Uzair bhai, so much analysis and still missed the fundamental problem :) The problem with Pakistan is its self-professed, perpetual enmity with India, and hatred of the Hindu. That is the reason it became a garrison state from the outset, it enthusiastically embraced the US-led security pacts and sought economic and military rents, and is in trouble today. It wanted to counter an imaginary enemy. There were 120 states in the non-aligned movement. They did not seek such rents. Many of them focused inwards. They did not have perpetual enemies of their own making. Once you and your guest (with her insufferable English) understand that, you will understand why Pakistan so willingly sought and embraced the global war economy. Blaming everyone else but incapable of looking at the mirror.

Detailed and thoughtful analysis, as always- thank you Uzair and your guest! One observation is that we have been extremely fortunate in India to have been kind of obstinate in our inward looking policies - while we have made our own mistakes, we have by and large avoided those discussed in the podcast - especially after 1991! And many of our policy choices have served us well.

What nonsense, have this podcast in any of the last 75 years before 2006 when Pakistan per capita was better than India, will you say the same? India has nothing to celebrate for its first 50 years, only after the changes done in 90s brought some change in 2000s, that's a failure in my book but hey we have better per capita today than Pak, so let's celebrate? Put this in your brain, Pakistani goal was never development, its goal is to Islamise India. If Modi declares India as Islamic country today, Pakistan will drop its animosity. It's a jihadi state not a normal state. India should look towards normal countries, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia,Thailand and ofcourse China for a comparison. Still a long way to go, hopefully Congress doesn't come back if India has any hope of becoming 5000$ per capita economy.

@@atulyt2129 Per capita income growth has actually slowed in percentage terms after Modi came to power compared to previous 15 years. India first 50 years they spent on building its own institutions, it was slow growth but they built institutions and businesses who could compete otherwise India would have ended up like Pakistan.

@Zab22 U cant just do market capitalism without allowing your local business the space to build. India invested in its Public sectors for industries, IITs and space program and tried to do makeinIndia but it was a hard learning curve. They made mistakes which all of us do when starting with a dream. People think just do capitalism would work magic with a population of 5% literacy. Germany Japan had very high literacy rates and had industrialized even before the world wars. Its stupid to make comparision with them. Korea had American aid and support & not have to invest in defense expenditure like India and it invested heaviliy in its education. India thought it could do all on its own and did not trust outsiders and had much tougher situation with large illiterate population and less resources and skills. Its taken time to learn from mistakes, even today we are doing a mix. China was also socialist , it helped them build local capacities but they also realized that FDI is important and opened up their economy.

@Zab22 firstly u tell me which country had such low literacy rate like India and non existent industrialzation status and went for capitalism and became developed. Germany, japan were high literacy and industrialization before world war itself. Even today India is not fully capitalistic and has the highest import tariffs in the world because our industries will get wiped out.

Uzair and Azeema are you not part of Pakistani elite ? What is your definition of Pakistani elite ? By the way Pakistan was carved out of Bharat by Muslim elite for themselves and Awaam came with it in Jahez. Why elites try to put them in various boxes like political elite business elite fauji elite etc though all are one and same ?

A good “clinical” analysis of state of affairs in Pakistan. The million dollar question is: How many Pakistanis have the required cognitive acumen as well as specific domain knowledge about these “not so much spoken” topics for them to apply rationality to analyse facts. Elite capture is not the only problem here… In fact, it is not even the “primary problem”.. It is up to you guys to “figure out” what the primary problems are and what their after effects are … Good luck !

Very interesting discussion. Similar situation in India as well, initial leaders of independent India like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi worked for public good, setting up premier institutes, brought in public sector undertakings, creating states based on linguistic profiles which reduced friction to a certain extent, nationalization of banks etc. Public good has to be seen with reference to time, creation of public sector undertaking and nationalization looked like public good till the 70s. These became white elephants by 90's While I don't agree with every policy of Modi, his focus on basic infrastructure like increasing power generation so we don't have power cuts, improved quality of trains and improvements in over all business environment. In spite of all these, the basic spirit of Indian government is to control people rather than service. I did not find a channel similar to Pakistonomy in India that I can listen to, please suggest if there is / are any.

Very clear and insightful. She knows her stuff. I wonder if scholars and intellectuals have a 'pessimism bias', a la Gramsci's 'pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will'. Intellectuals also tend to be more backwards looking, so it further adds to the sense that there is no way out. What if a leader could come along and resonate with the people regarding creating public goods etc...? Intellectuals' answer would be that the establishment would crush them.
