You are correct: before the Big I in Albuquerque was rebuilt, the control city for I-25 south was Belen, so Las Cruces is a step up. There used to be more signs for El Paso along I-25 in New Mexico (as in Socorro), but as Las Cruces has grown, NM has defaulted to its provincial ways and substituted Las Cruces. Interestingly, the first sign for El Paso is on the south side of Albuquerque listing both Las Cruces (218 miles) and El Paso (264 miles).

3:23 There’s no pull through in the city limits for the same reason that is the case in Ogden, Utah: The interstate goes through the outskirts. Does Fort Collins have a suburb with a pull through, and if so does that make Fort Collins meet your standard for what should be on overhead signs? I know Ogden does, but it’s in the opposite direction of the overhead signs with Ogden as a control city

At ABQ, I get NM using their own cities as control cities for I-40, but they should have used Amarillo as that for eastbound I-40, at the very least. And at the end of the highway, they should have used Tucson. Heck, Arizona even uses it for I-8, even though it officially ends before it gets there. And even they use El Paso on I-10 past Tucson.

I think Las Cruces makes more sense as a control city. After all, that's where the Interstate ends 😉 It's the second largest city in New Mexico. Putting El Paso up as the control city implies that I-25 takes you there, which it doesn't. Plus, getting anyone in the center of the state (the corridor between Santa Fe and Albuquerque) to acknowledge the existence of Texas is pulling teeth...they hardly acknowledge Las Cruces, even! I lived in Las Cruces for eight years...
@cubsrule2040

I have actually seen a lot of instances of "indirect" control cities being used on certain highways. For example, I-40 in Arizona signs Los Angeles going westbound from Flagstaff, and I-8 east in the same state signs Tucson. There's one highway in my state (New Mexico) with an indirect control city, and that is NM 502; Santa Fe is the control city going east out of Los Alamos even though it ends at US 84/285 in Pojoaque. And I get that El Paso isn't on I-25, but despite that, it's a straight shot from Albuquerque; and it's even mentioned on a lot of distance signs on I-25 south between Albuquerque and Las Cruces. So, in this case, I wouldn't mind I-25 south using El Paso as the primary control city from Albuquerque, but I would use Las Cruces as a secondary.
@mxderate
2 жыл бұрын
El Paso is the logical control city because it's not much further and is 6x the size of Las Cruces. There are many other control cities that Interstates don't actually go to, but are logical control cities. For example, Arizona signs I-40 for Los Angeles going westbound, and Tucson on I-8 going eastbound, which are logical control cities.

@@mxderate AASHTO disagrees. Although New Mexico violates AASHTO control city suggestions, Las Cruces is the recommended control city, on both I-10 and I-25. It even crosses state lines and DOT's, as TxDOT puts Las Cruces up as the westbound control city in El Paso on I-10 😉

Prior to the 2010s I-25 South at I-80 was signed for Denver but was charged to Fort Collins for no other reason than because WYDOT just wanted a closer city. They did the same with replacing Omaha with Sidney for I-80 East. They just never updated the signs on I-80 for some reason. Also the distance to Denver is listed on one mileage sign in WY but it’s just before Cheyenne. On I-25 South in CO, they really could have dropped their bias and just used Santa Fe or Albuquerque after Pueblo. NM could have kept this going since Springer and Las Vegas (should have put NM after it btw) really aren’t that important. I have no issue with Las Cruces being the final control city, however.
