Oh, that’s terrible you had to go through that but I’m glad you’re doing well. That is one very nice insulation sandwich, you could hear the difference and I’m sure it will keep you comfortable in any season. Thanks so much for your wonderful episode.

I thought you were finished with the rock wool. The final layer attached to the underside of the rafters with all the seams taped as a vapor barrier was very smart. Will you add furring strips before attaching interior ceiling paneling? Or just screw directly on top? I think I should start taking notes 😊. Thanks for the tip on safety eyewear.

Definitely adding furring strips. It’s going to be interesting to get it as symmetrical as possible. 😂
@ShikokuFoodForest
Жыл бұрын
@@CaribooAdventure To get it symmetrical, I would just make lots of measurements from each end of the room. For example from the floor up to where you want the furring strips to start. But, I see what you mean. With the insulation being so smooth, there are not many points of reference. I guess you could measure from the highest point on the roof down . May be easier if you finish the walls first.

I had a great time, thank you. ‘The music had a good beat and you could dance to it’ lol. Seriously this was great. Everything from the editing on fast forward, to small out takes, and safety tips, even Easter eggs at the end. What will you put over the ridged insulation on the ceiling. Are those screws with the white caps in the way of a boarded ceiling?

Wow, now I am seeing how much insulation you installed in your roof! Looks like about R40? How warm did your cabin feel over the first winter?
@CaribooAdventure
Жыл бұрын
This winter will be the first time where we’ll actually feel the insulation! (Last year we didn’t have very cold temperatures after doing the roof insulation) And yes, it’s R48 😂 Probably too much, hahaha, but in summer it was actually fantastic inside already (nice and cool)

@@CaribooAdventure Oh yah, I forgot, perhaps this is your first winter. Well, I think you can never actually have too much insulation. You likely will not need to burn as much wood in your wood stove to keep warm. Will you sleep on the 2nd floor? It may get too hot, since heat rises. What R-value does the Building Code recommend or require for roofs?
@CaribooAdventure

We’ll sleep on the first floor indeed! Jelger told me with this type of ceiling we’d need R26.5. (But it differs with different designs apparently)

@@CaribooAdventure Hello, just wondering, what will you use the 2nd floor for? Also, why did you decide to over-insulate beyond R-26.5 to almost double at R-48(!)? From my research on heat loss: air leaks (35%), windows/doors (18-20%), floors (15-18%), walls (12-14%) and ceilings (10%). I know northern BC is cold 🥶.

Hello, I just discovered your channel, so inspiring! btw, may I know how much you spend for insulation?
@CaribooAdventure

Thank you very much! :) So far for the roof we spent $2500. (Because it’s rock wool and so many layers) We’re expecting the insulation for the walls to be a similar expense, but will order that this fall.

@@CaribooAdventure Hi Jelger & Tanya, did you really spend $2500 just for the roof insulation? I’m surprised. Much more expensive than I would have thought.

@@ShikokuFoodForest we sure did... because it's R48, haha. You could probably get away with less. ;)

@@CaribooAdventure Hi again, just wondering, for northern BC’s cold winters, what R-value is recommended under the roof? R-48 is probably adequate for Santa’s Castle at the North Pole! Haha!
@CaribooAdventure
Жыл бұрын
@@ShikokuFoodForest haha, certainly overkill! We needed R26.5 but it depends on the type of ceiling + the cold zone you’re in. Jelger uses a book called “the Canadian woordarme house construction” by the CMHC. It has the building code in a more digestible way. Might be helpful!

Are you sure the roof ventilation is correctly installed? It looks like you have not done the correct blocking and air sealing in the ridge and rafter end.
@CaribooAdventure
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! We had it custom designed by a contractor, so we followed instructions. The blocks were not necessary, because we’ll still put metal soffits on the rafter tails to keep bugs and wildlife out. The ridge is vented under the ridge cap (foam vent screen). As for sealing, it’s fully closed off on the inside (seams are taped), so a complete vapor barrier.

Did you put the rigid insulation boards directly under the sheathing or did you use rafter baffling between the insulation and the sheathing?
