I had the original Intellivision as a kid in the early 1980s. I never knew Intellivision 2 existed until a few years ago. This is the first time I’ve seen the INTV 2 box with Lock n Chase pack in game. The one I usually see is the Burgertime pack in.

I remember when a friend got his Intellivision back in the day, Astrosmash was bundled with it, i also remember seeing burgertime as the pack in game. On the PAL versions of the original intellivision the power cord plugs in, it isn't hard wired.

I am planing to get me an Intellivision to give it another shot. I do like the system but absolutely hate the controller. The one I had a few years ago had these little joystick add ons for the controller and made life so much better. When I do get one I am leaning towards the Sears branded Super Tele-Games model. I just think its the best looking Intellivision system. Great video bro!

Ya I have seen those joystick ad ons. I think though that they would only be useful on some of the more arcade platform titles.

The thing about the controllers is most people are heavy handed with the disc. A lighter touch goes a long way with those controllers. I have no help for you with the fire buttons :)

Fantastic comparison. We finally have both but only had the 2 for the longest time. We always thought it strange that the "later" system didn't play ALL the games. The original is certainly far more iconic though. Still have the voice module--that thing is so corny and great. And it's also so incredible that back in the day you had the means to play other systems' games on different consoles!

Informative! Thx. I recently purchased the Intellivision Classic Games compilation for PS1, and I fell in love. It makes me want the real thing! Certain games like Pinball work great with the ps1 controller using R1 and L1 for the flippers, and the simple space shooters, Space Armada and Astrosmash also work well, as well as Auto Racing, Snafu, and Night Stalker. They're getting lots of play! But others would really benefit from having an actual number pad, like the excellent Space Battle, instead of having to pull up a vitual number pad on the screen, which feels kinda clumsy.. and some of the games I still haven't wrapped my mind around without those nice overlays to learn, and having to pull out the virtual pad during play just isn't quite right. I actually like the newer style to the IntelliVision II best but the tight trigger buttons and lack of clickyness in the number pad is a turn off. "and the few non compatible games is wack" The original IntelliVision seems like the winner, but I have to be sure the controllers work well since they aren't easy to interchange. The game store by me has plenty of Intellivision games for cheap. I'll have to keep an eye out for the system to come along, so I can give it a test run before buying. At the moment I'm still enjoying my PS1 compilation, and I still have the option for Intellivision Lives for my Xbox, which has double the games. There's also the Flashback system, but if I'm buying a whole system I rather it be the real thing ;). Thanks for this video, was enjoyable. Thx

I really enjoy the people in the Intellivision community. Some of the purest retro fans I have encountered with great attitudes. I have a nice looking Tele-Games Intellivision on it's way this week as a restore project for myself. Great video! But definitely, the first master system is my favorite one. Plus those controllers on the II are horrible. I actually like the original INTV controllers. I have no issues with them like most people do.

True, but wow I loved looking at that sleek back and silver wedge! I still love the design of it and the Xl computer line too. I never understood the “large” criticism- then or now. I was like: what? Does any real gamer care about the size? I remember reading in a games magazine back in the day that it might be more appealing to parents to have a small console lol! Mine as hooked up to the rec room tv so no issues there! Even today, they’ll go: it’s a smaller revision of the PlayStation! I think: … is… that a problem??

The controllers were...a mixed bag. As a kid, I'd end up getting blisters on my thumb from the raised ridge around the control disc. Also the membrane innards were horrible and the disc would eventually destroy it. And those fire buttons, they got less responsive over time. Good memories, but honestly, the controllers were terrible in retrospect.

I had a 5200. People give those controllers hell but it didn’t bother me after the first 30 min! Nor my buddy with a 5200. Like all good gamers you adjust fast. I doubt the intellivsion maddening - I still can’t play with a d pad… and those rock hard recessed fire buttons!!! Ack! I didn’t like coleco’s controller either. Still I can now appreciate all the systems! Astrocades stubby stick was not great shakes either! Oddly… the venerable and timeless 2600 joystick was probably the best stock controller of all of them. Still I can appreciate all the systems, each was so unique.

There was also a Sears Super Video Arcade that played Intellivision games, they just changed the top half and added removable controllers, it was basically the Intellivision with controllers that un plugged and it would remove the Mattel copyright text but still played all Intellivision games and the great thing about it's controllers is they work on the Intellivision 2. There was also a Radio Shack version called Tandy Vision. INTV made the INTV3 and a Sports version that looked slightly different and came packed with Football or maybe Football and Baseball I got 2 Super Video Arcades on E bay but sadly they both died after awhile but I kept the controllers and actually was able the get 2 extra Sears Super Video Arcade controllers and use them on my INTV2 . The Sears Version was the Best because of the removable controllers.

I wish you did unplug those controllers from the intv 2 so we could see wich plug it is and am also curious if you could connect a genesis or atari controller to it, Also i wish you put both the first and zecond model of them next to eachother sothat we could clearly see the difference in size, Altrough it’s a big bummer that the 2nd model cannot play all of it’s games,but it just looks more sleecker and more modern,the first model just looks and is more dignified in design and the use of it.

Great video! I opted for the 1 myself. I considered a 2, especially after seeing that there's a simple mod allowing the use of Coleco games that aren't natively compatible, but ended up deciding against it largely because of the controllers, it being more expensive, the mod being a bit sketchy, and the fact that I got a good deal on my 1. I'd be curious to pick up a 2 or Super Video Arcade sometime, though, especially to see if the former'd let me play Demon Attack without getting hand cramps (the only game I have that does so) due to the different buttons.
@BriansManCave

thanks! Ya I agree with you on that. The original system has thinner controllers that don't cause as much hand crampage!
@carljr17

Definitely Intellivision I, because the controllers are much better. By the way, the Intellivision II was purposely made to not work with Coleco games, which had invalid "date" fields (they used 0, instead of something like 81). No joke.

Nice comparison/contrast video Brian! Personally I went for the Mattel IntelliVision 2. I was attracted to the detachable controllers. It has some other advantages like being able to use the IntelliVision System Changer to play Atari VCS/2600 games built in. The Mattel IntelliVision 1 can too, but it requires modification. Unfortunately the lockout on five Coleco games is a drawback. Though as you mention elsewhere I have heard many claims of being able to defeat/disable it. In retrospect if I knew the IntelliVision home video game console line better before I began shopping I would have likely sprung for an INTV 3, or Sears Super Video Arcade instead. They have all the advantages of both without any of the drawbacks. Well the INTV 3 does a still have hard wired controllers. I don't think you mention it, but thw whole reason the Mattel IntelliVision 2 was released was because Mattel was attempting to make the IntelliVision home video game console line more competitive. The Mattel IntelliVision 1 was pretty expensive at around $300.00. The Mattel IntelliVision 2 was made much more basic so it would be more affordable. Also yes the IntelliVision 3 was released. The one being developed as a new model by Mattel was canceled as they were exiting the market. The IntelliVision 3 was released under INTV Corp., and is roughly analogous to a Mattel IntelliVision 1.

The downfall to the intellivision 2 is it doesn't play all the games made for it like donkey kong although you can switch controllers with the 2 I prefer model 1 didn't pay 5 bucks but still got a pretty good deal as for the rf plug all you have to do to switch is change channels no one uses 3 or 4
