I bought the Sapphire sandwich, 1863. Just a matter of taste. Is it a rolex? No. Is it a watch that's gonna shock people and draw constant attention? Nope. Is it gorgeous and classic, and will it attract eyes of people that know watches? Absolutely. And conversations among those who know what it is are the most meaningful. Absolutely love it.

A very refreshing look at the moon watch, the bracelet thing is really weird in a good way. The way I see it is that you can have a good looking bracelet for longer, because when the outer side gets scratched so bad you can't look at it anymore, you just flip it and have a new one 😄

I've actually got a copy of a Speedmaster I bought for £10 about 8 years ago. I obviously knew it was a copy. I work in a shop and you'd be surprised how many customers I get at work saying "Wow you got a real Speedmaster!" Main difference is the second hand is the big second hand for the chronometer and not the smaller dial. It does sweep though. Unless they took a good close look, people can't really tell the difference. I always admit it's a copy. I'm hardly gonna wear an expensive watch to work where it could easily get broken!! But after 8 years it's still going super strong...despite it being cheap works inside it. I am going to treat myself to the real thing soon. Just gotta find a place to hide it from the wife!

I think the term, luxury, is subjective. The MOTM is as beautiful a watch as it is a rugged adventurer. The beauty of it is clearly its age defiance via design, aura and charm. The Speedmaster takes with it a sense of atmosphere where ever it goes. A purpose built sports watch, with the confidence of a wonderful history and history is as significant to luxury as materials, design and engineering expertise. So I think as luxury watches go the Speedmaster offers timeless design, beautiful finishing, robustness and a history of considerable weight. I think these are luxuries.

This was actually the first mechanical watch I ever purchased. However recently I found out about the Strela 3017 and picked it up soon after. It is basically the Soviet equivalent to the Speedmaster and it was actually the first watch to ever be worn on a space walk. The size was also more fitting to me, I liked the fact that it was a vintage piece and just a fraction of the price of the Speedmaster. So now I actually decided to let my Speedy go.. Just felt like letting people know about this watch because it's a really cool alternative to the Speedmaster, especially concidering the price around 500$.

Good that you mentioned the fact that you're not getting rolex or high end finish and quality. I have to be honest in saying I was a bit disappointed when I got my speedmaster after having owned a rolex, the difference being in terms of feel. Although I love the look of my speedy, I mostly go back to my rolex just because of the weight and feel. There's something special about that 904L steel that in comparison makes wearing my speedy feel like a tin made toy.

BTW, despite I've owned my .861 model 1969 Speedmaster, I was amazed that David Scott's Bulova was sold at auction for 1.625 million. See Bulova insert for the "replica" version of the Watch. Since it was the only other watch to have been worn on the moon, I had to buy one. So as soon a Bulova made the "replica" version of the watch, I bought one from a local jewler for about $375 plus tax. The price has come down since the first came out. The Bulova is larger than the Speedmaster, I believe is a little too large. However its 262 kHz timing crystal is absolutely accurate to about a second a month and maybe much more. I've sychronized the Bulova David Scott replica to my Iphone to the second. The Iphone, and most other smartphones with GPS use atomic time from Satellites to give the most accurate time you can get for cheap. The accuracy of the Bulova is outstanding. I've never taken my Speedmaster into the water since 49 years of ownership. The Bulova is not a problem, I think it's certified for 100 m, maybe more. On Omega's website, they say the Speedmaster is water resistant to 50 m. I don't know if that applies only to the newer Speedmasters, or also to the 1960's version. Either way, I can replace the Bulova, but not the Speedmaster. It's too expensive. Also, I believe Omega is incorrect. On their website, ( Q&A section) they state the first watch on the moon had a 1861 movement. I don't believe the 1861 came out until years later. I believe they meant to say the .861 movement. Omega should correct this unless I'm wrong and they're right. Can anybody confirm when the 1861 came out? The only difference between the two is the Rhodium plating on some internal parts on the 1861, and maybe a small nylon piece included as well. Thanks in advance.

