This clip (still hillarious) is clearly from another time. It plays differently now than it once did because it has something to teach us about the nature of reality and of perception.

I'll never forget the advice my father gave me on my wedding day: "And I remember how, in the last episode of the Bob Newhart show, he woke up and it had all been a dream". This actually happened. Also, thanks, dad.

My god, Newhart's delivery and comedic timing are the best. Because of the way he phrases things, he always allowed the laughter to permeate right through a sentence and the middle of one of his thoughts. His pausing to let the audience laugh, is sheer brilliance. I'm sad he only made two series, though I know it took a lot out of him. That is just brilliant TV.

Actually he made three series - the last one was called "Bob" from 1992-1993 - they filmed 25 episodes for the first season and pulled the plug on the third season after 5 episodes had aired with a total of 8 in the can - with the last three episodes eventually premiering on TV Land many years later.

Actually, Bob had about three or four different shows, the first one when I was in highschool in 1961 was a variety hour with him doing telephone sketches. There were others after the Vermont ski lodge show where this most hilarious sketch took place. You'd have to Google them to know what they were and why they didn't quite make it.
