Thanks for doing the interview and posting it. I just started learning Forth with Flash Forth 5 on a PIC and AVR. I guess if Chuck read a book and discovered he could design silicon, I just took Forth History 101 :-) -Jake

Kudos to Chuck for an attitude to match any sailor who recognizes he is heading into uncharted waters, the bravado to do so and the willingness to share the experience. The few but notable times Chuck said "and I don't know how to do that" but the glint in his eye belies his ability to take up any challenge and make it so!

At 57:27 he is describing a VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) design. But his stack CPU designs are also extremely RISCy: instructions are (far) less than in conventional processors (he doesn't need to encode references to registers, instructions manipulate values on top of stack implicitly; IIRC, he also doesn't have different addressing modes, it's a pure load&store), so their encoding require few bits and so his "long instruction word" is much less long than in conventional VLIW (16 bit in the case of Novix). A good reference about stack engines is "Stack Computers: the new wave" by Philip J. Koopman, Jr., freely available on-line on author's site.

Chuck certainly had a long eventful career. He impacted my career. I wonder if he is related to my Uncle Otto from Pennsylvania as well. I also, like him, enjoyed Forth for multiple projects and would like to continue to enjoy it. This interview was very interesting!

10.000 cores on one chip - low energy - must be a dream machine to mine bitcoin, since they are so powerhungry and I doubt they would be able to match the speeds given from a board with 16 chips per machine, then parallell connect them to a hive of such machines.

The interviewer seems to know very litle about computer languages, programing, computer history etc. In depth knowledege of these subjects perhaps would result in a better interview. I have always been curious of how does one go anout creating a computer language. What tools one uses etc. A general road map please. Seems so confusing. Most univerdities just teach you programing in a language. Creating languages is kept secret. Creating operating systems is even more of a secret, it seems . Moore mentions Bill Gates as a competitor near 35:00 and the crazy interviewer interrups......

I am the interviewer in this video (Mark Wills). You can't please everyone all the time! :-) Chuck is in the twilight years of his life (though he's as strong as an ox), and we felt it was important to provide a retrospective interview, on Charles Moore, the man and his life. It's not specifically about Forth, though of course Forth is synonymous with Charles Moore. If I have the pleasure of meeting him again, I may indeed try and delve deeper into his thoughts on programming, and on Forth. However, there are already many videos here on KZitem where Charles puts forward his views on Forth and the programming industry in his own words. There are not so many videos or documents about Charles *himself* and his history. That is what this interview is/was trying to address! Regards Mark
