It seems like a lot of interior space is lost in the sides of the van where the windows would be in a passenger van. My E transit came lined with black plastic panels installed with the plastic clips. I installed revnuts in the holes where the clips go, so I can use stainless screws instead. The plastic panels can be used as patterns to locate where the screws go in Birch plywood or sanded plywood panels. This should eliminate the need for furring strips. I may eventually cover the plywood with thin Cedar shiplap or tongue and groove, but plan to make the panels so I can remove them with the stainless screws.

Thanks! Very helpful! We are doing the cockpit and door insulation after the fact... most of the build is done, but we saved some things for last.

Awesome, congrats on being almost done! We hope we will get there someday, haha

There could be a lot of small storage cubbies in the walls. I'm going to use some of those small areas if I can in my Transit

I just had driver, passenger, and windshield coated with ceramic tinting on the doors and a basically clear membrane on the windshield. It's a big help! Especially when driving it protects our arms from the sun.

Your videos have been so helpful. My husband and I are converting a ford transit currently and frequently use you guys for reference. Can you explain how you tackled the tongue and groove in the front where it curves so dramatically a little more? We are struggling trying to make it work in ours. Have been scratching our heads, asking our friends, trying nails, glue, different methods and just nothing is working. Thanks!!

I understand your choice of non toxic insulation materials however as a resident of the Northeast I am concerned that your choices i.e. R value will end with cold nights and power drain in an effort to maintain a comfortable environment. In addition the use of propane will result in moisture released into the interior of the van.

Thanks for your thoughts - we had the same concerns but hope that traveling with the weather + ventilation will help a lot.

As with any camper (Class A,B,C,slide in) living/breathing and cooking in the space will produce moisture. Ventilation will be your friend. Happy camping.

Great job, especially taking de time to fill the ribs and the doors. Do you intend to top all this with a vapor barrier like refletix? How many cans of adhesives did you use and how many man/hours did it take to complete the insulation. I intend to do do the same type of insulation on my transit just like yours that i should receive at the beginnig of febuary.

Thank you! We aren't doing a vapor barrier, but we will be adding Low-E reflective foam core to cover the ribs and frame inside the van to eliminate thermal bridge. We've used 2.5 cans of spray adhesive so far, which included doubling up on the walls since we had a lot of insulation left. We spent roughly 20 hours (5 days part time) on it and I (Brit) could only help for one of those so it was mostly Mike by himself in that time.

3M 90 is NOT a good choice for the hi temp environment of a van. It WILL degrade and start to come loose after a year or so of high heat. Best to use the DAP high temp or automotive high temp headliner glue instead!

What were your final measurements of the headliner piece and did you use 2 full rolls of thinsulate? Thx!
@britandmike
2 жыл бұрын
The headliner piece was probably 4 feet deep, and then the Thinsulate roll measures 5 feet across which perfectly fits across the ceiling. We also shoved some Thinsulate down into either side of the headliner behind the foam blocks. We did use the 2 full rolls but doubled up our insulation on the walls (where windows would be in a passenger van) and otherwise tried to use it all up, so you probably don’t need two rolls if you don’t do that.

@@britandmike thanks for reply, I'm watching all of your vids. I saw the end where you talked about using it all doubled but got excited and asked prematurely! Then I got on eBay and there are different thicknesses, 200, 400, 600. Which did you use?
@britandmike

@@ericsheill9152 we used 600 after reading FarOutRide’s blog post and that’s what they used and recommended! We got 70 linear feet and followed a lot of their blog post directions: faroutride.com/thinsulate/

What about killmat in the front roof under the headliner?
@britandmike

We didn’t kilmat there, but we did use Thinsulate up there which has some sound deadening properties as well.

Yes, I put several large Kilmats in that space. You can pull the headliner open a bit and slide the mat down to stick it to the roof.

It’s in the first flat section of the roof right behind the seats! We did not have to support it, it was fairly light. We did have to add supports for our Dometic A/C though.

@@britandmike thank you. I bought the same van but I’m black and my & I have been following your build. We are coping many things. When I initially saw the difficulties with the AC install I sent mine back. Wish I would have kept it. I bought 2 maxxair fans instead. Great shows. I’ll continue to follow you guys. 👍🏾
