Eric, EVERY and I do mean EVERY great architect spends their lifetime seeking out inspiration! Travel, books, art museums, workshops, personal study, outside interests - a lifetime of learning … that’s brilliance - not lack of creative ability. To even suggest burying one’s head in the sand is un-thinkable! I always look forward to your recommendations!

Hey! i have a general question! I'm applying for undergrad architecture - they want a portfolio with 10-12 pieces. i wanted to know, since they don't specify what kind of work they are looking for, it is alright to include one or two portraits of celebrities that i've done just as a showcase of my abilities? Asking this because I know that someone else has rights to the photos, personalities, etc. Thanks!

This video makes me want to get all of those books right now. However, I just embarked on a decluttering journey in my tiny apartment and I’m having a hard time deciding what is worth keeping. In your studio update video you talk a lot about organization, and in other videos you discuss your many essential tools for the profession. On the topic of books, found objects, or curating a physical “library” I’d love to know how you tackle the complex subject of acquiring and collecting these things while keeping them organized and prioritizing what is necessary over time. Do you periodically purge? Do you find equal value in e-books that take up no physical space? Maybe a future video or blog post would be awesome. As always, amazing video and thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for another valuable resource Eric. Love the cabinet of curiosities “Now” section of the website. Just read your newsletter and it made me think of Austin Kleon’s Steal Like An Artist. As Austin reminds us “Every new idea is just a mashup or a remix of one or more previous ideas.” To continue the spirit of sharing great books I’d recommend all of Austin Kleon’s to anyone reading this comment! One more quote that your newsletter readers might appreciate: “Talent is insignificant. I know a lot of talented ruins. Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck, but, most of all, endurance.”― James Baldwin

Eric, I just want to thank you for all the effort and positive mindset you put in apparently everything you do. I am amazed, impressed, encouraged, and motivated. It’s beautiful to see an architect work and live the way you do. Bravo! By being true to yourself, and wanting to share, you contribute to lifting the condition of so many frustrated architects. Architecture will always be one of the most contradictory and frustrating practices, where one is constantly confronted with having to break through walls and climb mountains in order to get to the other side. Well, any way your website is on my bookmarks bar, and believe me I have hundreds of bookmarks. I hope I can share some books with you, I have a few highly inspiring ones. Books can be an extremely profound source of inspiration, they can simply change your life! Ebrahem

Hi Eric, I've just read your latest mailing. Quite frankly I am staggered by both the ignorance and arrogance of some one implying that you have "zero talent' simply because you use books for ideas. The implication is that a talented person needs no other reference than their own brain. What a load of buffalo droppings. Does this person not understand that our minds are stimulated from seeing the work of others. Little ideas can be sparked by referring to books and other sources: libraries, art galleries, museums, the internet. The list is endless. Oh and don't forget about just going for a walk. I am not an architect although it was a dream of mine when younger. I ended up studying Mechanical Engineering and later Graphic Design. I am surrounded by books at home, thousands, covering all the things that interest and excite me about life. Art, design, architecture, engineering, computing, gardening, cooking and all manner of handicrafts. Life would be a miserable and less beautiful place without them. You can look through books many times over and find interesting, useful and stimulating things at different times depending upon your mood or the projects that you may be working on at the time. All I can say to you Eric is keep on reading, and to the person who made that statement go and buy a book. I shall now watch the latest of your many excellent, stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable videos. May you live long and architect. Kindest regards, Jeremy.
