The only reason Soviets got back to 19th century was Civil war and then going full-blown communism. Imperial army had *some* armour in WW1, best of which were heavy armoured cars (or rather armoured trucks) with cannons. Eastern front was more favourable for cavalry and cars rather than slow-ass early tanks.

Its the other way around. Just like with every war, internal or external, it forces army modernization. From US civil war or unification of prussia all the way back to civil war periods such as italian disputes and sengoku japan in the 1500s, it always forced rapid modernization. The red revolution was no different.

@the annanamous p-51 pilot No they got snubbed pretty dramatically by General Zhukov at Khalkhin Gol. Pretty much ended Japan's plans to invade the Soviet Far East, which is more or less why the Pacific got it a few years later instead.

@the annanamous p-51 pilot as people already pointed - you confused it with the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. When Japan tried to invade USSR in 1938 and 1939 (and Battle at Hasan lake and Battle of Khalkhin-Gol), they got ultimately crushed at both instances.

The T-28 and T-35, even though they look impractical, they are a menacing sight on the battlefield. If i ever saw one of these rolling, i would've shit bricks without an anti tank rifle or an anti-tank gun.

Niseini they were fairly light tanks, designed to be fast. You could take off the tracks, use it as a wheeled road vehicle. By the time Barbarossa rolled around they were obsolete though, got slaughtered.
