Glad I seen this. The gap behind the tensionor was making my belt jump all over. I put washers behind the tensioner as well and it helped it out but it's still jumping off by 2/16th of an inch and maintaining that but I dnt want to risk it. Ima cut the excess off as well now to see if it improves the belt jumping.

Hey Bro, how you doing, got another question, when installing the mechanical tensioner did you line the cam gear and crank up before you installed the timing belt and then tighten the tensioner or did you leave the cam and crank gear off a half of tooth? This is were am at on my build 😊

You need to time the engine meaning can gears and crank great gotta be aligned before you tighten it. Otherwise the engine won't be timed correctly

@@CarModsGarage ok , so in this video the cam gear and crank didn’t move as you tighten the bolt? I know on hydraulic you have to leave the crank and cam gear off a half tooth when push up on hydraulic tensioner. I was wondering if you have to to do the same thing on mechanical tensioner.
@CarModsGarage

@roycepickett1598 no they didn't move. The teeth keep it all in place. I tightened a bit and turned the crank a couple times then checked the marks again to be sure it was still timed correctly. If everything is still aligned you tighten the tensioner or pull the tensioner pin on the hydraulic. If in the end you get all the marks aligned then you are good to go

Hey what’s up Marco , when you install the mechanical tensioner, did you put the crankshaft at a half of tooth or just line everything up and tighten the tensioner?

I came across a problem with the mechanical tensioner and the timing belt. I have a Gate timing belt , when I install everything the belt is tight going around the tensioner and I do get the belt on it’s seems to not stay centered. Is there something I’m missing? I even have adjustable cam gears.
@CarModsGarage

@roycepickett1598 if I remember correctly there was a plastic on the back that would make it not center. I didn't cut or shave anything but check to see if the tensioner sits on the block and not on any plastic

When using the aftermarket belt tensioner did you have to rotate the intake Cam over a little bit and then tension the belt. Because I’m doing the same job and when I move the tensioner with my cam gears lined up, it pulls the intake cam gear off time from the exhaust cam gear

@@mattholland1908 I did not need to rotate and timing was correct but be sure that you trim the plastic under the tensioner to be sure it will keep the belt straight. My belt broke and part of the issue was the back plastic not being trimmed.

@@mattholland1908 if it got your timing off then you will need to return the engine. Tightening the tensioner should not change the timing. Didn't change mine

Ok thank you … doing the bill did you use cam locks to keep them in place while you did the belt change?

How do you put the timing belt over the tensioner??? Because my belt looks ti be to short
@CarModsGarage
Жыл бұрын
The tensioner needs to be retracted. If it is the OEM tensioner it needs to have the pin in it otherwise you won't have enough space to put the belt in there. For the mechanical tensioner it needs to be manually retracted. Both cases either the pin or tensioning by hand should only be done after the belt is in place.

Did your rear timing cover have a hole where the center mechanical tensioner goes?
@CarModsGarage

No it didn't. I think I needed to make one. I see the belt a tiny bit to the outside but so far it's working well

@@CarModsGarage right on, you may want keep an eye on it for a little while. The belt has been known to work it's way loose when the tensioner isn't fully seated, causing bent valves in the process. I have a picture of my rear cover that I made a hole in to address this. I can send it to you via email if you ever need it. 👍