Bruce, have you ever let the chronograph running for at least an hour? I have noticed that my speedy basically changes completely to mark the hour about 8 minutes before. So at 52 minutes, basically the one hour marker on the 12 hour subdial is completely covered by the little hand. is this normal or should it be closer to 59 minutes? Sorry about asking that here, but I don't know who else to ask. :-)

You are spot on there Bruce. I liked everything about the watch until it was handed to me at the AD. To be very honest it felt cheap in the hand, also I was shocked at how light it was. It's hard to explain but it felt quality wise like a lower end seiko. It looked real nice even in my hand, but I did not like the "feel" of it. I own a omega seamaster 300m diver, and the difference is night and day! Even my sub c does not feel that much better than my seamaster 300m. But the speedmaster I felt was a disappointment from omega!! Just my two cents worth. All the best guys.

There are so many reasons why nasa chose it, that too after several series of test and research. And Hesalite crystal dont break into small pieces like sapphire. You dont have to be condescending about it. It could inexpensive compared to others but more safe to take it to the moon than others. I dont know any rolex went out of the stratosphere or even toposphere. Rolex could be good for oceans (sea dweller) but omega kicks it out when it come to space.

It’s a benchmark watch, it’s an icon, it’s a sport/tool/luxury timepiece. It’s a grail for some guys. It’s a must for many collectors. It can be your one watch for life. It’s affordable, not cheap, but obtainable for most budgets. You get one hell of a value. It’s luxury but not high end. However, it can keep up with the likes of a Patek Philippe. Multi million watch collectors will give you a nod of approval when you wear it. It’s arguably the most versatile watch you can own. Perfect for all occasions even at different men’s sartorial styles. The only drawback is the water resistance, and not COSC, but who goes swimming with a chrono? Not COSC but it gets the job done and could be at COSC specifications once regulated. MANY people claim that EVERYONE has a Speedy. Not true, I live in Chicago an International city, and I don’t see many Speedies in the wild.

Half the beauty of the watch is his pedigree and the history (success) behind this model. A 1966/ 1968 speedmaster in good shape is one of the most sought out watches in the world. you are right that there are tons of nicer and more flashy models on the street, true thing, but the true connoisuour would kill for a good shape old Speedy.

I have to disagree a bit. Maybe it's the way the hesalite left you feeling? I picked up the sapphire sandwich version with the slightly more decorated cal.1863 and exhibition back as my first informed watch purchase and couldn't be happier. I realize this deviates from the strict moonwatch version but I knew I needed the tougher glass and I HAD to be able to see that classic, iconic Lemania-based movement. It's one of the most legible watches on the planet, looks incredible on that bracelet, and is an absolute strap monster. It's built like a tank and personally I'd take that pedigree over a precious metal Daytona any day.

Some guys really need the sapphire. Not to say careless but for those who are on the move, yes. I should of went for a sapphire but I have plenty of Polywatch. First I agree with what you said, I'd go or the sandwich . And heard from others, always buy on bracelet, and then get a strap, and it doesn't have to be an Omega strap, which is expensive, to get an Omega bracelet for this watch is like $850; we[[ worth getting that over the strap for $100 more.

What I love most about the Speedy is that the design is a genuine classic that looks amazing through the changing lens of fashion throuought the decades. It looks as awesome today as it did in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's, 20's. A truly timeless design. I had to wait until I was 50 before I could afford to buy a second hand one - I just wish I could have had it for my whole life, complete with the dings and scratches that tell a story. I hope my son will get to do that when it's his turn to own it.

I'd scratch up that high dome acrylic in about a day. Regarding the bracelet of course the Swiss are sourcing their parts from China. More than just the bracelets. The Swiss (and Germans and others) sold CNC machines all over the planet. Under their own laws all the Swiss have to do is case up a watch within Switzerland made of mostly foreign parts (only the movement is required to have 60% Swiss made "value" of parts) and voila it's still "Swiss Made." The bracelet, case, crystal, etc don't have to be Swiss at all. Your Ginault is probably more American made than the Swiss made watches are nowadays.

Yeah, I bought it pre owned and it already had some nice scratches in it. The sapphire sandwich didn't appeal to me because of the smokey reflections around the perimeter. I'm sure I'll scratch it up good and end up buffing them out or replacing the crystal

if you want an extremely accurate tool watch that has awsome price/performance ratio buy a $100 G-Shock 5610.. If you buy a speedmaster who cares what time it is or how accurate it is? i wonder how someone could be 'disappointed' with the speedy because of the other things you said. it is a piece of jewelry. the entire watch, not just the bracelet. it dresses up very very nicely on the black leather strap. even though it is a 'tool watch' it looks much more elegant with the hesalite glass, the case shape and the sharp contrast of the polished and brushed surfaces and cool angles. i do have a rolex and i dont think at all that the speedy feels of lesser value held in hand. if anything i am amazed that it can be had brand new for less than half the price of my rolex. it's also a piece of history associated the moon landing and it is still given to astronauts by nasa today. i love the version that you (and i) have because of the handwinding lemania movement. you have to interact with the watch on a daily basis which gives me a more special connection to the speedy than to my automatics or quarzes (although the handwinding is a bit hindered by the chrono pushers) . I am sure you are not bashing it and just wanted to point out some details of the speedy but really anyone who buys this watch because he wants a high end swiss made example of accurate time keeping really didnt get what the speedmaster is about.

