I laughed at this. My MSI laptop has thermal throttling issues. No vents are under the fan intakes on the bottom and the cooler boost compensates for this poor design. I first raised up the bottom off the desk to help, but it wasn't much better. I threw a bigger storage stick in and left the bottom off to test. Bottom of case off solved the problem. For a bit I left the screws out while it was at home and would pop the bottom off while it was in an A vertical on my desk and hooked up to monitor and dock. I plan to pick up a spare bottom and cut holes in it. It was so bad though I considered returning it. Only things that saves MSI is the advanced BIOS, they offered an all AMD Advantage configuration I wanted at a sale price.

The only way Intel could even think about having an advantage over the other handhelds is if they worked with MSI in tandem on this. All the other companies are making their software in house, but if MSI got actual Intel engineers and software guys to help with their stuff they may have an advantage in the stability and functionality of their software and tools.

Dave we'd really appreciate a full review once it's a released product. Preproduction reviews are always skewed to developer's side, because they can caveat anything they want
@alexandremaximov3885

I would argue it's the other way around. Preproduction units are usually missing more things than retail ones, and they're far more prone to bugs or just having certain things not work.
@askmedov

@@alexandremaximov3885 I mean that both final and preprod can, say, have bad battery life and performance. If you supply Dave2D with a released product, then his verdict on battery life or performance is final. And nobody buys them. But if you give a "preprod" unit (even if you're not planning on any changes), then he can't make such conclusions without a caveat. And then you're not missing any sales, because Dave2d isn't outright criticizing the product. And therefore it's imperative that whatever you send to reviewers is marked as preprod, because they can't make any negative final conclusions.
@apoclypse

@@alexandremaximov3885 I think the point the OP is making is that when Dave2D is presenting the device, MSI can say what they don't want mentioned since its a preproduction unit or what they don't want tested because it's preproduction unit. So you mostly end up with a very surface level "first impression" video that doesn't actually test what the product is like in its final form. This happened with the ROG Ally. Everyone fell over themselves to give their first impression of the preproduction unit, then never really mentioned it again. All of the issues the unit had weren't even really mentioned after launch.

10 years ago, we had intel 4000 series chunky laptops--plugged in that couldn't get consistent 30ps at 720p LOW in games like Assassins Creed Blackflag, now we have this. I cant wait to see how well these handhelds evolve 5 years from now, might not need a gaming laptop by then anymore

Love the way how Dave explained the difference between 2 products. Better cooling shall be important while traveling around, especially in those southern regions with humid weather., and it shall stand for better sustainable performance under long-hour gameplay.

My thoughts on the cooler boost... If they have thunderbolt (which is a very intel thing) you can use an External GPU and then utilize the cooler boost to help stop it from thermal throttling while acting like a desktop. So it's less for mobile and more for the home experience. Bet their dock is going to try to take full advantage of those settings.

I wish msi took a lenovo approach, and actually did something interesting and innovative with the device. The appeal to hardcore gamer is something that has been done to death. If it was a tiny bit more casual and just had cooler features (even like a trackpad for navigation in UIs) I think its performance numbers wouldn't matter as much, and it might actually get more popular than the ally. Though I do own 0 handhelds, so maybe my opinion doesn't really matter lol

the good thing is the design and plastic is not as cheap looking as the Legion Go, the bad thing is that i can't ignore the thought of it copying the design of the Ally since the button shape (especially the start/select and duo shortcut key on the bottom of it) is so similar at least from the front

I love that the handheld Windows market has been booming lately since the Steam Deck. But, I just want to see one reasonably small sized form factor, reasonably powerful Windows handheld like the GPD Win 4 or even the recent Ayaneo Slide, but with the dedicated level of system support of the Steam Deck/Steam OS. A Nintendo Switch size handheld, I don't know. I just don't want to look like a massive dork holding this comically giant handheld in public.
