Say pussy, cunt, snatch, twat (I may not like it but some do), slit, hole-- you can even use vulva or vagina every now and then! Oh my God, I just got a memory back about this video game called Angels of Death. There's this doctor character who was obsessed over how dead the main girl's eyes were. This isn’t too bad considering how all of the characters are mentally unwell and are very over the top, but the doctor always refers to eyes as 'peepers'. No matter how obsessed little 14 year old me liked edgy stories like this, I could never get over how dumb that was 😂😂😂 Edit: Hey, I looked up the game and saw that it got an anime adaptation. A part of me wants to watch and see if they kept that 'peepers' description.
@CantarellaRose

They do! Only in the dub because "peepers" exists solely in the English localization of the game. Even the Eng subs don't use peepers, of which I am still disappointed by as a Danny liker. I feel like I’m one of the few readers/writers that is actually perfectly fine using “growled” or “hissed” to describe dialogue. I’m sure it’s been overused in some YA book, but for me I’ve always just imagined “growled” dialogue as saying something in a deep, gravelly voice, and “hissed” dialogue said in a low sharp whisper. It communicates both the way someone is saying something AND gives some personality to it, and I honestly enjoy characters being given slight animalistic descriptions when they’re angry. A person who is hissing their words and slithering around corners? Love it. Snake-coded. Someone who growls and bares their teeth? Dog-coded. I associate most people irl with some random animal so it helps me envision the characters even better. Honestly it kind of is my personal pet peeve when I see TikToks like “erm how do you curl your lip? How do you look THROUGH your eyelashes? How do you ___?”. Girl we are reading. Give them some creative space. Do you REALLY want you books to be written completely literally with no fun interpretive language? Maybe you do but I do not. Sorry for that rant, but am I alone here? Idk it just seems like such a popular bookish opinion nowadays.
@moseyonover733
10 ай бұрын
I genuinely think most people who "hate" it when authors use "hissed" as a dialogue tag don't do so organically. It became a meme at some point and now it's a social faux pas to react to it with anything besides a pre-programmed, "Haha, but you can't hiss unless there's an "S" in the sentence!" But... you definitely can. "H", "Sh", "Ch", "Ck" and arguably hard "Th" and "T" are all "hissing" phonemes, for one, and as you pointed out, it's also a word for a harsh whisper, which doesn't require any particular phonemes at all. So many "pet peeves" and their amusingly badly thought out justifications honestly just read as the person uncritically aping some stand-up comedy routine they saw.

"conversar" is the main word for that in portuguese, as common as "talk" is in english. there are so many more of these that i'm just not remembering rn lmao

This video is good but don't let it distract you from the fact that gru is the most powerful person in the world First according to the height of a Minion (which is 3.5 feet on average) Gru is 4 minions tall, which means he is a godly size of 14 feet tall. Second if any of you remember the original Despicable Me, you Know there is a scene when Vector kidnaps the three girls and shoots a series of heat-seeking misses at Gru, he then dodge them all. According to the speed of an average ballistic missile (1900 mph) and the size of the missile according to his ankle size, Gru can perceive and move at such a speed that the missiles only move 9.5 miles per hour, 0.5% of their original speed. Plus after this Gru punches a shark and it is paralyzed meaning its spine is probably shattered, to remind you it would require a force greater than 3,000 newtons to fracture the spine. That’s equal to the impact created by a 500-pound car crashing into a wall at 30 miles per hour. I rest my case.

It wasn't warned, and it CERTAINLY wasn't tagged either! Like i was expecting something *bad* to happen, since it was a Trivia Murder Party fanfic and that game's premise is overall very messed up, but i was expecting at most *murder* bad, i was NOT expecting to read a presumed 30-40 year old man restraining and sexually assaulting a 12 year old girl and forcing her childhood best friend who he also restrained to watch. I don't know if it makes it better or worse that the author was underage, that it came out of left field and left just as quickly without it ever being brought up or drawn attention to, or the fact that the two ended up feeling satisfied(???) by the end, but that was the first time i felt genuinely revolted and physically had to do a double take by something i read.