Outdated technology, outdated looks, outdated bracelet, not haute horology... would I buy the Moonwatch if I had to do it again?? ABSOLUTELY.

I love the Speedmaster racing with the master Chronometer movement. I prefer the automatic movement, sapphire crystal, and latest technology under the hood. I think having to wind the moon watch every day would annoy me. Great video

the one u are reviewing it's a 1861 , it's priced at 4.800 euros. it's a quality watch and u have no idea of what a huge lie u just tell. the quality' it's rolex level , the finishing it's much better than rolex . the movement it's the n 1 ever and it's the only watch that doubles the price every 5 years. u dont know much about it. as today there is no better investment that buying a moonwatch for around 4k. in 5 years from now will wort 8 and please if u unswer this comment do the homework before. ciao.

Really didn't know much about the Speedie, didn't know the movement is that "dated" so to say. Still want to handle one in person, just to see that unique profile. But in the end, I'm a sucker for all things modern, high-tech, and the new Aqua Terra Master Chronometer is right up my alley.

Definitely go check one out but temper your expectations. The new ATs look so great! Definitely some great tech and innovation at work

I dream of owning one but the thought of “made in china” components really threw me off. It feels like they’re screwing us over.

I do not believe that the Classic Speedmaster is a luxury watch. It is an iconic utilitarian watch. Its beauty and appeal is rooted in its core heritage.

Its an excellent tool watch, very tough. Don't forget it survived the rigors of a Saturn V launch.

Low beat frequency...Why does that matter? JLC, AP and others use low beat movements in their most famous watches. It's really not a big deal to anyone but Seiko and Zenith.

Thanks for the review. Didn’t know the bracelet was reversible and the omega emblem at center. The only odd view was the moonwatch with the buffalo wings.

Yeah I threw that in to try to emphasize the point I was talking about. That is more of a tool watch as opposed to a luxury piece. Not afraid to get it a little dirty haha

My initial thoughts about the Speedy are the opposite of yours. I found everything about it to just click: fit, finish, size, movement. I really do prefer this over more modern watches. You are right: it is a vintage watch produced new, but that is what I love about it.

There is a definite draw to it. I hope I didn't come across as too critical as I love the watch. Its just different than its similarly priced counterparts

I think you were clear on that Honestly, I wouldn't buy this watch for the prices you quoted. However, you can pick up this watch new for around $3000-3500 on the grey market and for that price it represents extreme value. I look forward to your follow-ups.

Pretty sure it's not a 5 link bracelet. It's a 3 link bracelet. Just has some extra finishing on the ends of the center link. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Really well done - with all due respect if someone is disappointed with hesalite they probably don't understand why it's still there. Same with the aluminum over ceramic. I understand the criticism though. Imo the speedy is a stronger watch than any Rolex for the same price. Omega also wants your business.

Thanks ,Bruce. I got myself a FOIS as it's a little better on my 6.5" wrist than the professional. I was trying on a few Grand Seiko at the same time and there's no comparison. The GS watches beat it hands down in terms of quality, especially when you get a loupe out. But I still bought the speedmaster. I guess I just bought into the whole iconic thing and it had been a grail for so long. I'll get a GS at some point though. Having said that, I did get a SLA017, so I guess that's kind of GS territory.

Omega should watch this video! Yets it's an icon, a true style icon. One recognizes the design from "miles away" But IMHO it's overpriced for what it is. 5K for a manual wound choronograph (nothing wrong with that config) with the same technique as used in the watches of the late 50s ... is a little steep. But if you're Omega, you can ask that price. It would be interesting to see a comparison with the - Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch - Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph (311.30.44.51.01.002) - Fortis Offcial Cosmonaut Chronograph (638.10.11) Let's call it a space race :-D Great work Bruce!
