What about feeling intimidated in practice rooms? I know this is a super weird question and I'm not really sure that anyone else has this fear, but whenever I'm in school I just feel like everyone else in the rooms around me are so much better at playing. Especially when there is another clarinetist on the floor and they're just being amazing and nothing is sound proof so if I can hear them, they can hear me. Yeah... it's definitely a problem and it's ironic because I'm intimidated out of practicing bc I'm insecure about my playing, but I'd probably feel less insecure if I practiced instead of sitting there staring at the wall and listening to other people practice 😂😂😂 Love your videos! Thanks ❤️

Someone told/advised me once that EVERYONE sounds good behind a practice room door. It helped me realize that I wasn’t the only one intimidated. I also started practicing early in the morning before most others arrived.

I've actually felt like this three times, once when I started doing a new music program with my local high school(they would have teachers and some older high schoolers to help you) and I knew _no one_ in that room with a director I'd never worked with was pretty terrifying. I remember sitting next to an oboe player and I asked him "How do you play that?" and he really helped me out of my shell. I've also played with people older than me in a concert band and the first day was pretty intimidating and the music was really hard(at the time) but the couple of people I sat next to were really helpful and nice. The third time was when I went to a new arts and music summer camp and again, I knew _absolutely nobody_, but the people were really nice and I made some friends which was pretty cool.

I remember the first rehearsals with my Youth Orchestra... They were so intimidating. Before that I had only played in the school orchestra, where I was principal chair and one of the best students. Then I came into the rehearsal room and I knew nobody... When I asked the conductor where I should sit he just said "somewhere over there" (I play cello) I asked approximately 4-5 people if I could sit next to them until I found someone... I had made a mistake reading the plan of rehearsal, so I had practised the wrong music. Therefore I didn't know how to play it. It felt like the music rushed past me and I didn't know what to do. I almost started crying. I had the impression, that every single person knew how to play every single note. Of course that was not true. Now, one year later, I have made some friends, now I am part of the orchestra and I can enjoy rehearsals and concerts. Also, my skills have developed very well and I have become better. Whenever there is someone new who seems to be alone, I talk to them to make them feel less insecure. :) Sorry, it's a bit long but I really needed to write it down and share that story. And sorry for grammar mistakes, English is a foreign language for me :)

My biggest intimidation was shortly after I got to college. I had done youth orchestra for two years at the end if high school. I auditioned for the better of the area youth orchestras maybe about a week before my first semester of college. I got in and I was assistant first and also english horn. At the time, the program was very new and consisted of tons of college students from various schools. Well, the principal four were all college seniors. Three out of the four went to the same school. They all went to a school with a much larger music program. A music program that had rejected me(even though I had gotten into an equally as good or better school-and chose instead to go to a private liberal arts college). Well they all seemed to be fantastic players and they seemed very confindent. I was terrified. I thought that they must think I'm terrible. The principal clairnet, who was the one out of four that went to a different school actually tried to help me and give me advice one day. She purposely stayed late to talk to me. But I was so intimidated that I rejected her help, which I deeply regret now. At times, I would actually even let what I thought that they thought of me affect my playing. So, on my audition, I played the English Horn solo from The Pines of Rome, which is scary by itself. Pines of Rome ended up being scheduled for the spring concert. I kept messing up in rehearsal (even though I knew it backwards and forwards). I was terrified. Thankfully, I forced myself to overcome my "fear of the solo", which was really a fear of being ridiculed by the principal four and anyone else in the orchestra. The solo went really well on the concert, other than a tiny blip at the beginning. At the end of the piece, when the conductor had soloists stand up, I happened to glance over at the principal oboist, and he was smiling and it was a very proud smile. I think that's when I realized how silly I had been.

when i was a freshman in high school i went to play with a local college and the music was way harder than anything i have played and i was insecure and scared. i got kicked out a feew weeks later and i was crushed. i ended up getting in again after college and winning a first chair the same day. but every group i play with i always remember how scared i was so i work so hard to play in tune and with all the fundamental expected techniques and style expected of me, and it hasnt changed the way i felt all those yearsago

So I've been in youth orchestra groups for three years now and two out of the three were filled with intimidation. My first year I was in a lower group so I had musicians that were my age (12), so I could actually talk to people. Then, the next year (I was 13), I auditioned for the highest group and got in! Little did I know, I would never make any friends in that group. The other two oboists were graduating high school so there was a 4 year gap. I barely even said a sentence during rehearsal for the whole season. I had to force my mom to be a chaperone on one of our trips so I had someone to talk to. This year, I auditioned for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and I was accepted (I'm 14 now), and there's this summer program that I'm in. I'm sooooooo intimidated and scared to say anything to anyone :(. This summer program was also open to Alumni. The first chair oboist was 24........ Let that sink in. She's 10 years older than me.... (But we talked a little and I found out that she actually went to college with my oboe teacher! Small world right?). To sum it up, when the actual season starts for orchestra, I want to change being to quiet and make friends. Did you end up making friends in your time at the Vancouver Academy Symphony Orchestra? How did you do that? Any tips on making friends? Do I just walk up to people and say hi? HALPPPP! Thanks!!

