Every SEC expert ranked OU in the middle of the pack this year, but oh hell no, OU fans were livid. And most of your media types (except this guy) kept saying everyone was disrespecting OU (that is why I watch this show BTW.... he knew it wouldn't be easy), . So many of you prognosticated that OU would win out year one... you're blue bloods, and all that. One of them told me that I wouldn't see OU lose more than 1 game a year in my lifetime. Well, he has been quiet lately. You got beat by a better team when Tennessee came to town, you struggled against a good defense at Auburn. Then you got hosed by really good Texas (hurts my soul to say that), and it looked to me like your offense mailed it in today against a really good SC defense. OU will come back. I personally hope you beat Mizzou. You can. Mizzou struggled at home against Auburn after all. I don't dislike OU at all, my daughter and son-in-law both got graduate degrees there. And I don't relish the season your having, either. It sucks. Hell, I lived through so many disappointing seasons of late where we lost games by one score, I'd never dog on OU for disappointing losses. It's a competitive conference where any team can gut you on any given weekend. The talent level is higher in the SEC, even if many of you won't admit it.... yet. I won't say "welcome to the SEC", but just the same, your not in Kansas anymore.
@sstrangee99

OU couldn't even compete in the Big 12 with the offense they have this season. Defensively, OU looks SEC ready. Offensively, OU doesn't even look WAC ready. Like RJ said, you can have the best defense in the world, but if you have an offense that can't score or move the ball, you're still going to lose. OU offense isn't even a decent one. It's the 2nd worst offense in the nation right now (I think only Kennesaw State is the only team worse now and they just entered D1 play). If OU had an offense that could move the ball, just a little bit. They would be up with everyone else in the running. Frankly, the middle of the pack to the top can switch around anytime during this season. Doesn't seem like there is any team more dominate than any other in the top half of the SEC (this is after the Georgia win against Texas tonight). So middle of the pack would have been a great place to be. But OU, offensively isn't even there.

I started following the Sooners closely during the 1978 Billy Sims season when I was in HS. I have seen 4 eras of OU national dominance (late 70s, middle 80s, early/middle 2000s, middle/late 2010s), and one extended era of OU decline which was the post Switzer 1990s. The post Switzer decline began with the celebrated promotional hiring of former player Gary Gibbs who had been the much loved DC/linebackers coach. Gibbs was an awesome position coach and coordinator - straight out of Hollywood central casting; carved from granite and good looking. All the players loved him. Many of OU's great players like Brian Bosworth and Kevin Murphy credited Gibbs with much of their development as a players. Although initially hobbled by NCAA sanctions, Gibbs turned out to be an absolute disaster as a HC, and the program went into a steep decline under his watch. Yes, the program crashed to the ground under John Blake, but it went into the downward spiral under Gibbs. However, in Blake's defense, he had assembled a national championship group of recruits only to get fired and Bob Stoops come in to lead them on to glory. Gary Gibbs was forced to resign (fired) by OU, never again hired as a HC, but went on to very notable success in both the SEC and NFL as a DC and position coach. History often repeats itself. I love everything about Brent Venables; however, it appears that he is walking in the footsteps of Gary Gibbs. There is WAY more on the line for the OU football program now in 2024 then there was in 1994 when Gibbs was fired. Realistically, as much as we all like him and everything that he stands for, it may be best if OU moves on from Venables - as we did 30 years ago from Gibbs. Quick side note: Athletic Director Joe Castiglione may possibly have made a rare (for him) hiring misstep, in that the other finalist (behind Venables) for the job was Dan Lanning - who disparately wanted the job. Oops !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This reminds me a lot of Dabo's first few years. He had some so-so seasons, a few good years, but didn't break out until he finally realized his offense alone couldn't get it done. So he went out and found a DC that could handle that side of the ball so he could focus on offense. Brent Venables needs his Brent Venables. He needs an OC that can handle his side of the ball, so Brent is free to focus on the defensive side. Seth Littrell is not that OC. Nowhere he's been have they ever been great on offense. He's OC'd some good offenses, but his highwater mark is becoming the head coach at North Texas. Littrell is the Ted Roof of the offense.

