Got my first gps in may 91. It was a magellan 100 plus and it cost 2,700.00 on sale just lowered from 5,300.00 by 93 they were 200.00 for a garmin. Things that changed cruising forever

Love it. We didn't have the money so we didn't get ours till I believe it was 1992 and think we paid like 200-300.00. It was a big chunk of cruising money at the time. Lol sure be the hell out of sat. Nav and noon site's.

Back in the '80s I stored my NACRA 5.8 catamaran in the Dana Point boat yard and every single time I'd pick it up to go sailing i'd have to first go to the local marine hardware store to replace parts stolen off my boat.

Know this is an older interview but wander if he was friends with a very dear friend who past away a few years ago. John Chalker? He was a crop duster when he wasn't sailing. They would have been about the same generation and the yachting community was quite small back then. He became my adoptive cruising dad in 91 when we met him headed for central America and no GPS they where over two grand in 91. Sextant is great when the weather is good and scary when it's not and you wander where that reef or island is in the middle of the night. Cheers

I wondered if it was me fatty was talking about when he said about rowing a yacht around , I did that for a while when my outboard died and I saved up for a yanmar diesel engine.. but it could have been anyone who was as determined as me to not let small things stop me...cheers

I think some romance and skill would be put back into sailing if we ditched dirty diesel, and converted to electric, and had regeneration from the prop abilities. If Delos' powerplant ever dies, consider the conversion. Sailing Uma has done this, and they are both incredibly skilled and conscious sailors as a result.

I first saw GPS on a yacht in 1982 and I was like: what the hell kind of alien technology is this? The box was around 4u (4 x pizza boxes stacked) and the display was super-primitive: LEDs I think - certainly no maps, just LatLng. Periodically, it would go offline and say "Not enough satellites in range".
