Okay, let's be real. I really looked forward to this video, I expected to get some answers after months of no or very little communication from KZitem about demonetization, ads, algorithms, the secret codes etc. All I got from this interview is the same vague, indirect statements that we've been getting over the last few months. There was nothing, absolutely nothing new or enriching in these 19 minutes. As a creator that tries to make a living out of, let's say, slightly edgy, not politically correct content, I am extremely disappointed. Every single video I uploaded in 2017 got demonetized, no suggested views, no recommendation boxes. I truly don't believe KZitem cares about creators as much as they care about advertisers. After all, it's advertisers who have been bringing money to them, so why care so much about creators? Let's adapt to the PC rules and policies of the biggest companies in the world! Only mentioning the freedom of speech in this video is such a hypocrisy. I also can't believe Robert was born in the same country as me. We're very direct and honest here, unlike him in this interview. Shit, I'm gonna have some beers.

@Galerkith

if you were expecting solutions to be had in this video you likely had your expectations set too high, what we can expect from this is to have a more "personal" talk with someone with power at youtube instead of it just being a faceless comment, it gives a different meaning to what is being said even if the words are the exact same, this will help moving forward just not instantly. the comment section of this video is likely being watched with more attention than normal as well so as long as talks here don't devolve into a slugfest issues being debated here may have a stronger influence in the future.

Johnny Peters I like the idea of this but would be curious on how to scale it. The obvious thing would be something like videos over 1 million subs, particularly ones with young demographics, get reviewed immediately by a board or committee, but I feel like that would become very hard to scale as KZitem continues to grow. Also that leaves all of us who are under 1 million (or whatever number they would potentially decide on) left in about the same position we are now. I definitely like your idea a lot, just thoughts to build on it

I think this was a great start. It's impossible to cover all those topics in depth in a 20 minute interview, so naturally a lot was left on the table. I don't think this means Casey was letting him off easy, I think he just wanted to cover as much as possible. (The yellow icon/demonetization discussion alone could go on for another hour!) I'm happy that someone at YT was willing to sit down with Casey and go unscripted to some tough questions. But, I would love to see more--a monthly interview would be great!

Thank you Mr Robert for participating in this interview. Understanding American Freedom is the first step Mr Robert. And that is the Freedom of the People. Advertisors (the oligarchy) are the revenue of YT and the content creators. Without them this platform does not function. To that I say, with the multitude of companies/advertisors available, there should be enough to go around. Personal Liberty should be paramount. I should be at liberty to choose which content to watch or not watch. Creators should be at liberty to create or not create by their Choice. You/YT have decided to make my choice for me. This is unacceptable. I am just one, but one of many, who enjoy and learn from various subjects presented on YT. Several of the categories are presently under stifling scrutiny with entire channels being terminated. A number of these subjects are a staple of American Freedom and personal Liberty. Mr Robert, Sir, please come to know what this freedom is as well as from what and whom it originates = We The People. . .

He mostly skittered around these questions in a way that was flawless and unnoticeable without giving any *real* concrete answers. Most people will buy it, but I won’t. We still have no *real* understanding of what’s really going on and where their mindset is going. If that’s how they are going to be, fine. But as for the rest of us, we will continue to be on a look out for a better user friendly platform that will give good hard working content creators a real chance.

I have been using this example, " That was really, really hard.....trying to stabilize an eco-system that is, ya know, moving around." Huh ? Really ? Nice guy, but maybe not the most relatable personality. IMO, in this circumstance, people prefer a direct, break-down-the-basics approach. Answers like those are a) unclear and ambiguous b) presumes the listener has a detailed and historical knowledge of the top, and c) just sounds too much like a politician's answer. Why was it "hard" for you and what do ya mean by ECO-SYSTEM? Maybe follow-up questions could have made a difference ?

Thank god other people are noticing, he basically did this; He starts getting off topic but keeps it similar to what was asked (If he could empathize with how a KZitemr's work into his own work experience), and answers the question on the topic he switched it to. In this case, he answered the question "How can you relate your past work to the work of content creators on KZitem". Much easier question to answer than how he could relate to the effect that the videos he's demonetizing have on the people who rely on them for income.

yup he kind of danced around most of everything. Even the last question he said, freedom of speech, opportunity, access, freedom to belong. While he did name them a bit more different from standard he just gave some obvious ideas as an answer to: What's next. The guy should have answered with specific new features to be coming in fallowing few months or years. Similar stuff happened with every other question.

