Interesting Facts About Prehistoric Animals || What happened to the greatest Ape Gigantopithecus .
In 1935, paleontologist Ralph von Koenigswald wandered around medicine shops in Hong Kong. He was searching for "dragon teeth," a term used to refer to fossilized animal teeth that were utilized in traditional Chinese medicine. A molar that von Koenigswald had never seen previously was discovered during one of these trips. The tooth resembled an ape's, being broad and flat, yet it was much larger than any known tooth from any known animal, extinct or alive.
Eventually he determined that these teeth were of an enormous primate,Von Koenigswald gave the new species the name Gigantopithecus, which means "giant ape." Following this first finding, other teeth were discovered in various pharmacies, and eventually several fossilized jawbones were discovered in a Chinese cave. Then thousands of more teeth and more jaws have been discovered. However, no further body parts of the enormous ape have ever been found.
The measurements of the fossil teeth allowed paleontologists to estimate the primate’s height for about 10 feet tall and weighs between 200 to 300kilograms . These Such calculations point that the Gigantopithecus blacki as being the largest hominid yet known.
Even though we only have a small portion of its anatomy to analyze, we've learned a lot about Gigantopithecus just from its teeth and jaws. In the beginning, there were three species of this huge ape, the oldest of which dates back almost 9 million years, to the Miocene epoch. However, the most recent and by far the largest among those was Gigantopithecus blacki. It existed between 2 million and 100 thousand years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, in what currently southern China and Vietnam.