Ok first off, congrats on making CYSO at 14 years old that's really good. Anyways it's pretty normal to be intimidated when you're younger than everyone else. I've been in this situation many times before. All I can say is just try and put yourself out there. And also usually there is someone like you who also is kind of timid and doesn't really have anyone to talk to or is maybe also younger than everyone so maybe look for that person and become their friend since you're both in the same situation you can maybe relate well? But eventually when you get older and you're the same age group as everyone else it will really pay off that you were there earlier than everyone else so it pays off at least :)

I am going to be a freshmen next year and I am going into my second year in marching band. As a rookie in MB you are not expected to play at all but now I am freshmen and was thrown on first with some upperclassmen on second and I felt really intimidated about it. I have been getting really close with all the other firsts in the clarinet section and it's been really fun though and I worked so hard to get to the level I am at I am proud to be on first.

I had the same experience with my first youth orchestra rehearsal. I was very intimidated because the principal flute and the piccolo player were both in the top wind ensemble at my school and they were both the best in my teacher's studio and they were both in Allstate. ( I was also 2nd flute btw) As the first rehearsal went one they really became my flute mothers and they really helped me work hard to achieve the same things they did. And it's also so weird now that at school I see freshmen in the younger ensembles are intimated by me because I jumped from the youngest ensemble to the top ensemble lol. It's just so interesting that almost everybody experiences this

Intimidation is a funny thing. When you discuss feeling intimidated (around 5:00 in) as you were the youngest participant in the room, just wait until you are one of the older participants - wait until you see how intimidated you feel when the young players show up. Again, intimidation is a funny thing - everyone can feel intimidated when comparing him/herself to the other participants. Your best advice at 7:36 really is true - look outside yourself - why are you there? Everyone can learn from everyone else, young, old, experienced, green.

Could you possibly do a video about wood flutes because I have a silver flute and I know the difference between silver and gold but I had seen a Rosewood flute with a Bb footjoint and I even watched your video about the softness of the metal like how the gold flutes have a darker tone because of it being a softer metal. But I would really appreciate if I knew how a wood flute played in comparison to a silver or gold flute. Thanks!

Hi Joanna! Let me just tell you that I watched your videos since I started playing the flute (3 years ago) but I also wanted to ask if you can do a video about being a guest soloist for an orchestra. 2 months ago, I was chosen to play a concerto with a professional orchestra but let me just tell you that it was my first time soloing with an orchestra. It was so much different from playing with a piano and gave me lots of stress. The worst part of this experience was that no one told me anything about this.. Please Joanna, I wish someone told me how it's like to play with an orchestra but there's no articles nor videos about concertos and I know this would help out so many people. Thanks!

I am a saxophonist and I was wondering why cant saxophones be in orchestras cause I've never seen saxophones in any orchestra
@alcain0209
8 жыл бұрын
The saxophone, compared to other woodwind instruments, is quite new. And orchestras are pretty "old-fashioned" and "must stick to tradition" for the most part I guess. And I also learned that the saxophone isn't used very much because of business practices and politics during the 19th century Paris music scene. Basically, people didn't like Adolphe Sax (inventor of the saxophone) very much. There maybe more information out there but basically that is why. However many modern composers occasionally write for saxophone so there is hope for saxophone players!
@lmallanao

I think saxes are used on rare occasions (but I might be wrong). My school used them once for a pretty recent concert (I play flute, and I only noticed when we start rehearsing for that concert that they weren't there for the Holiday concert)
@TheAndrewBarber
8 жыл бұрын
There are rare occasions that saxophones are used but the main reason they aren't is because the saxophone is a very new instrument relative to other woodwinds. Therefore it was not around when a lot of the orchestra music we know was being written. And so eventually the orchestra formed into the full traditional orchestra we have today that doesn't include saxophone. Another thing is that the saxophone is considered an "imperfect instrument"