I got so much 💩 for being the realest around here. RJ is as guilty as anybody for the Oklahoma big talk. Commented on OU vids before the season: Venables put this team together with his heart, not his head. I stand by that.

I am not sure any head coach can do much better than Brent with this team right now. I mean hell even Brent's first year the team was pretty good save for several games where Dillion was hurt and did not play. Most of our games where we lost were I think 1 score. Then last year was a pretty good year. It is hard to see how good a coach really is when all you got is bad players. I would like to see how he does with a decent team. This year is a wash so time to start lookin forward to next season. I don't see Brent getting fired at the end of the year. They extended his contract for a reason. Hes gonna get at least 1 more season to make improvements. But he better get some good Offensive coaches or else that WILL be the downfall of Brent.

@@alphadragongamingFTW OU doesn't have any WR's or OL's because Head Coach Brent V allowed the defense to use them for target practice over the summer to goose their egos. That's why so many offense players got hurt over the summer. OU extended Brent's contract because they mistakenly believed the ONE sort of good year in the Big 12 would be repeated. We know now that is not going to happen.

Love the show and your vulnerability today. I thought Arnold looked good. The O-Line is the problem. Hopefully OU gets that O-Line fixed before next season. If Arnold decides to stay at Oklahoma then I think burning his redshirt iIs a smart move. This season is a wash so let him get his experience. He’ll be battle-tested for next year. Watching him throw the ball today, I’m convinced if he has a good O-Line he would damn good. My real concern for OU is if Venerables wants a new Offensive Coordinator he may have trouble finding one. No OC worth their salt is gonna wanna come work for a coach on the hot seat. It’s a tough position to be in. I love Venerables as a human being and a defensive coordinator, but I’m not sure he’s the guy to bring OU back to prominence. Take it from a guy who watched coaches come and go at Texas for the last decade. Sometimes you gotta cut bait. Hopefully OU doesn’t lose a decade like Texas did. Nobody wants that.

The offense would be bad in any league. The issue is in SEC every team is capable of exploiting your weaknesses. So even though you may still be a good team with mistakes, in the SEC your going to look like an awful team. And each weak even with your A game, if the other team bring an A game, because of glaring weaknesses you will probably lose to SEC teams. In other leagues you can have a weakness and still beat the majority of your schedule, play one SEC team during the year, get a win and claim to be better than the whole SEC, but you didnt have to play another SEC team of the same caliber for 5 weeks straight. Thats the difference that good teams outside the SEC dont understand. But now OU does. You brought up Clemson vs SC. Have you realized that if Clemson had SC schedule every year, they never would have had a record to make a championship, not because theyre a bad team, but because their schedule would have worn on them differently than an ACC schedule. 🤷🏿♂️ Edit: Texas is undoubtedly good, but how are they going to be looking after 5 straight SEC games?

RJ. A DEFENSIVE COACH CAN'T PERFORM AT THE SAME LEVEL AS A HEAD COACH. EXAMPLES : MANNY DIAS, MUSCHAMP AND NOW VENABLES. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PICK YOUR FRIENDS FOR HEAD COACHING POSITIONS. REALLY FEEL FOR THOSE FANS SINCE I AM ALSO A FAN.

Went to my first game in 97. OU Syracuse. Been a fan all my life. I can’t remember a time I was more embarrassed. Back then we were kind of already expecting to lose. Sad times. I don’t want to be back there. But week in and week out I expect to lose. Went to the Red River with my wife and it was the first time I can remember I was on the train and just knew it was gonna be a bad day. I have my tickets for Baton Rouge. And I’m scared. But I’m a sooner for life. We will be back. Soon.
