I am in my late 50s and have been doing IF since 2017. It is absolutely do-able and sustainable if done right, there will be no hunger pangs. It is about eating well at the same time. Energy levels, mental clarity and muscle mass will not be affected.
@limwowo5902
3 жыл бұрын
last sentence, that's quite stupid. muscle mass will not get affected because you are not to the extent of malnourishment. fats go first in dieting. only when you are malnourished where your fats (long term energy storage) and carbs (short term energy storage) have depleted, your muscle mass will decrease. which is why long dist runners are so skinny because they use up all energy sources during their training. normal people won't lose muscle mass that quickly. i lost 3 kg without dieting and in fact, i was eating 3000 calories a day (i am 44kg,1.57). my secret? just find a sport that you like and i swear you can be healthy and happy. running, swimming, tennis, whatever. with intermittent fasting and no exercise you'll just get more skinny but not more muscular. with sports, you will get a nice body, nice tan, healthy life, endorphins.

@@Steven.Chia.Singapore It really will be easier if you replace sugar with good quality fats like avocado. Add a half avocado, sliced and well salted to your lunch and you will not be hungry until dinner. If you are doing this now for your own health instead of for a TV report, do your research on IF. There are tons of youtube videos by actual practicing medical doctors that explain IF and how important it is to cut insulin levels by reducing carbs. Insulin is the hormone that tells your cells to store sugar, and while it is high your body cannot use up any of your fat. It takes 12 hours after eating sugar for your body to drop blood sugar and insulin levels far enough for your body to even consider using stored fat. When you are eating sugar you cannot trust your body -- it runs out of the quick glucose fuel and screams that you are hungry. If eating fat instead of sugar, it will burn that fat for fuel and instead of screaming it is hungry, you will feel hungry for half an hour and then the body shrug and stat buring your stored fat when it doesn't get more food. Watch Dr. Berg, Dr. Berry, Dr. Nadir Ali, Ivor Cummins, and Dr.Ekberg. The first expert you visited talking about the glycogen storage in the liver and the fat stored everywhere else was the most accurate in your original video. The others were repeating disproven theories. Look up "autophagy" -- the 2016 Nobel prize for medicine was awarded to the researcher that explained it. The point of IF is to trigger autophagy, which is not simply burning fat for fuel as in ketosis, but having your cells scavenge the weak and damaged cells for building blocks to replace them. In ten days doing IF while stuffing myself on meat, fat, and salads -- even fried foods cooked in good saturated oils -- I easily go 18 hours without being hungry and have lost 7kg in those first ten days. Lunch today was two eggs scrambled with cheese, half an avocado and 6 asparagus wrapped in 3 thick bacon strips. I was stuffed. Dinner was 6 hours ago and was a big bowl of jambalaya I made with chicken, smoked sausage, ribeye steak (almost a 500g of meat in the bowl) , bell peppers, onion, celery, parsley and seasonings. No sugar, no rice, no bread, and yet I won't be hungry for another 12 hours -- for 18hours total IF time. I used to a huge amount of calories from juices and cokes, and now it is only coffee, tea, and lemon water and yet I don't miss the sugar -- it took less than a week to lose the craving for it. I am 56yrs old, so someone as young as you can do it.

Its easier if you do IF gradually and focus on having low-carb, high fat diet. Initially, I started off with having one cheat day a week then moved on to having one cheat meal. I gradually increased my fasting hours as well after I plateaued. Don't weigh everyday! It helped me lose 13 kgs over 10 months period (2 months I plateaued). I realized not to seek fast results. I would recommend to try it for at least 3 months to see results and feel better not just 1-2 weeks or a month. It helped me both physically and mentally.
@wilsont1010

Yes, this is true, as one has to be fat adapted first. But not all fats are the same, because the body will metabolize long chain and medium chain fatty acids entirely differently. Cutting down on carbs and increasing more fat for a few weeks can help to stop the craving for food. If one is not too overweight a low carb high fat diet is quite good enough for weight loss.

The whole point of intermittent fasting is not aiming to eat less calories but really the same amount of food calorifically speaking. The use of IF is that when you are not taking food, your insulin will tend to reduce to a very low level. When you have high insulin, your body cannot burn fats, the pathway for fat burning turns off (it is called PPAR-alpha), hence keeping insulin low is an excellent way to lose fats. Fasting also causes potentially your body to go into what is know as autophagy where you body will go into a mode to start cleaning out old cells and harvest the broken down proteins to create new and, for a lack of a better word, stronger cells in the long run. I am on keto diet for over a year now (and lost 18kg and counting because of that) and because I am able to run off fat/ketones, I can achieve IF of over 20 hours. You don't have to do keto (it is a very unforgiving diet at times) to get benefits from IF, just stop snacking. I dare say the worst advice from traditional nutrition is to have "small meals often throughout the day", completely wrong. Making things worse, ours typical nutrition meals are carbs+protein or carbs+fats laden typically (that is a 200% insulin spike). Go figure why most of the people cannot seem to lose the fats (note, I am not saying weight here, if you lose muscles, you are in trouble).
@wilsont1010

The "experts" who have been calling all calories are the same thoughout these years got it all wrong for too long. Have we always been told by the doctors that to have frequent but smaller meals when we seek their advice? This is another huge misinformation for many decades also. Even the food pyramid is just arbitrarily thought out by these experts but again how many generations more are they going to be harmed before they really start caring about peoples' health, I wonder?