I don’t have any original fanf-icks that weren’t already mentioned in the video but here’s a little piece of advice I picked up that has served me well in my writing, fanfic or otherwise. (and as of December I’ll have three physically published works in anthologies, so I’d say I know what I’m talking about.) always assume that your audience is smarter than you. Always assume that your audience knows every little thing there is to know about anything your characters say or do or where they live (if those things exist IRL, of course.) What I mean by that is; if your character is doing something- say, smoking for example ( be it a cigarette, The Devils Lettuce, anything like that)- familiarizing yourself with terms and habits people who smoke have or use will help your writing seem a lot more compelling. And you can apply that concept to pretty much anything. Always do some research!!! because if you’re writing just on prior knowledge on something youre not personally familiar with, chances are, your audience (who are smarter than you and know everything) will see you as, for lack of a better term, a Fucking Geed™️. hence why a bunch of people in this video agree that people NOT doing proper research on things they try to write about makes reading stuff based on incorrect information an absolute cringefest. I’m not saying go read the entire Wikipedia page for a given topic, just try and learn the basics of something before writing about it

For the skin thing: you can make it work in few scenarios. 1) you describe your white characters like that too ("milky skin" is a common way to do so. There's a lot of white and beige out there to pick from as well). 2) your character is a cannibal so food adjectives make sense, or 3) find something other than food. The weirdness most people feel comes from the food association. If you want to be poetic but are scared to come across as racist, pick some dark thing that matches the character's complexion and go for it. I never see anyone complaining when a black character is described has "having skin as dark and smooth as ebony" or something - because ebony is both dark and a rich type of wood with positive associations. BUT these are all opinions. Some people may hate poetry in character descriptions. Keep that in mind.

As a writer, the fear of being repetitive or losing the audience's interest has been a longstanding problem for me but I've found over the years that people will be interested, that's why they're reading. If your story and characters are captivating and you write in a comprehensive way... you're probably golden. I will say I stand by emotive words such as hissed and growled because language doesn't always have to be literal. It's creative writing afterall, emotive language is used to paint pictures and add personality and things like that make perfect sense to me.

I'm probably the most picky fanfic reader you could imagine. I usually let little things slide, keyword on *little,* but all in all―I'm picky as hell. Not exactly proud of it, because these are free fanworks written by passionate fans (and hell, writing even a singular chapter is an amazing accomplishment by itself), and I end up just feeling like a judgemental bitch. But it's the truth. I can't help my pet peeves, and I guess I gotta accept that. I mean, I could come up with an entire list. I'll only list a couple, though: • No spaces between paragraphs. • Too much "they said/they said snarkingly/they laughed" and not leaving a dialogue by itself. • Hurt/comfort that, somehow, turns into torture porn. • As someone else mentioned, ""I love you,"" my sister said lovingly." • All caps lock to indicate a character yelling. • Obvious favoritism towards a certain character. And I mean dead obvious. Very little flaws shown, flaws easily brushed off, other characters outright bashed to make the favorite character look better, other characters given little screen time, favorite character having more scenes with the main character even in unnecessary situations... there's one character I often see getting this treatment in fanfics. Ten cookies to anyone who guesses. Makes me want to rip my hair out every. Damn. Time. • Dialogue left without a period, comma, or anything else. • Don't get me fucking started (pardon my language, I'm just so irritated at the reminder of how many times I've seen this) on "they bit their lip so hard until it bled." My older brother and I discussed this―you would have to be completely out of control of your own body, and it solely focusing on biting your lip, to accomplish that. *Not* out of nervous habit. Other than that, your body is built to send pain signals to your brain and make you stop. The lip is *tough* to make bleed, both inside and out, with your teeth alone by biting it unless you're biting *the dead skin* off with your teeth.

@DelilahDarling17

@@nara9404 I love "said," and think that when people say "said is dead," that it's silly. I especially think that too many "she sobbed/she snapped/she *insert anything other than said here*" makes writing sound way too clunky, when a simple "she said" or leaving a sentence on its own will suffice. But I have run into the entire opposite, as well. In fact, a very close writing friend of mine struggled with this for a long while. And that was, yes, too many "they said" in a singular chapter. For example: > "I hate this place," Whitney said. "Well," Adrian said, "we'll have to stick with it for now." "I know that!" Whitney said, sighing. "I'm just complaining." "I know. It's annoying." Adrian said. "Shut it." Whitney said. And so on. No movement, no emotions expressed, no sentences left alone, nothing more except "said," making the characters feel empty and monotone to me. In fact, imagine that example, but replace "said" with "smirked" for one fanfic I read. For the whole first chapter and the rest. If the characters weren't smiling, that was really the only break of "they smirked" you'd get. So, I do love "said," don't get me wrong! I just think, like just about everything when it comes to writing, it takes balance. As you said, specifically, it's what I personally consider "too much" that gets me.

