, takes longer overall, and most obviously gets you better screen position for the price of 10 damage and the risk of missing the throw by accidentally microwalking back? maybe he tried, but kept his timings conservative to ensure to not get a microwalk back. If it is deliberate, and I'm guessing it is, this optimization seems obvious, so I'd like to know if that's true or whether I'm missing something? do you think wasting brain-cycles over such optimizations yields too little results and the broader idea matters more? The difference in return on this one seems really high to me. I can think of only one situation where you'd choose forward- over backthrow in this particular position: when the 10 additional damage kills.
@benjihuynh2970

This looks more like a mistake to me. I imagine he probably tried to press back on the same frame he went for throw but did it one frame late.
@davidlakes5087

The opponent is walking back to make space. You're walking forward to pursue. Walking backwards instead of forwards even for just that one extra frame to initiate the back throw might put them out of range of your throw.
@ddublu

@@davidlakes5087 do you even read?
@benjihuynh2970
2 жыл бұрын
@@davidlakes5087 you don't have to hold back first to get back throw though. If you press back, lp, and lk on the same frame after walking forward you'll throw without moving backwards at all. Plus I don't think frame 1 of pressing back actually updates your position, maybe that's changed from sf4 to sfv but I definitely remember testing single frames of walk forward and back in that game and character x position didn't change, so if that's remained then you can press back for 1 frame, throw the next with throw will override any back movement so you stay in place.
@ddublu
2 жыл бұрын
so, for anyone wondering as well: in an fgc-translated vid, he states that he "used forward throw". The burden of translation notwithstanding, he didn't try to get backthrow, while stating that if would have been better. This leads me to believe my assumptions are correct, I'm still interested in brian's answer to the finer points, so I'll keep asking.

There's really nothing to this interaction. There's plenty more high level key daigo moments in history then just walking forward and doing a throw. I know it's not that simple, there's a lot of thought put into that decision but he still could have made the wrong guess at that moment. The most you can say about this moment is daigo knew the kolin player knew to walk backwards and block because they thought daigo was going to wake up flash kick. It's that simple and not really worth going into. Daigo knew he was facing a high level player that was going to try to shimmy him or defend against his high pressure situation moment because he had meter to do ex-flash kick. There's an analysis of player, character, the corner situation, how much meter they have, how much stun they have, and daigo knew that the kolin player was going to respect all the meter that he had and was going to respect that he's daigo and he's playing guile. I don't know, not trying to be rude, but this is very simplistic risk reward fundamental analysis.

Respectfully, I feel like this analysis misses something. To Brian, Daigo is just inventing a really cool rock or some extra sharp scissors. But he's still playing RPS. I don't think he is necessarily, I think it was a hard read. And that's what makes it's beautiful. That's something Daigo is good at, yomi. As a guessing game variant, walking forward is a pretty terrible move that beats almost nothing. But as a hard read it's like saying" I'm so positive you're about to predictably walk backwards but I'm willing to die to call it out." The throw is a nice option for the reasons Brian mentioned but it's extra strong because of the mental damage.

This was definitely an incredibly turnabout for Daigo. But given the reaction to this move, it's clearly not a staple of the typical wake-up mindgames. So then, given it's effectiveness here, why don't we see it more often, at least in high-level play? Throughout the video, we go through all of the layers of the wake-up mindgames, all of the risks and rewards. Finally, we conclude that given how every option of Daigo's had incredible risk, walk-up throw would give him the most reward. How come other players haven't come to this same conclusion before? This feels like a P=NP question, but there's a bevy of other factors too. Does Daigo just have stronger nerves? Was this developed as an anti-Kawano measure after analyzing his matches? Is this just a miracle of the human brain? Or perhaps, do we just tend to think from the techniques down, as opposed to from the mechanics up?

It's more reward than wake up cr. Mk, not more reward than landing wake up jab xx ex boom or wake up ex flash kick. Wake up cr. Mk and walk up throw cover similar options, but walk up throw is riskier. Walk up throw also beats one more option which is walk back block low. So basically it's not ALWAYS better, it just beats/loses to different things