While IF is effective for the most part if you're following through on a daily basis, you still need to watch what you eat during your regular meals especially carbohydrates and exercise like a 30 minutes walk will help as a start. Take your meals like you normally do in terms of portion and a good balance of animal fat, protein and lots of vegetables. Stay hydrated throughout the day and stay away from all sugary drinks and snacks. Check yourself out in 2-3 weeks, see the difference and you'll stay motivated.

Most of us already know that fat or fatty acid is the secret to losing weight but here is something eveyone ought to know but has always been left out in the discussions. Our body metabolise fat very differently for medium and long chain fatty acids, 80-90% of fats that we consume in our everyday meals are consist of long chain fatty acids, whereas for medium chain FA, they can be converted directly to ketones. This is why some fats are reputed for losing weight while not so for the others. On the other hand, if you are on Keto and you do not wish to lose too much weight you can choose to consume long chain FA like VOO.

@@Steven.Chia.Singapore You should post weekly updates on your journey to a healthier diet and IF on it. People will trust your info more when they see you are not being influenced by media companies, big food companies and doctors that only prescribe medications instead of addressing the diet issues. Think about our history -- through the last 50k yrs of ice age, people could not eat many plants; before agriculture was invented 10k yrs ago, it would not have been possible to harvest enough from wild plants. Certainly no sugary fruits. Plants only ripened a month out of the year, so it doesn't make sense that we would have evolved to have sugars or grains as a significant part of our diet. It was mostly hunt something down and eat it, an all day or several days long task, and then a single large meal, sometimes fasting for several days in between. Feasting on fruits only to fatten up for the winter. Yet we thrived or we wouldn't be here today. Fasting is not a new fad. It is part of our evolutionary design that we muck up by eating constantly and including carbs in our meals.

Great to see this post video after the previous IF episode. Most toxics in our body are "oil based" or says "non-water soluble". As such, these toxics cannot be carried out from body through sweat, urine or poo, and, stored in our body fats. During IF, as your body in the Ketosis state(mostly happen in the morning), fats will be burned and generated into energy, and, toxics will be burned too. You looks lethargic, felling cranky could be just due to the releasing of the toxics in your body, which is a way to clear these toxics. So, be gentle while practicing IF. Eventually, IF is a lifestyle, don't see it a magical weight loss method. p/s: I am not a doctor, please fact check.

Eating continuously means you are constantly providing your body with salts as well as sugar, if you are eating a typical Western style diet. If you don't supply fat as an alternative to sugar for fuel, you will by hungry. If you don't drink electrolytes while fasting you will be cranky -- just adding sodium (sea salt) and potassium (table salt alternative) to a jug of water to drink during the day is enough. Don't fast end up gastric long term illness. Eat moderate. Drink 1 cup of warm water b4 food to fill up stomach then eat fruits then eat your meal. U find you will eat lesser meal portion because too full already. Of cos must exercise or walk more.

this warm water idea is the REAL genius. I'm in Japan now and people drink hot tea all-the-time. If I drink a cup of warm tea when dinner starts I've noticed that I get full fast and don't eat nearly as much as normal even with my favorite foods. The same thing doesn't happen if I drink cold beers and sweet drinks. It's something about the warm fluid, I think.

For me I would say yes Intermittent Fasting worked. But only when I was in BMT. Because the food was horrible! That I could only eat fruit in dinner and sometimes even lunch. After POP and no need stay in, forget it. Food is too good.

During my BMT, they would station NCOs at the rubbish bins to take down the names of recruits who didn't finish their food. These recruits had higher chances of getting a weekend duty

Hello Steve, I just saw your youtube on intermittent fasting. I might have missed it, but it seems that the people whom you consulted did not explain why you put on weight. Most of them focused on what to eat and how to eat, which is, in its basic idea, correct. But they missed imparting the essential know how of why people gain weight, and the basic approach to lose weight. it you are interested in what I have to say, you can google my name and contact me. No charge. Free consultation for you, because what you are experiencing and had experienced is relevant to a lot of people.

What about doing a plant based diet(Vegan) for a month. See what happens. Take your blood work before and after.
@aliefr2984

Vegan is not that healthy, because it's forced diet due to 'animal morality', instead of health. If you want to sacrifice your life for random animal, then you can do vegan diet.

Vegan diets can work, but the trap I see is that many Vegans try to limit their fats because they've been told that calories in = calories out, and that a calorie is a calorie. These people usually fall off the wagon because they run into health issues like depression and mood swings caused by nutrient deficiencies. I'd recommend Dr. Sten Ekberg's KZitem channel, he's a good health communicator without being an extremist.

It is not about vegan, but insulin spike that causes weight gain and metabolism problem. Good fat increases metabolism and will not spike insulin. If you want to cut out 1 or 2 meals without the hunger or gastric problem, add fat into your diet. Also choose a fat that can be converted to ketones easily such as lauric acid.
