This is by far the most helpful intarsia cast on I found.

Why did you connect through the back instead of the front of the stitches? I’m just curious.

Hi there! When moving one stitch over the other, I just find that it is easier to engage the stitch on the left hand by accessing it from the back. You could move the stitch over by lifting it from the front if you want and get the same result.

Very helpful tutorial, especially for beginners in intarsia. Now I wonder would the cast on be done the long tails cast on version without the slipknot? I prefer that way of long tails casting. Would it work here?

It would work but that first stitch might be a bit more loose than if you use the slip knot for the first stitch. Give it a try! I imagine that once some fabric has been knitted you might need to finesse that join and weave in the end to create a seamless edge.

@@KyleKunnecke thank you! I will give it a try and see what happens. It will be an experiment so fun either way :)

How do you keep the first knit/purl row tight? This is a brilliant tutorial. Thank you

Glad you found it useful! After the cast on is completed, the first knit/purl row is worked as normal. If you find that your first row when working intarsia seems a little more loose than you prefer, consider using a needle one size smaller for that first row after the CO, then switch back to the original needle and continue the project. As you know, swatching is your friend - so give it a try on a smaller piece of fabric to make sure the results are what you want before casting on for the project. Have fun!
