built many many arenas, takes a special type of sand to do it right, I would never use those screenings underneath, they pack too tight. need to drag the arena deep and loosen it up with two special shaped types of sand on top. you could have a full time job putting sand in and rolling it up for this gal. Made a big difference using the right stuff with proper drainage underneath on our arena.

We just built at 135 x 225 outdoor arena. Had about 16 loads of quarter down for 4"+base, followed by about 8-10 tri axle loads of masonry sand to create a 4" layer of sand for the horses. We are a hunter/jumper facility so we need a much deeper base. We do have a similar arena drag by Caroline Equipment company, funny. It was quite the feat. That is one good looking arena.

Not sure what the type of sand was, I just know that the top 8 inches was a type from Arkansas. Went back once a year for several years to re grade and pull the sand back up from around the inside rail.

I got involved in a similar job once, the quad rake is great for daily dressing, but tends to knock the dust/fines out of the rubber, which then get compacted. We found, every so often a bit deeper dig over with a tractor mounted cultivator/really stiff spring tine to loosen up the compacted fines and mix the rubber chips back below the surface to help the springiness was the best routine. Much cheaper than regular sand topups too.👍🇬🇧👍
