Great video, guys. I'm a former ASE tech who's been out of the industry for over 10 years. I'm in the process of installing a reman engine in my 88 Mustang resto-mod project and have to transfer the distributor between engines. I somehow totally forgot over all these years how to do it. Your refresher course was just what I needed. Amazing work!

Makes sense to install a 'NEW' Distributor at 8-12 degrees ADVANCED vs at ZERO, as the Engine doesn't really like to fire right-up when it's installed at ZERO-TDC.

Hey! So, I have a '74 K20. I got it running, but it didn't have much power when I stepped on the gas. I thought I needed to adjust the timing and tweak the carburetor. I started with the HEI distributor, set it to top dead center, dropped the distributor in, and put the spark plug wires in the right order. But it's still not running right, even though I know there's spark and it's getting gas. It cranks but won't fire, and now the carb is spitting gas out the top.

I think the point here is trying to set it at the initial point of timing--where you want it to fire exactly, depending on your performance needs. I don't think MSD would put out this video if it had wrong technical information. It would make it hard to sell their products.

He said turn the engine til it goes to 0 on the balancer, but right after that he says make sure you land on 10-12? So which is it?
@musician445
6 жыл бұрын
So i see your confusion. I believe he technically skipped a step which is what makes it seem convoluted. So normally if you didn't know where the engine would be happy, you would set it on 0. Then later on what you would do is adjust the distributors position to 10 degrees advanced by loosening its bolt and turning it the whole assembly (i believe clockwise?). The purpose of the advance is tuning the engine to where its most happy and runs the smoothest. But different timing curves can be used, (advanced or retarded) for performance applications, due to the dynamic rpm of wide open throttle. But generally the 10 degrees advanced thing is a happy place for a middle of the road tune on a small block chevy, i'm not sure for other engine types it may be the same. If anyone else reading this has extra info or needs to correct me feel free. Hope this helps! Maybe you already know this by now though lol.
@musician445
6 жыл бұрын
Oh and also, basically he did the same thing as turning the distributor by setting the timing mark at 10 degrees. Either way works. The reason he did that is because he basically prer-set the advance, without having to have the engine running. Normally you would have to have the engine running, and watch the timing mark on the harmonic balancer and then adjust your distributor timing accordingly. He just did it the quicker way. But basically he can still go back and fine tune it, by doing it the way i described above. Again hope this helps!

My guess is that their engine has an aftermarket cam so it has different ignition timing. Thus, they need the thing to not be exactly at 0 tdc as 0 tdc is for the stock cam.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask a question, but I need help with something BAD. I am trying to set a distributor in place on a 69 Caddy 472 engine. I have watched a number of videos on how to find TDC and think this one has been very informative. I had a friend bump the engine over for me while I felt for the compression to blow my thumb off. I am also using the factory service manual that is telling me to get the timing marl lined up with zero. Here is where I am in need of the help. I notice that the marker for the governor on the 472 is labeled backward. Instead of reading from top to bottom so to speak 0, 5, 10. It reads 10, 5, 0. Currently I have it about an 8th of an inch past what is labeled as 0. (closest that I can get) From watching this video I am assuming that where I am really at is about 11 degrees past TDC. So am I right in thinking that I am in the right place? Did Cadillac label it this way to correspond with the service manual so that 0 would really be about 10 degrees past? I'm afraid to try to start it and mess anything up. I've never had to do this before. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks.
