I'm assuming the panel grows/shrinks more lengthwise than width, but you see it in the width. So how about fasteners with a built in washer head installed over oversized hole, maybe an oval hole?? Each panel can move independently but still held in place or integrate this line of thinking into the retention clip???

We are in the process of building a barn and just noticed the horrible look of the barn with all the waviness. We asked the owners of the company to come and look at it, and I was horrified when we were basically told there was nothing we can do. We are incorporating the barn into the outside living part of our home, and I am devastated. We can't move the barn or the house (septic and water and electrical already in)---and we now get to look at the side of a barn that looks like a million soft balls were thrown into the side of it.

when the roof decking is uneven, you need to make adapted homemade clips and make sure the metal isnt prying, it may result in some parts having 1/4 free between the metal and the decking, it is not a problem because like you said, metal works with temperature and it needs space the clip is easy to make, by cutting pieces of scraps and folding litle locks on it, and hitting it over the decking, puting your fold where it needs to be for the metal not to pry the clips will have a different height following the decking if its uneven, but the metal panel will stay straight without oil canning

the same happens with exterior vinyls, some workers put them too tight and theres no space for it to expand and contract, so the screws pop out or the vynil breaks, tin roofs dont break, it makes oil canning

I have installed snap lock metal roof and have minor oil canning though out the installation. My concern is on the eves where major oil canning is on the first panel where it is srewed every 12" on the edge with z strip to hold eve flashing

When you attached the top panel to the deck you cause stress at the top. Likewise z closures attached at top to the decking does the same thing. Like how can the panel contract and expand if you are holding down either end of the panel? One soulution is have furring strips. This keeps the panel from heating up because of the ventilation underneath. Plus you are securing the z closures on the metal panel and not the decking. The panels should be able to float. Engineering makes it possible to keep the panels from flying off.

Covers straitration, backer rods. Funny how many don't. Some just spend 90% of the time emphasizing making sure the contract states that the installer cannot be sued.

In my experience oil canning on a true substrate with a true panel, then its from the The hot and cold swings (here it can change 60 degrees in a few hrs). Morning no oil canning, noon in the summer a lot. Sheffield color card mentions oil canning, I like seeing that. That way its easier to explain to my customers. You cant stop it on a flat panel.

You're absolutely right - expansion and contraction plays a big role in showing oil canning. Communication with customers is definitely key! -Thad

Use floating clips for half the panel length.

what is the best color for metal roofs in Florida? I hear the roof will fade, is there a better color such as lighter as opposed to darker?

Is oil canning less pronounced on thicker gauges? Ie 24 instead of 26?
@mountainbikerdave

Good question, I was wondering that too.

Oil canning will be less pronounced on thicker gauges, but it's still an inherent characteristic. We installed some different assemblies in this video, and the 24 gauge we used showed plenty of oil canning: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1KB6tHadjZaWdaQ Goes to show that structure in the panel and a flat roof deck are still the best ways to minimize oil canning even with thicker gauge metal. Thanks for the question! -Thad

@@TheMetalRoofingChannel Can you install these panels on a batten roof or does it have to be a decking roof?

Im not bothered by oil canning it has a nice rustic look to it. The europeans often prefer oil canning

Neat. I'm getting a 26 gauge standing seam roof in a month. The guy mentioned getting striated panels to hide the appearance of this. I didn't know it was a thing. Thanks for the little education lesson!

We prefer the look of a flat smooth standing seam roof panels. We are concerned with oil canning. What type of structure is the least noticeable? What type of structure is the closest to the look of flat smooth? Thank you!
@luctremblay7901

least noticeable oil canning on a tin roof would be more panels, more joints and less space between the joints, thicker sheetmetal gauge, and clips need to be made on measure where the decking is uneven

My wife and I are of the same preference. We want a clean modern look. We're looking into 22g panels if we go full flat, and 24g panels if we go with 2 very minimal ribs down the middle of the panel. Do not go with 26g or higher. Oil canning is much more likely with the thinner gauges.
