Allegedly Stockton's net worth was 12 million. But to do something like this you would need hundreds of millions to invest. By comparison, James Cameron spent 40 million on the sub to get to the Mariana Trench and 10 million on the sub for the Titanic. And those were only for 1-2 people. James has even said, he makes movies to afford deep sea exploration. I get now everyone wants to distance themselves from Stockton. But these videos are so important. It’s worse than that. There was also a total ignorance of system safety engineering in both cases. NASA even said that o rings manufactured by Thiakol that had degraded by thirty percent post-flight had a safety factor of “three” as by their logic, you could use them another three times before they totally perished. They actually had a safety factor of zero as they had already failed under operation - they were not intended to perish at all. They had gotten away with it for previous launches because the remaining material prevented egress of fuel but on the day that it blew up, it was so cold that the contraction opened up new gaps so that when they perished under operation in the first stage of flight this time, and for the second “above the clouds” stage of flight when the pilots rammed the throttles home, there was nothing to prevent fuel egress straight to a source of ignition. So the shuttle blew up and everyone died. Stockton rush did the same thing with carbon fibre. Creaking and delaminating sounds heard inside the sub were passed off by him as meaning you could tell how deep you were by them - in fact, the material was already in a condition to fail catastrophically. He also said, “it’s five inches thick, there’s a long way to go” when in fact five metres would have produced the same result, instantaneous catastrophic failure. Misunderstanding or wilful ignorance? I’ll let you be the judge. He fired people who told him what the score really was with his shitty design and faulty logic so I’d personally say it was wilful ignorance.

The real reason is because human grade cranes are very expensive but much safer. Using the platform just adds another element of danger to the passengers and crew making it harder to inspect/repair the vessel. 2- He says, Some work was done by the Navy and the use of composites was deemed unsafe. Then goes on to explain he built an airplane out of it and it worked so a sub can be made out of it too. "It can be done but it has to be done right". Imagine thinking you are smarter than the whole U.S. Navy with a bottomless budget and some of the greatest minds to ever walk the earth. Wow if that don't prove negligence, I don't know what does.

It's an endless feedback loop of his mind spring loaded to kill himself and four people along with him. I worked in industrial design over many years as a model maker. I knew before hearing of this disaster that carbon fiber had NO business being application-used in compression designs. Carbon fiber can't hold against compression forces, especially at those kind of depths. The saving grace here is all five of them died completely unaware of what actually happened. Their bodies were crushed beyond recognition before the thought that they in fact died or were about to die. I realize I can't speak to the engineering details of Rush's knowledge and education on this subject, but I do feel confident that he didn't have enough knowledge, considering what happened. The proof being in the eating, as it were. He also referenced the aerospace industry in connection to the carbon fiber hull, but I'm not sure that that industry translates to deap sea submersibles. One tries to keep the pressure on the inside, and the other the, the outside. Also, "wokeness" didn't kill these people. I am in fact a "White guy in his 50's", and I feel confident in my education and knowledge set in my career field. I would expect to be paid more than a recent college graduate, regardless of their demographic. I think Rush just didn't want to pay the people with the required experience, and he didn't want to be contradicted on his passion project. There is no problem with explorers/adventurers pushing the limits and occasionally failing and paying with their own life. Its also something that happens with innovative new companies to push the needle forward. The issue is the fact this was basically customers paying to do beta testing on an experimental craft that we now know was a death trap waiting to happen. In spite of the waiver they signed its quite obvious that corners were cut and Stockton was basically gambling his company and passengers lives without some of them being fully aware quite what they were doing. You can see this by watching some of the videos of prospective customers when they were going out on the ship on youtube. Many seem quite naive about just where they are going and how dangerous it is without a properly certified vessel to do it on

If we believe James Cameron he claimed through his connections they had dropped ballasts and were trying to get back to the surface. Stockton may have known something was wrong. But may to keep everyone calm gave some excuse or said nothing and just said we are going back up. I don't think they knew they were about to die. I figured out why he didnt postpone this trip. He was getting SUED(filed in Feb of 2023) for not refunding a trip that didnt happen in 2018, so this mustof pushed him to disregard redflags more than usual. "In 2021, after several delays, Rush finally started his deep submergence business. By 2023, Rush had made at least 13 successful trips to the Titanic. Prior to the June 2023 dive, Rush was sued by a couple in Florida over a planned 2018 dive to the Titanic that they claim was repeatedly cancelled and postponed."

@vibratingstring Misleading remark, navy uses controllers to control periscopes, not to control propulsion (a critical system). Furthermore, I would imagine navy submarines also have an alternate manual method of controlling the periscope in case the controller fails. Propulsion is a critical system, you can move without a periscope, you can't move without propulsion. Even worse, Titan was only controlled by that controller...there has been no mention of a backup control method.
