Congrats on the X4! I have an X2 and have been debating whether to upgrade it (I used it for motorcycling, but never for MTB). I did get an Ace Pro a while ago and OMG the quality is amazing, but I don’t love running a chest rig in the heat, so I lately run a Go 3 under the peak of my helmet, which works OK for the most part (but pretty much forces me to do vertical video). You’ve done a really good overview of the flow/jump area at VP and I bet it will help a lot of people better understand how it is laid out. I’ve been hitting it a lot as I’ve been building jump skills this year and it’s forced me to build my internal “map”. It’s such a sessionable area, esp on an eMTB so you don’t get so worn out. How do you feel about those two pumpers going into the first left-handed berm of Sloppy Flow? Personally, I dislike them. They are a bit too tight for mountain bikes, IMO, and just screw up my rhythm for the berm. That’s just my opinion, though. Might be an opportunity for me to learn. That said, I also don’t care for the pumpers/“double” coming out of the big left-hander berm after the 4 great jumps on 100 Proof. I was there when they put it in on a trail day, but kept my mouth shut. The berm itself, and the lippier jump leading into it, is awesome now, though. I love the final 2 large jumps, but I think we need to address that off-camber segment of trail between them. It’s awkward, IMO. One caution on the Insta editor - you have to be really subtle with the “Motion ND” feature or it will cause weird effects around the more stable objects in the FoV (like bars, front tire, etc). I’m still trying to figure out how to get the best effect from it.

@@mike.thomas so far I’ve been really really impressed with it. I’ve used it here, onewheeling and on purpose trip to Colorado we just got back from and the difference in image quality is huge! Even when shooting in 5.7 k, I can tell a difference between the X4 and my X3 footage. Then in 8k the final result is much closer to a 4k image once you export it. It’s definitely worth the upgrade if you can swing it. I haven’t started editing it yet but I’ve got a side by side video coming out eventually comparing it to the x3. Same, I love the chesty shot but in the dead of summer it’s a bit toasty. The go3 does really well on the chesty though where it’s so lightweight (out of the action pod) it doesn’t bounce around at all. Nice! I haven’t tried it under the helmet visor, even with freeframe mode can you get good horizontal footage or is it to high up and wind up cropping some out? Thanks! This is how I’ve been riding it the last 2 years. I love that it makes it super easy to session each section and hot lab out some jumps. It makes me so happy we finally have some good areas to work on jumps and get some air time. I’d always go to bike parks and struggle because there was just now where around here to really progress on them and now VP and CVP as well having jumps is HUGE. I get so pumped 😂I agree I’m not a huge fan of the pumpers either, I feel like you could carry/maintain your soeed way better without them. They just feel awkward and I’ve tried them on multiple wheel sizes 😂. Something about them is definitely off. I definitely agree about that off camber section, you’d be able to come in so much better if there was a better way to straighten it out. It always feels awakened going into that first one. Ya I’m still “learning” exactly how much motion blur I want to add in. For snowboarding I had it pretty dialed in in all of my winter videos but in the bike I’ve got to play with it more for sure

@@BoardsBikesAndHikes Good to know re video quality on the X4. My riding buddy is still trying to figure out the best setup for his, as well. I have been editing some 2-camera video from a ride we did with a couple other guys, and his angle looks so much better and more exciting than my Go 3 angle in the peak. Eventually I’ll get the footage edited down enough so that it is not a feature-length film 😆. Glad I’m not alone in my dislike for the pump rollers. IIRC some goofball actually put a lippy gap in the first instance, and someone came along later and rightly knocked it down a bunch, but left the remainders in for some reason. The second set entering the immediate right-hander are appropriately spaced and sized, though. Yeah, with the Go 3 I’m using the little clippy thing and mounting it so it hangs under the peak. That position is nice and stable but you’re right - the FoV is not that great from that position, and the footage looks ultra slow (possibly because I’m ultra slow ;-)) unless you shoot free-frame and turn it vertical to include a bit more bike and ground. Then it’s acceptable (barely). I first tried using it with the magnetic necklace but that was a stabilization disaster, so I tried to running it in the action pod on the chest harness. But now you’ve given me an idea of trying just the camera itself in that position. Would be a lot lighter and not get jostled so much. Trade-off is lower resolution, but I generally only upload 1440 anyway. The other trade-off is lower battery life, but I have a 2nd Go 3 camera to help with that. We’ll have to ride sometime. I’m in the Central KY MTB Facebook group. Later…

Haha that’s always the hard part is trimming it all down😂 Ya definitely give it a shot! I was using just the quick release mount and the camera itself last season and rode some bike park laps in gatlinburg and had some really good results with it. Where it weighs virtually nothing it doesn’t shake the mount or camera at all. I would run it on the way down and then let it charge on the way back up. Once I did that, that was how I ran it the rest of the season. Wear it during the fun sections and charge it during the slower bits 😂. I love the under the leak show with my x3 but never tried it with the go3, it does make things look slower I think. The higher up the camera is, it always seems to make it look slower. Ya definitely! I’ve been itching to ride so bad if this 40 days and nights of rain would ever stop!
