The United Nations estimate that approximately 50 million tonnes of electronic waste will be generated globally in 2019, but only around 10 million tonnes of this will be recorded as being properly collected and treated. 40 million tonnes are currently placed in landfill, burned or illegally traded and treated in a sub-standard way. Sadly, things seem to be getting worse. The volume of electronic waste is growing at a rate of 3 to 4% per year meaning that in 2025 there will be roughly 60 million tonnes generated, the equivalent to 290,000 Statues of Liberty! Electronic waste contains many valuable and critical raw materials that are important for producing new electrical equipment, but also hazardous substances that, if not properly treated, are detrimental to people’s health and the environment.
