Thanks for almost 30K views in 3 weeks, your likes, and comments 🙌! But I was WRONG 😳. Google Fonts updated Inter to Version 4 right when I released the video. This brings some problems. I released an update how to fix them here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/wI14rX2Yi6mKl20.

It's basically 'the' closest alternative to Apple's San Francisco. Just love the font.

Agreed, Walton. And since San Francisco is only available on Apple devices, Inter is a good, free cross platform alternative.

Condensed and expanded variants (or better, variable widths!) could make this a true SF Pro alternative. And maybe one day Inter Serif? 😂

NO WAY that’s awesome. I have a special place in my heart for Cantarell but Gnome could definitely use an update to it especially with how clean the rest of the design is.

The optical sizing is huge! I’ve always thought Inter was too far apart at bigger sizes. Also, what a coincidence. I noticed a difference when working on a client’s card design using Inter today. I wasn’t aware of an update until this video.

Thank you!! Well, the thing is Google Fonts shows the new version now (it was updated shortly after I made the video). However, it always takes a few months until Figma updates. So you probably still see the previous version 3.0 in Figma. To get version 4 you’ll need to install it locally. Then you should have the options available.

While I love Inter for web design, I doubt I'll be using the large type variant. When using large type, I go straight to a more pronounced display font. It's an easy way to keep the visual brand identity recognisable and consistent. I may consider using some Inter glyph alternates in body copy on very specific projects. Consider a UI project with a limited scope for a brand that already has a full fledged visual identity, suited to social media and print. Maybe the body text is in a serif font of a font that isn't ideal in the context of a UI. In that case, Inter would be one of my go to fonts to try to replace the body font with for this project. Turning on a few alternates could make the font work better with the existing identity. Such as the lowercase "a" that visually looks like "O|" instead of "3|".

Very hipster of you to tell people to avoid fonts just because they are popular. Also, editing comment, it would be nice if you showed examples and difference on screen for longer to give people more time to digest these sometimes subtle difference. You can do fade effects between them or put them above and below each other or side by side. But I have to pause your video every time to get a better grip of what you are trying to highlight.

I hate this UI design font trend! like what is the point of it? It made sense when our screens were low quality, but now all our screens are super high definition and can totally display fine details. Isn't it funny that Apple change ios from Helvetica after keeping it through their low quality screen phase and changed it to the new font when they have better screens? To see the the problem with this soulless UI fonts is just go outside and take a walk around your city. Many designers are using these fonts in print design as well and all the signs/logos/posters / typography are bland and soulless. I feel sorry for good design.
@stefanalecu9532

So you have no real critique of Inter because apparently fonts like it were only useful when screens were as tall as your index? Sorry to break it to you, but you aren't reading articles at 72px, but 12px, so you definitely have to be legible even at small sizes.
@arunashamal
Ай бұрын
@@stefanalecu9532 critique of inter is the overall critique of UI fonts that are popping up everywhere and ruining aesthetics online and offline.. Today's screens are perfectly capable of displaying traditional fonts at 12px...When I was studying graphic design the rule was never to use serif for screen because it is hard to read...well...today go to popular sites like Washington Post, NYT, The CUT, they all use small serif fonts for reading text and they are perfectly readable, even on mobile phones. Ironically the chase for UI font is an outdated concept.
