Hello! I recently changed from Grishko to Gaynor and my pointe shoes really feels tight. When I tried them on at the ballet store they fitted well but after sewing them it just got tighter. I searched online but since my pointe shoes didnt have to break idk really know what to do. Maybe I could get some of your advice. Btw ive been following your tips ever since i started doing pointes, and it really helped my ankles

Hi Kathryn! I just want to tell you how proud I am of you for going back to ballet after a several-year setback in your adult years, when things ideally would have gone smoothly but instead bestowed you with perspective and wisdom. I had a nine-year illness that I thought would never end, and now I’m well and back to a better life than I could have imagined even before the illness. I appreciate that you are finding purpose and meaning in your unconventional journey, and that you’re living your best life and sharing it with us just by being yourself. Thank you so much. Always cheering for you! Take care.

You seemed to have re-discovered a new vigor, excitement, and passion for ballet. What a euphoria: bask in it, as you’ve built the platform to do so for as long as you wish no matter what happens professional and no matter the duration of time. How strong you are: physically & mentally: constantly re-creating yourself and making gorgeous outcomes of otherwise tragic situations. I pray to be strong as you are. So much respect. You’ve given me hope in general & inspiration with your videos (re: my hypothyroidism during this time in my life regarding change as well.) God Bless, prayers, and love sent to you in the meantime. I had a technique question for any experienced dancers dealing with hyper extended knees/legs. When we're in first position, do I keep my legs hyper extended, with the heels apart, or do I keep my heels together in first, even if it means my legs aren't fully straightened? Thanks!
@arielburrow9433

It depends on your teacher! Mine now says I should keep my legs fully straight but my old teacher preferred my legs bent
@Monocultured01

I also have hyperextended legs and none of my teachers have ever mentioned my heels not touching together. As long as your legs are straight and your knees are together, it's not a big deal to most teachers.

So, um, when I learned pointe, over twenty years ago, I wasn’t taught to roll through my feet. I ways taught more to “spring” or “snatch”. I sure got up onto pointe but my feet and ankles were super weak. I rolled my ankles a ton and had a horrible sprain that I never recovered from and stopped dancing all together. I really miss ballet and pointe and would love to pick it up again. Do you think I could learn pointe the correct way and have stronger ankles?
@esstown
5 жыл бұрын
The first way you learned it was not incorrect. Both methods are important. The first, method, rolling through, is primarily a strengthening exercise, although it may also be used in choreography. The roll through must be learned first, in order to develop necessary strength. The second method, springing, is the standard for one-foot releve, especially in Russian technique and especially when turns are involved, in order to avoid shifting one's centre of balance (see Kathryn Morgan's fouette en pointe video where she addresses this by referring to it as "almost" pulling your toe under you. Kids can learn it first by jumping onto pointe, later it is to smooth out into a partial or imperceptible "jump"). Your particular problem of rolling ankles sounds like weak eversion muscles and maybe some sickling as the cause. Strict attention to technique as well as some exercises where you wing your feet against resistance (with a theraband) should be useful for this, as well as physiotherapy to deal with the delayed recovery from the sprain (likely needs ultrasound and/or laser, deep friction rubs and active tissue release). Anyone can learn pointe the correct way and strengthen their ankles - do go for it!

I'm currently struggling with my technique, nothing depends on it since ballett is only my hobby, but it still sucks. I find it hard not to sit on my hip, also turning out the back leg (plies in 4th/5th) and releves on one leg in pointe shoes. On top of that I'm stuck with my splits. I did classes on my own during winter break but still everything has gotten worse.

Dearest Kathryn, This is a great class to use. Thankyou so much for your knowledge and humane approach to teaching. I do have one question though; The 'Torture combination' when on one leg I notice that you allow your hips to tilt from side to side and that you are off your center line on the standing leg therfore using your arms on the barre so to speak. Is this intentenional or, should one keep the hips square and the vertical line with weight directly over the standing leg on point? I would imagine that this would force one to work harder with full weight over the standing toe so to speak.

Was just thinking - I know you love the Suffolk pointe shoes now, but to me your foot looked better in the ?Bloch Euro-stretch (Worn in the beginner pointe video). The slight bit of knuckling you were getting in that video was just enough to nicely compliment the line of your arch. Of course it's not about appearance, it's mainly about how you can work in a shoe. Could also be a matter of where you were in the breaking in, however, in the beginner pointe video the shoes appeared quite new.

Easy fix: Do them for a few days at the barre but keep your hands an inch above the barre without actually touching it. After getting used to that, put one hand in 2nd. Then do both hands in 2nd, still facing barre. After you get used to that try in the centre - it will work as if by magic!
