Messi was born in Rosario, Province of Santa Fe, to partner Jorge Horácio Messi, an iron factory worker and Celia María Cuccittini, a part-time cleaner. From his father's lineage, he came from Ancona, a city in Italy, where his ancestor, Angelo Messi, moved to Argentina in 1883. He had two older brothers, Rodrigo and Matías, and a sister, María Sol. At the age of five, Messi began playing football for Grandoli, a local football club trained by his father, Jorge. In 1995, Messi joined Newell's Old Boys based in his hometown, Rosario. He was part of a local force which only lost once in four years, and was known as "Machine 87", from the year of their birth
At the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with a lack of growth hormone. The River Plate elite team was interested in its development, but they did not have enough money for treatment, which reached $ 900 per month. Carles Rexach, sporting director of FC Barcelona, had found Messi's talents because he had relatives in Lleida, and his father arranged a trial with the team. Rexach, without carrying paper in his hand at the time, made a contract offer to Messi on a paper napkin. [24] [25] Barcelona offered to finance Messi's treatment if he wanted to move to Spain. Messi and his father then moved to Barcelona, and he entered the club's youth academy.
