The other day my truck flashed a warning light- apparently the right rear turn signal on my trailer wasn’t working.
Since it was a rainy day, I thought it would be a good time to pull it inside and see what was going on.
Both the taillights are old and one of the lenses is popping loose, so I decided to replace them both.
The first LED set I bought didn’t line up with the holes on my trailer, so I had to return them and get a different brand.
I used my grinder to clean off the metal where the taillight grounds to the trailer.
After I get everything bolted up- I hit it with some spray paint to keep it from rusting.
Then I headed to the other side and repeated the same process.
The driver’s side lens has a clear light at the bottom to light up the license plate.
I definitely recommend getting a metal license plate bracket -- I’ve lost a couple of plates with plastic brackets.
There’s lots of ways to connect low voltage wires, but I like using these connectors. They’re easy to use- just crimp them in place.
I bought this trailer brand new 23 years ago and it’s been one of the best investments I’ve made.
This is probably about the sixth set of taillights I’ve put on it.
Once I finished up- I hooked it up to my truck to test it out, and I still couldn’t get the right turn signal to work.
After some investigation- I found the problem.
Someone had borrowed my trailer and removed the 4-pin to 7-pin adapter I had on it.
They broke off the prong that controls the right-side turn signal.
I could just wire on a new plug, but when I was working under the trailer, I noticed the wires were getting brittle, so I’m just going to rewire the whole the trailer. @hausplans
