Emphasis on drilling holes to a size that accommodates larger new backcheck shanks to avoid splitting backcheck support blocks during installation. Prepare bit with tape depth stop to make sure enlarged hole is deep enough but does not go through bottom of key. Countersink holes to guide insertion of backcheck shanks and later the application of reinforcement glue. Use sandpaper-covered platform with correct angle for insertion. I am using one made by WNG on which I have drawn the key outline in pencil for correct and consistent key placement. Also, I have modified the shape of the WNG insertion tool a little to include the addition of some backcheck buckskin to lightly grip backcheck like a third hand to assist positioning. The drillpress stop is set to produce 2.5" high backchecks that will work well with the 1" hammer tails. And the spindle is taped internally to not move, allowing me to set up insertion tool square to keys so backcheck surfaces will all be parallel with tails surfaces to be checked.
