Hey Kirk, great info! Question, I found that my house has concrete poured all the way up to the stucco and I don't see any weep screed. (It might be covered by the concrete but I can't say for sure.) Should I have the stucco cut out and add a weep screed or leave it alone? I don't have intrusion into the house, as far as I can tell. Am I in a bad situation?

Howdy Keith, don't worry about it it's as normal as white on rice. My own home didn't have a weep screed either. Back in 1980 weep or drip screeds became code, thus all or most home before this date don't have them. As they weren't invented yet. The stucco may get a crack where the stucco meets the foundation, this may be an eyesore, but it's rare this cause any major damage.👨🏻🔬

I am in same situation, I am upgrading my home, decided to replace stucco, I see water damage to wood frame because water seeped through stucco. Soil level was above stucco level. I thought concrete would stop water seeping, it doesn’t. I see water damage where there was concrete. I would remove some soil & make sure that at least few inches of foundation is exposed if I were you.

Hey Kirk, this question is a bit urgent. I am in the middle of small deck repair project for water leak. ( Hired a deck co. to do this. ), after they remove the top layer with texture, many question popped up. I end up have to call two more contractors to review. One of the question is related to the Weep holes of deck wall are not existed. One co. said it could be covered by the sealing material plus the paint over, one company said the whole wall may need to reworked. The condo was built about 27 years ago. #1) was it already a common practice back in 1996, the builder would use the Weep screed with weep holes on the deck wall? #2) the deck has two scupper drainage, if in case there are no holes of the supposedly weep screed after trying to clean the paint or sealed layer off, does the deck wall needs to be cut off to install the new weep screed metal flashing? Would U be able to offer some advices ? Thank U in advance 🙏❣

Hi Kirk! Love your videos! I have a question concerning the stucco weep screed on my house. I recently moved into a house that's built into a mountain. I discovered an area of the foundation in which the soil rose about a foot above the weep screed. Water caused a hole in the stucco at the corner of the house and it rusted a part of the weep screed. Upon tapping the rusted part of the weep screed a rusted layer of metal fell off of the screed. There's also about a 3" section that is softer than normal when pushing in on it. Does that section of weep screed need to be replaced or can I do something to reinforce the weep screed to protect what's behind it? Thank you so much!!
@StuccoPlastering
2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Britt, relax brother, sure metal weep screed rust and deteriorate, However, I have seen garages where there was no lumber left, no lath or paper. It was just the stucco holding the whole thing up. I have seen this three times and I always push on them to see how sturdy they are, I can't budge the three I tried. Your issues are not important unless the water is entering your home. If it is, lay on your back and caulk the areas with Sikaflex 1A caulking.🍾

Great video! Kirk, I have a few questions, in terms of use plywood, how thick of a plywood should I use on a new construction framing? When it's time for me to hang the plywood, does the plywood stay flush with the 2 by 4 base of my columns or does it stick out a 1/2 inch? I hope I making sense.

Good Evening Humor Dude, The International Residential Code specifies 3/8-inch plywood for sheathing walls with a standard stud spacing of 16 inches, if the siding is nailed to the studs through the sheathing. If the nails penetrate the sheathing, but not the studs, the minimum plywood thickness that the IRC designates is 1/2 inch. Live long and plaster Kirk’s how to plastering video’s

Hello KIrk, Quick question. Is it against code to have j-bead in place of weep screed at the base of a stucco wall? I see this even in new construction?
@StuccoPlastering
Жыл бұрын
Howdy Raul, yes, it's against code and common sense. A weep screed has a 3 1/2 in width; often, you will need to drop the bottom of this weep screed at least an inch below the mudsill or plywood. J-trim or J-bead is only an inch wide so wouldn't work anyway. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1LCEqqZnkIx5mYI/ Stucco weep screeds mud-sills for code and cosmetics. kzitem.info/news/bejne/tYGEq6CFZoKFg5g/ Stucco drip screeds Flashing countering Z flashings. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2H6ZlmeroYl4gYY/Counter flashing weep stucco screed over a Z flashing. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sI59zaKmbnaqgoY/Galvanized Stucco drip screed over copper flashings. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o6qX2qygh4ibgaQ/Install Stucco weeps or drip screeds below grade. 👨🏻🔬

Kirk I have a decorative porch approximately 3 feet high with a flat roof. I have had a new rubber roof installed and still have leaking. I believe the flashing or original drip screen may be the cause of water coming in especially with driving rain. The original drip screen is about 3 inches above new roof. How can I repair the drip screen ? Do I saw higher and place a new drip screen in somehow although I think I would have to remove a lot of stucco along the bottom edge to put something new in? Sharon

Good morning Tim, the majority of homes don't have them, they became code around 1980, most homes that don't have them are painted and quite a few times. moisture seepage into the walls depends on the amount of coats of paint, the porousness of the stucco Vs it waterproofing ability and any structural movement with similar things of this nature. Good morning Wayne, no one can apply one inch as it won't hang it will sag, however you lose no time in understanding the principles of applying stucco, start applying and move forward, give the paper a chance to suck the moisture out of the stucco, when you're at the end of the wall go back to where you first stated and double up, this is the only way to apply stucco properly. Of course you have to use the correct cement plaster too. Usually called one coat stucco, or same day stucco. Live long and plaster teaching plastering video’s

It doesn't look like anyone is answering questions any longer but I'll ask one anyhow. Does anybody out there know what would cause a weep/drip screed to rust (less than ten years after installation)? I happen to live seven blocks from the beach in San Francisco but there are plenty of other stucco houses in the area without visible rust stains below their weep screeds.
@StuccoPlastering
3 жыл бұрын
Good evening Beau Witka. I happen to know the answer to this question as with all stucco-related stuff; FYI, out of over fifty thousand comments I've responded to. Not one, have I not known the answer to, this odd knowledge does not make me smart, but instead weirdo geek with no life.🤔 Okay, All weep screeds like nails are metal then galvanized. This means you take the metal and dip it into a vat of acid that galvanizes metals. This is to preserve the metal, so it does not rust. For example, let's use a sixteen-penny nail holding a red clay tile roof in place on a roof. Where the rain hits these nails and causes discolorations on sometimes white stucco walls, which, BTW, look odd as they are straight lines downward of with an odd appearance. With a nail, the hammer hits the head, thus sometimes removing the galvanization, now with rainwater, it's no longer protected, thus bleed, the metal, Usually a brownish color. With a weep screed, the trowel can scrape it when we go horizontal across the bottom as the weep screed also serves as a guild to fill out the stucco. The sand acts as sandpaper the trowel, then if scrapped enough time with the sand removes the galvanized protection. Now take all areas in the world near oceans, as the saltwater evaporates into the atmosphere, it gathers in the clouds, so when it rains, it's always kinda salty, the salt hits the exposed metal, and causing it to rust. This is a key reason why the Goldengate bridge in San Francisco seems to always be in the phase of being painted.😉 Salt rust metal very quickly. The solution, an excellent primer and paint the elastomeric types, which simply means a rubberized paint. They last the longest. One of the best here, www.stucoflex.com/, plus there is many others available. The good news is if all your stucco screed rusted to where they disintegrated completely, big deal, The stucco is not affected by salt.😏 I had seen garages with no wire nor wood left, just a stucco shell that, when I tried to push on them, couldn't budge them. Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done.