Thank you for the interview Casey. Here are the take home messages from the interview: 1) be a female youtuber (it is helpful) 2) they wont tell us what is appropriate, inappropriate to post for youtube videos. 3) if you are a small youtuber like me who make original parodies, they would probably ignore you because YOU CANT EVEN EMAIL THEM AND ASK ABOUT A SIMPLE QUESTION when they recently announced that they will hire 10,000 human labour to manually review channels

youtube should have a youtube channel. now hear me out. what if youtube hired some people to run effectively a news show where they talk about what they are doing to advance the platform and fix relationships between advertisers - youtube - creators and viewers. they could put the videos they make on a special page on youtube for everyone to see. say they do daily or weekly uploads to let us know what’s going on. they need a platform to talk to us like this, and ironically they are also the biggest streaming service on the internet, why don’t they utilize this to talk to the community. this is what i think at least.

Mad respect to Casey and big thanks to Robert for doing this but I have to be honest. This wasn't at all what I expected. I don't feel like we have any more answers that we did before the interview. This is all stuff we have already heard. On top of that, he talks like the yellow demonetization icon isn't a problem anymore and their bot is working. Trust me. It is not. I get videos all the time that get flagged and have nothing but harmless words in them. So for him to set there and talk like things are fixed and OK shows how totally out of touch he is with what is actually going on or its a PR move to try and make it look like everything is OK when he knows it is not. Once again I appreciate the effort but I was really expecting a more in-depth interview. I would really like to see Robert do an interview with Philip DeFranco.

YT works pretty simple... you have a big audience, you will be rewarded! I don't understand what people think this is? The first reason to create content should be passion about something! All I hear is complains about monitization... YT is no welfare... there are millions of small creators out there and all are complaining about money... this is not how entertainment works! In my opinion they should raise the bar much higher in order to be allowed monetization, that way there'd be more quality on YT and less effortless attempts to get money out of it!

He didn't actually answer your questions. He gave nice little soundbites and platitudes, but didn't give any concrete responses. I felt like it was a bunch of fluff. I would have liked to hear something like, "this is the method by which we are going to open up lines of communication between you, the creators, and us, the corporation. Additionally, this is the way that *other* people in the community can reach out to KZitem". KZitem's biggest downfall is their lack of communication. I understand that they have shut that down because opening those floodgates is effectively asking for a logistical nightmare, but it needs to be addressed at some point. You can't have a bunch of 'employees' who cannot talk to their 'bosses'. These people are pretty brilliant... surely they can come up with some type of system that makes the community feel heard.

KZitem needs a discovery page for new creators.They have some random discovery video they post once every month of some new content creator, but the requirement is that you post often. Some of us content creators spend a ridiculous time making videos and can realistically only push 1-2 videos a month. Not sure why the algorithm opposes quality over quantity. I personally spend 100+hours making 1 video, and with school and my job that makes it nearly impossible to push content out quickly.

To get an early read on whether your content is likely to receive a yellow icon, you can upload a video as unlisted or private and check the monetization status before making the video public. KZitem typically does an initial classification of the video within 2 hours after upload. If you make adjustments to the title, description, or thumbnail, the system will take another look at the video within 24 hours (without having to request a manual review).

@Rasmus Raarup THIS^^^ Thank you. It's possible to have a informative and interesting interview without going for the f*cking throat. The whole world would be better off if there was more civilized discussion such as this. People often forget that KZitem is a business, and business is imperfect. As much as they would love to be a social justice warrior, they still have to make money, and that means balancing the NEED to make money and the DESIRE to do the right thing. That doesn't mean that every business in the world can be unethical, money grubbing a**holes in the name of making a buck, but the consistent obliviousness to the complexities of running a business of this size is maddening. It drives me crazy when people want all these services on the web, but then completely ignore the fact that they require ENORMOUS amounts of capital to remain intact. You want a platform that allows you to make money with little to no financial investment? Be ready to make some compromise.

I don't know if my comment will be seen but here goes, I was waiting to watch this video and had high hopes, but really although this youtube executive seems like a good person, he's the embodiment of lack of communication from youtube. His answers were vague, and most of the time it was nothing but tip-toeing around the actual question. He speaks a lot but he really isn't saying anything at all, and every time he answers a question it leaves me even more confused than before, exactly like youtube's overall communication. I love this platform i really do, although I'm a tiny tiny youtuber, but I see where this platform is going and I know that a lot of big time youtubers realize that youtube is going to go downhill soon. Everything rises and falls, and youtube has been rising for for so long. There's increasing guidelines, increasing lack of communication, increasing rules, regulations, and censorship. KZitem is the biggest platform for media of all time however, as it increases in size, it increases in censorship and restrictions, the platform is prioritizing its advertisers, giving them information, providing them routes, and siding with them, while creators, the core of this platform, are being kept in the dark. This platform is dying slowly, and as of now there is no competition. So really, makng internet videos itself, is slowly dying.

