Very tight group and a very interesting arrangement of a Kenton classic.

Well, I don't agree with every choice made in this performance, but I love the fact they harmonized Fontana's classic 1956 solo for a full band soli.....and the band is crammed with a lot of top notch dudes (and at least one dudette)!

Be honest. What single person could copy Carl? Notice they left the high parts to the trumpets. No one could touch Fontana.

Had that number in our "Big Band" library when I played in an American Legion dance band decades ago - As I remember there were no major chords in the entire arrangement.

I'm really surprised this band got away with calling themselves that because Kenton explicitly said in his will that no band would ever be permitted to use his name and that no Kenton "ghost" band would be permitted to exist.

Hi Kevin.....the SKLO has been around for almost 25 years and does have permission to exist. We have 7 albums out on Summit Records....

AND on top of that, it is NOT a "Ghost band." Kenton explicity said he didn't want a GHOST band. This is a legacy orchestra. Different. AND Mike V. did get permission to do this. And it has been around a long time. It features many of Kenton's old and older people as well. And of course, they are doing the name very proud.

@@randytivens9244 I don't know about the difference between Ghost & Legacy, but the Estate would get involved if there was unauthorized use of Kenton's name. Kenton was way ahead of his time, but the many of the recordings were lower fidelity. It's great to hear updated sound and extended arrangements.

No, no, no! First the piano solo at the start is just ....well....a bit lame.....then the solo sax....well also a bit lame and then the bass solo. There is no bass solo in the original version by Kenton! And what happened to the triobone solo? And the drummer doesn't hit the breaks aa he ahould! Come on guys! Just listen to the original! And there is no trumpet scream art the end.

Not sure what you think you know about the Kenton Orchestra, Garen. Whether you like the solos or not is your personal opinion, but you sure don't know the history of the band. First of all, Carl Fontana's trombone solo from Kenton in HiFi is voiced out for the whole band right in the middle of the arrangement. And yes, there is a bass solo on MANY recordings that Stan did of this tune. There has been a high note trumpet solo on the shout chorus since the 1960's. I played it every night in the early 70's and it is on many recordings, including a well known video from the European Tour in 1972 on U tube. Get your facts straight please, if you are going to put down the band.

I have to agree with you. Piano solo was too weird for this style. But, my biggest disappointment was with the pitch and intonation of the ensemble. A lot of the sax and trombone sections chords were just out of tune, like they can't hear where their notes fit into the orchestration. Or they just didn't even bother to tune before they performed. High school bands literally play more in tune than this. Are there guys still touring? Damn I hope not.