*LGBT characters being depicted in period-inaccurate ways with inaccurate language and attitudes.* Like, you don't have to include explicit homophobia/transphobia or anything, but most people were not educated on LGBT terminology and how to be inoffensive by modern standards. If your fic takes place pre-1965 you shouldn't be using "transgender" at all. Transsexual (1949) or transvestite (1910) would be used. "Homosexual" (1869) or "gay" (1938) were often used instead of bisexual pre-1970s, because before then, the word "bisexual" referred to people or animals/plants with mixed sex characteristics. "Lesbian" can be traced back to the 1700s but didn't see mainstream usage until the 1960s and 70s with the rise of lesbian-centric feminism. Also having characters be super progressive and accepting by modern standards... I know this is a weird hill to die on, but I'm just tired as an LGBT person in the Cuphead fandom, where one of the most popular ships is an m/m pairing, with a character commonly headcanoned as trans, with people who love to write unnatural sequences with characters going OOC to talk about how proud they are of the other for coming out as something that wasn't even widely known about until decades later. It bugs me to an unreasonable degree.

Very off-topic, but it's stuff like this that scared me away from real-world stuff for a long while. Fantasy's always worked out wonderful for me; it's an entirely new world of my own and I get to decide what goes on. But if you want to throw magic into the real cultures of the real world, you're probably definitely gonna have to make a statement about some very controversial topic at some point. Like. As much as I want to believe the Europeans and Native Americans held hands when they first met, history's just. like that. Looping back to your LGBTQ+ comment, it's always an odd thing for me to think about, say, transgender people living in Chicago, 1865 or something. I don't want to believe a character of mine from the Industrial Period would be transphobic or homophobic, but they might?? very well be?? if they even understood those words at all.

@@yeahbutwhy8788 You absolutely don't have to write a character as being bigoted just because of the time they were in. Would their opinions be popular? Probably not, assuming a realistic setting. Maybe they would be accidentally insensitive. But you absolutely don't have to write LGBT suffering into a story for it to be a good/compelling/realistic portrayal of LGBT people. I'm just a stickler for period-accurate terminology and get super annoyed when people apply modern understandings of gender and sexuality to a setting and cast where it doesn't fit. Fantasy settings are very good for avoiding this issue altogether though, as you said! We do deserve stories where our existence was always considered normal and acceptable. But it might come off a bit strange to showcase other atrocities and hardships from a certain time period, while simultaneously painting over LGBT struggles. I was actually vagueing about Cuphead in my original comment, since it does a great job combining a silly cartoon Fleischer world with the various economic hardships and vices of The Great Depression, which is why it's so jarring to me to see fics where LGBT rights are pretty much caught up to how they are now (in the US). It feels tonally inconsistent imo. Again: the focus doesn't have to be on LGBT hardship, it just bugs me having characters talk AT the audience about LGBT rights as if they aren't literally in the middle of The Great Depression and one of the major characters isn't literally The Devil from The Bible.

@@shrimpdan2557You're right, you're right. I think I'll find insensitivity to be a sweet-spot. They're definitely not gonna go out of their way to commit a hate crime, god no. But the topic of "LGBTQ+" can seem as far away from them as the Americas, so why bother with it. I've thought about that a handful of times... and it seems like we just don't want to make any current "political" statements. LGBTQ+ issues are seen as very modern, trans issues even moreso than gay issues, it seems. It can come across as. obvious? So we just accept them into the world as being as normal as left-handed people and leave it at that. But posting on mainstream social media your character of your mythological East Asian fantasy world described as a "demisexual pansexual aromantic demigirl" will get you immediately called out as a Tumblr user. And this is what you found fault with, no? Using words like this in a setting where they shouldn't exist. If it's just for fun then whatever, but that's tone inconsistency if I ever did see it. Substituting words for more made-up in-universe terminology can help, I imagine. I'm keeping it flexible, but I call myself a cis aro-lesbian. But representation of LGBT struggles always came off as weird to me, because I live with a very accepting family, and no one really cares about that here. All my characters end up being cisgender and their sexuality left ambiguous because I don't feel like labelling them. Writing explicitly queer characters makes me feel like I have a job to do, and I don't like that about myself :/ but you put it best, hardship isn't necessary for a good queer character. ... A cis male character from a magical world got suddenly "turned into a girl" while also naked, in front of all his classmates, who proceeded to make sexual comments misgendering him, while he was clearly miserable. Worst of all it was written in the POV of the "bi-curious" protagonist, who described his naked body in the most dysphoria-inducing way I have ever seen. It was actually physically painful to read, it made me feel unimaginably horrible about myself. In the notes at the beginning of the chapter they even mentioned "tw: some misgendering, not of a trans character, you'll just see". I wasn't sure how I could tell the author they managed to trigger my dysphoria so badly, that it gave me an instant-counter to any imposter syndrome I could've felt. Glad I'll never read it again, though. That shit hurt.