Problem is: there's no solid alternatives to youtube. Every market needs competition otherwise the customers will suffer. If a single company rules all the market, it will enforce watever policicy it wants, to it's customers and they won't be able to do anything because there's no alternatives. Thus, KZitem needs competition or it will continue it's stalinist regime.

Ok, but there's still no answer to the fundamental flaw in the current demonetization system: if videos are consistently demonetized and then remonetized after review, it means those creators are *not* violating the community guidelines. So, YT's response to "how can I avoid demonetization" being "check the guidelines" is completely unhelpful because those creators are already meeting the guidelines. There needs to be a way to address this flaw.

@bigtime9597

This was addressed just a few days ago. Any videos that are demonetized because they violate the guidelines (which are now reviewed by human beings) will most likely be demonetized permanently, with the channel possibly losing their ability to monetize entirely, along with KZitem silencing the channel entirely by removing them from the Recommendations section. In other words, no more partnership, no more sponsors, no more having their content pushed to the top of the page. This all happened about... two or three days ago.
@CaptCovfefe515

Videos should be reviewed automatically before they are monetized so creators don’t have to ask for the monetization back, and they should also be reimbursed for lost money prior to monetization on each video.
@InvasiveWargaming

My point is that my videos are consistently flagged and demonetized by the algorithm. When I ask for a human to review it, they are *always* re-monetized. In other words, the human reviewer concluded that my videos *do* meet community guidelines and that the *algorithm was wrong* to demonetize my videos. Despite this, I'm stuck in a continual loop of upload-demonize-review-remonetize and there's no way for me to address the problem because there is no tool available to assess the cause of demonetization. When I contact YT, I only receive canned answers about checking the guidelines, but again, YT employees have determined that my content meets those guidelines already. It's like failing a multiple choice test because I used a pencil instead of a pen, when everyone expects the good ol' No. 2 pencil to be the appropriate writing utensil.

My suggestion to KZitem would be to remove the algorithm entirely, or to have someone else come in and refine it instead of having the algorithm try to learn by itself. When you leave a a program to learn what it needs to do, it behaves like a child. Mistakes will be made for a very long time, and for us as creators, it costs us more than it helps us. The problem here, is that it hurts KZitem as well because the algorithm stops its own developers from getting paid. KZitem is effectively shooting themselves in the foot with a machine gun here. This new system is going to be in full swing in about 8 days. Until then, we won't know much. However, I think it's a good idea to use this very platform to bring up the issue. I'd also have to see your content to get a little more insight on why this is happening. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a KZitem employee. However, I do like seeing what's going on in the business world. Mike's suggestion is something that's a little off and cannot be done, nor will it ever be done for the simple reason that KZitem is under no legal obligation to reimburse you for lost wages because of the fact that you do not work for KZitem. KZitem is a platform that allows you to earn money in a virtual space.

he went in too soft and probably cut a lot of the answers during editing because it was just corporate speech pandering to shareholders. I appreciate the willingness to go there as a first step. Hopefully the feedback they receive from this is positive and they do this every month and start opening more and sharing more. I've seen lots of hour long interviews with susan and a there a lots of words used but not much information being said.

This was really amazing BUT I don't feel like he delved in quite deep enough into what direction KZitem as a company is trying to get their content to go in. I do think that KZitem's top executives having sit down interviews like this on the platform is a GIANT step in the right direction. I would like to see more of this when big issues arise so we could get responses much faster along with what they are trying to do to fix them. This would allow the creators to provide input so we can be part of the solution as well.

Jaret - I worked in advertising/publishing for over 30 years. KZitem makes money by running advertising. You make money by having advertisers on your videos. My advice is, whenever you make a video, pretend you are an advertiser and think, would I want my ad to run on this video? Now remember, the big advertisers are very sensitive to inflammatory content and don't want their ads to be be anywhere near it. Keep that in mind, and go and make good content. Good luck!
@ThePatels

So you are saying Advertisers were ok to put ads on Logan Paul even before the whole suicide incident? Becuase his content was crap, is crap and will be crap. The advertiser wants exposure, they don't really give a hoot about content unless it gets a negative attention. Advertiser cares about how big of an exposure they have they don't worry about content or content creators till it's on national news with major backlash.

absolutely, how can you have all the decision makers that effect our lives as creators not have any personal relationship or conversation with grass roots creators. It doesn't mater, whether you have 100 subs or 100,000 subs. Good creators need a voice, recognition and to be supported. We all start at Zero ultimately.

Nice job getting the conversation started, though this interview left a lot of unanswered and half answered questions. Still, dealing with KZitem for most non-Casey folk, is basically like shouting into the woods...so getting any type of real responses from one of the powers that be, instead of just a useless form letter reply, is a significant step forward. 💪🏼💯
