Good video. I have an old Garmin I occasionally use in the car but it's not designed to be in the weather. May need to invest in something like the Zumo. Not sure it the larger display is worth the extra $. As someone who has worked for 35 maintaining semiconductor manufacturing equipment, I have to say that in order to get the best crimp onto a pin the proper crimping tool is required. Having the proper crimping tool also makes the job quicker and easier. One other observation is that typically the powered side of the connector usually has the female pins. This is so that nothing can accidentally touch the exposed male pins and short them out. Granted on the low voltage 12VDC of a motorcycle it's probably not a big deal, but on something like household 120VAC you would not want the exposed powered pins sticking out where someone or something could easily touch them.

I still have an automotive style GPS on my other bike, and I ran one on the RT for many years too. You can keep a clear sandwich baggie on the bike in the event of rain. That said, the Zumo is a much better device, and it has motorcycle-specific features as well as weather protection. The crimping tool is nice to have, but with an experienced hand I have no trouble crimping with pliers. The key is to sneak up on the crimp, rather than clamp down like a gorilla on the first squeeze. The weatherpack style connectors are protected on both sides by the plastic casing, but I wouldn't leave either side just hanging loose. I like to have the side that I might be removing be the one with the locking tab, so that you can pull the tab up and pull the connector with one hand.

I love mine. Have it on my Tiger. Was thinking about getting a second harness to put on my R1200RT. Looks pretty similar to how I did it on the tiger. Thanks again for posting your videos.

That's what I have too--a second mount so I can just move the unit itself between my RT and my Bonneville. It's worked well.

Thanks for this video; it's a great help. I would like to see the video on how you manufactured the mount for the Garmin to be on top of your instruments. i.e. speedo and tack. It's much easier to see when riding.

It's not difficult to do at all, and not expensive either. Here's that video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qmt-0WGCh6ippKw

nice vid! I just mounted mine up to an 05 FJR stearing ball mount. i decided to run the power to a lead off the battery but will need to make sure I take the unit off when I'm way...which shouldnt be an issue.

Nothing wrong with going direct to the battery, as long as you don't leave the unit on and drain the battery. If you want to get a little more sophisticated you could source an inexpensive automotive 12 volt relay and base. The relay is tied to a switched circuit on the bike but it draws very little power. When it senses the switched circuit come on, it allows battery power to go through to your GPS or any other device. When the switched power is turned off the relay shuts down the battery power too.

Thanks for sharing all these great videos! I own a 2009 RT and ´need to install a Zumo 396. Do you know how can I find this connection on my RT? I´ve tried to look for such a connector after watching your video but I couldn´t find any. Is it different on 2009 RT? Thanks!

@@tinderboxarts Thank you very much! Finally found the connector, it was wraped in cloth tape because the former owner never used it. Already purchased and installed the Wunderlich satnav mount and next step is do the wiring. Thanks a lot!

Nice video, thanks. I have a 2013 R1200RT, and just bought a Garmin XT2. If I wire mine up as you did, will I be able to have the turn instruction audio through my motorcycle speakers with the volume controlled by the wonderwheel?
@tinderboxarts

There is no integration with the bike controls using that wiring, it is just power. If you have a Cardo or other communicator, and you pair with your phone, you can have the Zumo broadcast directions, music and even make phone calls through your headset. That's what I do. It will even beep to warn you when speed limits change. I don't have the BMW speakers or any of that system, but if that system pairs with your phone you might be able to make something work, I'm not sure.

@@tinderboxarts Thanks for the reply. I’m not sure how my current setup is wired-I’m not much of a mechanical or electrical guy-unfortunately. I have the standard BMW cradle with a NAV IV, and I can get my audio commands through my speakers, and the wonderwheel controls the volume. I quite like that setup, and hope I can do the same with my Zūmo XT2. Perhaps I’ll fire off an inquiry to Garmin, after all, they did make the BMW NAV GPS units.

To be clear, there is no communication through the factory cradle or factory wiring with the Zumo. All you can do is get power for the unit there. I was only suggesting that if the BMW system pairs with your phone, it might be possible to use your phone as a bluetooth connection between the Zumo and the bike. Probably not, though. If you have a Cardo or similar comm system in your helmet that would be the easiest route to get your directions.

Hi, I currently have the Nav V on my 2012RT. I have the Zumo on another motorcycle. Is there a way to remove my Nav V and install the hardware for the Zumo, and just interchange the Zumo between bikes? Thanks

I've seen from some other riders that somebody is making an adapter which allows you to mount a Zumo in the factory cradle. I've not tried it and I don't even know the name of it, but I know it exists! Alternately, you could just pull the whole cradle off and do something like I did in the video.
