Did you run a ground back to your house batteries? Where did you ground the alternator? I have gotten mix answers from Nations.
@OutofIpswich

We have 3 house batteries connected in parallel. There is only one chassis ground connected to one of the house batteries through a shunt. The alternator is grounded through its mount, so there's only one large charge wire connected to the alternator, plus three small signal wires.

Did you have to take the front end of the van apart to install the alternator? I have a 2015 Sprinter.... I want to install my kit before it gets cold. I am integrating the WS500 with a full Victron setup. I'm a bit overwhelmed....

Good video. I had a question about battery placement/distance. I had read in multiple places that the connections (wires or bars) between batteries should be the same length. With one battery under the passenger seat and the other two in the back of the van. Is that not an issue?
@OutofIpswich

If you have sufficiently sized wires connecting the batteries, they should be electrically equivalent. Technically, there is a non-zero resistance between our front and rear batteries, but it's negligible. We have had no issues.

I like to follow existing cable pathways whenever possible because they're in areas deemed safe by the manufacturer. Also, it keeps the cable safe from road debris. Those were the main factors.

Hey David! Glad you liked the video. We have installed a diesel heater (Espar D5e), although it's not finished yet. We still have to install the heat exchangers for hot air and hot water. Thank you for your generous response. If you don’t mind, I have a couple of questions. Are your batteries and electrical system in the rear of the vehicle on the driver side? If so, how many linear feet of 4/0 wire did you use? I’m composing a shopping list and trying to avoid wasting any precious copper wire in the process. Thank you in advance!
@OutofIpswich
3 жыл бұрын
@@davidblood9882The rear batteries are on the passengers side. I think in total we used about 15 feet of black for grounding and 30 feet of red. The red is longer because of the additional length from the alternator to the passengers seat. Hopefully that makes sense!
@OutofIpswich
3 жыл бұрын
@@davidblood9882 I wanted to add, those lengths include jumping the batteries together as well, because they are wired in parallel. And it also includes the connections to the shunt on the ground cable. It was recommended by Nations to use 4/0 cable on the ground wire as well as the charge wire.

Do you need to upgrade the sprinter alternator to charge 2 x renogy 100ah battery's ?
@OutofIpswich
3 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on how quickly you want to charge them! I don't know what the surplus capacity of the OEM alternator is, and it would depend on engine speed and load, as well as consumption (i.e.- how much electricity you're using, like lights, HVAC, etc.) What I do know is a 280A second alternator should charge 200Ah from flat in less than one hour. I suspect the stock alternator would take much longer than that, but I don't have data to confirm it.
@jamesmaccubbin7434

Awesome video - very helpful as usual. It looks like you have a Renogy AUX chassis battery and a set of two Renogy House batteries - is that right?. I'm trying for a very similar setup (I have the alternator and the WS500 but haven't installed them yet) Is your Wakespeed charging the AUX battery under the passenger's seat or the House bank?
@OutofIpswich
3 жыл бұрын
They're all 170Ah batteries from Renogy, you got that right. What I didn't explain, but should have, is that I ditched the OEM auxiliary charge wire. So all 3 are house batteries, and completely isolated from the vehicle system. The original alternator charges the starting battery, the auxiliary alternator charges the house batteries.
@jamesmaccubbin7434

@@OutofIpswich Ah - Got it. I’m thinking about moving the AUX battery to under the hood with the RB Components brackets for the 2019+ vans and two 6v batteries just for my lighting. @@jamesmaccubbin7434 well there's a grommet in the firewall that's pretty simple to add to, and a wire trough under the carpet to the passengers seat. So either way you decide to do it, the wire path is pretty simple.

whats the purpose of the shunt on the ground cables ? good video !
@OutofIpswich
2 жыл бұрын
Great question! The shunt is necessary for the voltage regulator to know the battery's voltage, so it can charge then accordingly. As the battery is at different states of charge, it wants to receive different charge input. And the proper charge profile varies by battery chemistry. Hope that helps!

How much time it takes to charge your batteries?
@OutofIpswich
2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how depleted they are and whether we're using the alternator or shore power to charge the batteries. If we're using the alternator, it depends on the driving conditions (i.e. - engine rpm, etc.). So, it varies a lot. But in general, they stay full with normal usage. We typically drive about an hour or more per day.

@@OutofIpswich is it ok to replace an existing sprinter alternator with high output one lets say 400amp because I'm installing 900ah battery
@AZRockRunner

The BMS in the battery limits how much current it charge the battery. My guess is 100 to 150A. That's good, otherwise the wire can get very hot. For larger battery which situated in the back, i think 24 V alternator may be mandatod.
