Greater Glasgow HOPE not Hate www.hopenothate... in association with the International Brigade Memorial Trust www.internation... held a Commemoration to the 65 Glasgow International Brigadier’s who lost their lives fighting the fascist Franco regime in Spain from 1936-1939. The Spanish Civil War is viewed as a pre-cursor to World War Two , acting as a testing ground by Franco’s allies Mussolini and Hitler. The International Brigades were made up entirely of volunteers most of whom were working class. The UK Government had adopted a non-intervention policy on the issue of Spain but the 40,000 volunteers; 2,100 from Scotland and 550 from Glasgow did not. They took up the fight against fascism when others wouldn’t. The sacrifices that the volunteers and their families made should not be forgotten and new generations of Glaswegian’s should be aware of this piece of working class, local and international history.
After the commemoration at the La Pasionaria statue, a social event was held with live music, speakers and poets who include legendary working class folk singer Arthur Johnstone with backing guitarist Stephen Wright. Calum Baird, fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival played us a selection of traditional folk/protest songs plus a taster from his new album; No Right Turn. Paul Sheridan & Chris Cruickshank of folk rock Glasgow group; The Wakes also played a range of protest and The Wakes numbers. Speakers were from the Peoples Assembly Scotland and International Brigades Memorial Trust, RMT Union & the Scottish Green Party.