It just feels way too perfect and plasticy, especially when it tries to convince you to take place in current time. At least omegaverse pregnancy has an excuse. Due to male presenting people commonly being able to and expected to carry children, it wouldn't be associated with femininity too much, thus probably causing less dysphoria. And since society expects this, there aren't any potential shitty assholes. It's the perfect solution. Then again, not many like actively reading/writing omegaverse without any of the porn. @@マーロンくんxX_Marlongamerjuice_X yeah. I like writing trans fics as a way to basically project on characters, lol. I made a whole collection for it. I know some trans men are cool with getting pregnant, but the thought fills me with horror. And its always the effeminant boys, too. I'm pretty fem myself but its tiring after a while. I remember recently I made one of the older, masculine characters trans and felt really satisfying for some reason

I once was reading a fic that I was already on the edge of clicking off, but then a blind character was described as "looking at the other's scars" and later to look at another's character eye's color. That's what the last straw for me.

it’s important to remember how most of these come down to personal preference. like, i personally HATE kissing. i hate the thought of it, i hate thinking about it, i hate hate hate it. (call me crazy but i don’t want someone else’s saliva in my mouth???) but i know that’s an unpopular opinion. one time i clicked off a fic for using the phrase “she drank from him” because it made me physically nauseous, but i wouldn’t ask the author to remove that from the fic entirely. some people like that and that’s okay.

think there should be a 'saliva exchange' tag? yeah... went to a camp and they actually asked if people weren't alright with exchanging saliva through sharing of utensils and the like. personally, idgaf, like i do most things. 💀

One thing i saw in a fic or two that bugged me is a first person POV (I know a lot of people don't like it, but i personally don't mind it so much, although i myself don't tend to write it unless the source material is first person as well, otherwise I default to third person) where there was a line that went something like, "My blue eyes stared directly into his brown ones" and it's like, this is supposed first person, it's from this character's perspective, so while obviously they know their own eye color, they're not actually looking at their own eyes. So unless they're looking into a mirror or something, it makes no sense to describe their eye color in that situation when you’re writing the story directly from their perspective. Like I can understand if it was third person limited, where you're showimg the character's thoughts and feelings but are still writing it from an outside perspective, but when you’re writing it as if the character themself is telling the story, they wouldn't describe their eye color when talking about looking at something.

specifically in regard to historical fiction/fanfiction: the term "with child." That term wasn't used in ancient or even somewhat modern history. It came around in the late 1600s, and later was used because Hollywood (1940s, I love Lucy-era) thought the word 'pregnant' was crude. To be pregnant is to be filled with something e.i. pregnant with child. Old English speakers just said the word 'pregnant.' Don't throw a "with child" at me, it ruins the vibes for me 😅

I read something recently that kept using "cutie" as a petname, which would be fine, if that wasnt the ONLY petname ever used in the entire 25k words 17 chapter story. Like..you couldnt think if a single other petname that would've worked? Didnt help they often make remarks that the one being called cutie was "innocent" and "naive." I think at one point they even said they were like a child? 🤢

When they don't use quotation marks for dialogue and, instead, choose to write it with bullet points like a shopping list. Idk if I'm the only person that's encountered this but it really throws me off. What's the point of doing it like that? It's not like typing quotes is hard or anything.

When a character says terminology they canonically wouldn’t at the point the fic is set. Like - I understand making a continuity mistake but sometimes it’s so glaring to me I just get uncomfortable. It’s like: if this guy knows that at this point in the story… what else does he know?!?

For me it's anachronistic technologies. I once saw a Spy x Family fic in which Loid was "scrolling through parent forums". In the 1960s - early 1970s. Sure. Some FMA fanfics have this problem too: the example I remember the best is characters using a microwave (in the 1910s). Yes, some technologies in the FMA-verse are canonically more advanced than they were in our universe's 1910s (mainly military tech and prosthetics), but some technologies would seem really out of place there. Also, Japanese honorifics or just random words in Japanese in (pseudo)European settings. Why would you use "Taisa" and "Nii-san"? Every English translation uses "Colonel" and "Brother"

The hair one is the only really hard line I draw here, though in truth I haven’t run into may of the others often. Idk usually what throws me off a story is less any one pet peeve and more issues with structure/characterization. Like if most chapters are just ‘two characters in a nondescript box talking and doing nothing else’ that wears down pretty quick, especially if their personalities are of from canon.

Personally I don’t mind darker skinned characters being described as a certain shade of brown or tan, there’s a huge spectrum and “brown” “black” or “dark” doesn’t really cover all of them… Carmel, chocolate, coffee etc. are all actual shades of brown and not just foods… Like I’m half Mexican. I’m not tan, I’m not white, the only way to describe my skin is really “mocha” and I think that sounds pretty nice tbh
