Man! What a trip down memory lane! I was the Apple qualification tech for Maxtor when the G4 cubes were being built. I was responsible for testing every capacity, and each version of firmware version, for all of the drives we sold to Apple. My lab had hundreds of macs of every possible flavor... with racks and racks of cubes running hardware/firmware tests. As you were starting to take the drive out I was thinking: "wait 'till he gets to that power cord... that thing was always a bitch!" Yep! Still not as bad as swapping out a drive in an eMac.

Not just TRIM helps but NCQ (from SATA 2 onward) should too. NCQ is also used in newer solid-state drives where the drive encounters latency on the host, rather than the other way around. NCQ also enables the SSD controller to complete commands concurrently (or partly concurrently, for example using pipelines) where the internal organisation of the device enables such processing.

Wouldn't that just be retrieving save files or boot up? From what I remember, the PS2 just read straight from the disc, not to mention the fact that the save files are stored on external memory cards in, from what I remember, 4 or 8 MB, not 120 GB.
@FalenDragmire
6 жыл бұрын
SSD would be limited by whatever interface it's using to connect to whatever PC or game console you're putting it in. An original Xbox or PS2 use IDE connections, so at the very best, you'd get max IDE speeds, which I think top out around 150 mbps on a good day, so just barely faster than high speed SDXC cards.
@BrunodeSouzaLino
5 жыл бұрын
@@FalenDragmire SATA adapters for the PS2 Fat do exist ( they don't have the Ethernet connector, however). However, you'd be stuck with FAT32 limitations (files can't be larger than 4 GB, you can only have a maximum of 1 TB partition).
@FalenDragmire
5 жыл бұрын
@@BrunodeSouzaLino Yes, I know. I was referring to read/write speeds, not the capacity of the drive or the max file size. Even if you had a 1TB SSD, which would be an absolute waste in a PS2, you'd still only see read/write speeds comparable to an IDE hard drive simply because of the interface used to connect to the PS2. Also, the max hard drive size for FAT32 drives is 2TB, not 1TB (which isn't even the filesystem used by the PS2, it just has similar limitations).
