The fact that you went into this COMPLETELY blind without even knowing about the queer relationship, respect. I can see why people got mad at your reaction, but I find it rather human and probably how the average person would have reacted. Your surprise at the gayness yet genuine enjoyment of the series shows why representation in media is important. Hopefully in the future no one will be surprised at the romances shown on screen, whether they are heterosexual or not. Good story telling and care for a project matters, and the kind of relationship people that are depicted in said project shouldn’t be the reason why potential audiences overlook it. For now though, it sucks, but it’s understandable.

Just FYI people in the comments looking to complain about the queerness in the show - Anne Rice (author of the books) worked on the show herself, married them on Facebook, makes the relationships clear as romantic in the books, and has openly stated their queerness. The reason it isn't explicit in the books is due to the immense censorship and homophobia of the time it was written, and you simply cannot use the asexuality of the characters in the books to deny them being lovers. And anyways, the show has made itself clear in its expression to be separate from the books so even if that doesn't convince you, hopefully you can be mature enough to just leave it alone and do something else with your time :)

Personally I would have cast a hulking behemoth to contrast with Lestat's leaner frame. And Rice could care less about her character's sexualities or about their race, but this show seemed to make an issue of both. In Rice's books, sexual preferences and race just existed naturally within the story without even having to be mentioned in and of themselves, unless the color of a person was in the context of describing someone's beauty or physical qualities, as she was always very descriptive. But as usual, people making movies and shows are putting political correctness into so many things that don't originally belong there. It's a complete turn off for me although this wasn't as distastefully done as some. Also just too much about this diverged way too much from the actual book. They might as well have said it was only based on the book. Otherwise I liked the acting and the story in it's own right, at least so far.

i'm pretty sure they said "based on the novel" as a subtitle... and I've never read the books so i don't know a whole lot, but as far as I can tell, Anne Rice was talking about race in all the wrong ways. From what I'm hearing, Louis was originally a white slave owner who, even in the modern era that the interview takes place in, refers to his black slaves as "savages". Honestly, mabye makeing all these timeline/backstory changes, and casting a black actor to play Louis was a little too much "Political correctness", but at the very least I think that makeing him not a slave owner was a 100 percent needed change. In this day and age, haveing any character thats not an explicit villian own slaves doesnt realy jive well with modern sensibilites.
