In this interview, Ambassador Hakala underlines that the EU has long-term relations with Central Asian countries. “We have worked for 30 years and increased the level of our engagement since then”. In 2019 EU approved a second strategy to renew the priorities of the region but despite the new regime in Kabul and new security threats it is important to increase our dialogue and our political engagement with Central Asian countries, she says. The Ambassador also recognizes that the Taliban regime in power since August 2021 has changed the plans in the region especially those related to infrastructures, gas, railway, and others, but she also says that Central Asian countries as part of the international community try to find a way to sort out the challenges with the regime. Ambassador Hakala approaches water problems in Central Asia and in this sense, she says that the EU has a lot of programs in the water sector and is offering expertise and technology and financing bilateral projects in the region. Hakala concludes that “we have big challenges regarding water reservoirs, climate change, security, terrorist groups, arms trafficking, big issues that we try to discuss and find solutions”.
