Just to let everybody know, you dont need to take cam cover off to change the pick up. Did it twice, never pulled the cam cover. You just hook a piece of wire onto old pick up wires, pull them through the hole and than hook the new pick up wires ontu the piece of wire and pull them back. And trans fluid have nothing to do with engine oil in the cam area...

Have you had the carb off? I was experiencing the same problem with the engine running rough and backfiring and I tracked it down to the VOES (vacuum operated electronic switch) behind the carburetor. The positive wire coming out of the switch had began rubbing on the back of the carburetor and was creating a short. I pretty much went through the things you tried (battery, timing sensor, rebuilt the carb, replaced the vacuum hose from the VOES to the back of the carb) when I finally noticed the bare wire and replaced the VOES. Just thought I'd mention it as a suggestion to check. By the way, your videos about working on your bike are probably the most informative I have watched since buying my bike, good job! Mine is a 1993 sportster 1200.

mooniniteguy Thanks for your comment I have had the carbi off and did a first basic clean out I am now doing a second more thorough clean and blow out the passages with compressed air at work Im not sure yet but i think i diagnosed a faulty ignition switch ( i got some bad readings on the accessories when the ignition was turned on , and on one of the vids you see a burned out wire coming from the ignition switch ) I will check the wires last before taking the bike to a shop ( i havnt noticed anything yet ) The stator checks out good with the ohms , but i will do a visual check soon Thanks again

Try threading the pickup wire through the hole , you may have more luck than me ( it would save a lot of time ) I hope this video helps

Good luck getting the cam cover back on if you pull it with all the push rods and rocker arms in place, if you get it to pop back on you got luckey!! Just cut wired and pull thru hole in cover and lube up new cable cover and wires and pull thru, put connector back on new wires, assemble and done. Dont forget to set timing with timing light! Sorry but thos guy went thru a bunch of extra steps and work for no reason!

I didn't want the wires wearing through and shorting on the motor, I wanted the cable sleeving intact at the hole area, I could have used some silicone as a type of plastic grommet and saved myself some work

if I may suggest a few upgrades? dyna single fire ignition and a s & s super e carb setup. I have been running that same combination on my big twin Evo which always starts on 2nd kick and my son's sporty we built. I haven't touched either the carb or ign since I installed them almost 20yrs ago.just perfect! my boys sporty is running great 4yrs now and imo the factory carb and ign is just junk.yea it costs but the best upgrades u can make

If the plug gotta come off end of sensor harness, cant you fish it without pullin cam cover. If I gotta buy a gasket anyways I am going to trim the fat from the cam cover using a cutoff wheel.

Man this is the only way I could find to install the wires without cutting or trimming any of the wires, A long term motorbike mechanic / auto electrician might have some trick to do it, however even there he would probably trim some of the insulation protection from around the wires, I had to take the whole cover off to do it properly, I couldn't find any other way ( I am not a mechanic or auto electrician )

The problem was the carburetor, or maybe the fuel tap ?

People do the work your own way maybe you can just cut the wire and thread the new pickup wire through ( i found that i couldn't thread the new pickup wire through without making a bigger hole ( and i didn't want to make a bigger hole ) it would allow dirt and rain into the cdi pickup area )) the black wire go's through the cam cover on an angle ( with the insulation around the wires

Afternoon - please could I hack a few seconds of your video - about 2:00 to 2:10? I just need to show the cover plate being removed, and the little 'cup' underneath. (On the Sportster, this changed in 1979 and in 1980.) It'd be helpful in my next video. Cheers, Chris

I have this type of system on my 1987 XLH 1100, but haven't been able to find anyone who knows how and what to set the timing at. All I can find online is the ones saying to use the inspection plug between the heads, but my motorcycle does not have that, so I'm assuming the timing is done right here? Just a Note, I was having the popping problem also with the original Keihin Carburetor and all it needed was rebuilt and now I just need to check the timing, which the dealer tells me they no longer service anything older than a 2001.
@1966human

Yes I'm pretty sure it was a carburettor problem, I wouldn't assume the timing is done right here, as when the bike was sold it wasn't running perfect, although it was improved ( I understand fuel injected cars however I admit bikes aren't my fort'e, I would recommend a fuel injected sportster as the sportster is a good bike to ride, I would recommend " How to wrench" and "Tatro machine" channels on youtube ( search channel names and find the channel section in the search engine to fine channel ( not subject ))

Update, turns out it was the Carburetor, first tried an S&S Carburetor kit they swore would fit, but it would not, the manifold was too large. Ended up rebuilding the old original Carburetor by way of a $14.00 rebuild kit and it's working great now, except have to replace the stator in the primary because it will not charge.

I would install a small battery gauge and have a look at the voltage readings , should be 12 volts not started and 14 + volts started, have a look on ee bay there is a good one try " car auto motorcycle universal waterproof LED battery voltage meter " also try to get the computer code numbers from the Computer control module that could tell you what the problem is It could also be the carburetor Good luck and all the best with the bike

I took the bike to a Harley mechanic and he worked on the Carburetor , The bike would only start if level ( standing up )( after the work )) it ran rough when warming up although when at operating temperature it went well, It wasn't fixed 100% I suspect some type of wiring or ignition / electrical problem as well, may be a new carburetor would have done the trick
