How to install Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (a GNU/Linux distro) on Google's Chromebook Pixel 2013 (a great netbook): beginner's level, wipe it all, install with full disk encryption, and test all drivers. (This is not crouton.)
I hope it helps whomever wants to make the jump but was afraid to.
WHY?
The Chromebook Pixel is a developer laptop. Installing Ubuntu on it (or any other Linux distribution) is for developers and for power users to benefit from the full potential of their laptop. For regular users, definitely keep ChromeOS, it's an amazing product (fast, easy, secure, low power).
HAVE YOU TRIED X INSTEAD?
The Chromebook Pixel is a real laptop, and there are as many possibilities as with any other laptop of the same architecture.
Alternatively, you could use crouton to install another environment running at the same time as ChromeOS (switch between with combination of keys), but in that case there would be no full disk encryption (although you could encrypt your home folder), you would loose about 4 Gb of disk space compared to wiping it all and having just one environment, and each time you need your second environment you would have to enter ChromeOS then shell then chroot which is not ideal for daily use. All solutions are valid, it depends on your needs.
(I dedicate this video to my friend Russ whom installed Ubuntu for the first time for me, and opened up a new world for me. In the process of making this video, I learned video editing and kdenlive. Note: This is my first video editing experience. I used kdenlive on that same Chromebook. I'm sorry I accidentally left some inconsistent editing cuts and annoying sound clicks in the video.)
