Interesting fact about Neptune is that if you put the Neptune CD into a PC running XP, it'll actually let you upgrade because the kernel version on Neptune is higher than that of XP (NT 5.5 on Neptune, 5.1 on XP)

+Steven Schneider I installed a fresh WinXP copy on VMWare and ran the upgrade setup. It went fine and had restarted the VM. Than it gave me the option of booting back into windows or into the neptune setup. I had left it, and it was booting the setup as normal until it was stuck at "Setup is starting Neptune". It was staying on that for about a minute until it bsod' me "Inaccesible boot volume". So, I reset the VM a few times, however to no avail. Then I decided to try the other boot option, which was the "boot to windows xp" option. I tried that, and it gave me an error about needing to start the neptune setup. I could upload a video on it if anyone wants me to.

I liked Windows 2000, it was the first time Windows felt like a Real Operating System, and not some sort of toy sat on top of DOS. Windows 2000 and Visual Studio C++ 6.0 and MS SQL Server was a pretty decent combination.
@JeordieEH

Yeah, I completely abandoned 9x operating systems for windows 2000 and never looked back for my own main desktop operating system. It just felt so much better. I took windows 2000 classes and learned a lot about the NT operating system. I had beta tested the operating system and when it became the final, I used it all the way up until sp4. Finally an operating system that didn't need to reboot every time you changed or tested something with the network or many other settings. People often told me that windows 2000 wasn't something a home user like myself should use and that I should get windows 98 se or ME if I really wanted a desktop to do what I wanted to do and the same story when xp rolled around. However all my games worked, my programs worked, my devices worked and it was stable compared to the 9x systems, which microsoft blamed all the old generic memory that everyone used as the key factor to windows 9x being unstable. Strange how I used brand named kingston memory and switching to windows 2000, my system just become so much more stable. So maybe it wasn't the memory. Sure via chipsets and generic memory were problematic on their own, that is another story. That being said, I did dual boot and tested out xp. It wasn't until SP2 that I had started using windows xp more. I would switch between the two and would often just switch back to windows 2000 every time my system would feel sluggish or be broken and need a fresh reinstall to fix all the bloat. I found windows xp to be a bit unstable at first, then sp1 rolled around and everything including usb support got better. Then windows xp sp2 came around and usb 2.0 native support improved dramatically and things were great again, thus finalizing the end of windows 2000 for me. However I revisit things in vmware from time to time.

It was a nice upgrade to Windows NT 4, which likewise felt and behaved like a real operating system. It's a crying shame Microsoft didn't just push that way for small businesses and consumers early on and forego Win9x, but I suppose people were fussy about having their shitty DOS software work on the then-new Windows system, and of course a lot of people had older hardware that would not have run NT quite as well as it did Win 95.

You should setup a computer that you can run some diagnostics on your old hard drives. Maybe read the smart logs, you probably ought to overwrite all the blocks. Try MHDD for a scan, perhaps you might find that laptop drive has slow sectors, try some linux distro to wipe the drives. When you overwrite a sector that is failing the internals of the hard drive remap it to a spare sector and add an entry to the GLIST.

I had a version of Windows 2000 Beta back in the day (before the final was released), it was missing features like windows media player. The one cool thing about that version is it let you hot swap IDE drives, something I found out by accident. It pops up with an error saying you shoulden't remove IDE drives while running but it worked anyway, later versions of windows got rid of that including Windows 2000 final, sad.
