Hi Emily! I'm currently reading The Inheritance Trilogy, and oh man, it's long! It's not The Fifth Season for sure, and I'm really enjoying it, but I've been reading it for at least 2 months and I'm starting the third book. Also, a side note I loved The Fifth Season. I recommend you start with The Inheritance Trilogy; you'll be disappointed if you do it the other way around. Her writing has improved much since she wrote The Inheritance Trilogy and you can really tell.

I stopped reading a lot of older sci-fi because I got so tired of the sexism, and I HATE when people are like "oh but it was a different time" and all those excuses, I don't care what time it was written, it still makes me uncomfortable/angry reading it!!
@BookswithEmilyFox
6 жыл бұрын
The best part is when you mentioned that plenty of other books written during the same time weren't sexist or at least not nearly as bad. It's too easy to use these excuses :/ Just because it's been considered a classic doesn't mean it still should be... sure some books show how it used to be... but to often it's gratuitous!
@musiclistner94
6 жыл бұрын
Nah, I wouldn't call it limiting myself when I have read plenty of it in the last 10 years. Ive come to the conclusion that I don't like books that are sexists for no good reason, so I would rather pick up a book I know I will enjoy. Like Emily says in the comment above there are plenty of books that are considered classics that aren't sexists, so I would rather spend my time on them :) That would be my friendly advice, if you dont like the book, put it down and pick up another

I can so relate to having lots of books to be read. I love big books especially if the story is one that I can really get into but I'm also intimidated because they can take so long to get through and I have hundreds of books I own that need my attention. Some big books on my TBR include Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, the last two books of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series, Pillars of the Earth, Malzan Series by Steven Erikson (my boyfriend enjoyed the series so much he bought me the first four books as a birthday present, The Legend of Drizzt Book 1 that has three books in one by R.A. Salvatore, The Dragonlance Chronicles which includes three books in one by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Victoria The Queen by Julia Baird,, Eon by Alison Goodman, The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher, The Complete Arrows Trology by Mercedes Lacky, The Mists of Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley (read about half of them by the time I was in high school and loved them but it's been so long that it will be pretty much like to reading them for the first time), The Princes of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd, Catherine The Great by Robert K. Massie and Kate Morton's books. There's probably more hiding in the back of my shelves lol.

Ive been reading cassandra clares books for the first time this summer as a 21 year old. I do think the infernal devices is better inits cool steampunk-feel victorian setting and the villain is more interesting, but it has a love triangle which killed possibilities of a high rating for me. The Luminaries, Jerusalem by Simon Sebag, the rise and fall of the Egyptian empire, Brothers Karamazov, My name is Red, ugh ..... The list is so long. I'm also trying to read more big books this year. I always tend to love the bigger books I read but they are so intimidating! What if you spend all that time reading it and then don't like it! Also they usually have a lot of hype which maked them even more terrifying. Plus I know it means I probably won't get round to reading as many of the smaller books that I am equally excited about. Plus it feels great when you read lots in a month. 💪🏻 Went out and bought The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle yesterday after you raved about it. It's not usually a premise I'd gravitate towards but I bit the bullet. You convinced me. Planning on getting to it this week. I hope I love it as much as you did 🤞

War and peace, scares me so much! 😳 I want to read it and love it, but wow what a commitment lol. I’m also intimidated by The lightbringer series (I think that’s what it’s called) by Brent Weeks. Partly because of reviews I have seen for it and partly because every book is HUGE! It’s been on my TBR for awhile. I did read the first book in the Night Angle series by him and while I did see some issues with it overall I enjoyed most of it. THANK YOU!!!! Thank God someone finally said Brent Weeks Prism series is sexist!! I read it on the recommendation of other booktubers and I was so floored and disappointed how flagrantly sexist it was, It's a relief to hear someone else thinks so too

I get so much shit for mentioning it all the time (especially on Goodreads lol) but damn I don't understand how no one else mentions it... it's right there! So obvious XD I still haven't picked up book 2 because I'm not ready for more of it

@@BookswithEmilyFox I read the second one in hopes that it would get better like maybe some of the horrible things would be addressed at least but alas no it does not get better

I’m putting off Thrunderhead because I thought Scythe was over hyped. I’m putting off Six Of Crows because I’m afraid I won’t like it. I also keep putting off A Conjuring Of Light because I just don’t want it to be over!!!

Yeah I feel you. Thunderhead is better than Scythe but I still don't think it's one of the best books I've read. It won't make it to be "best of 2018" nor even my "top 5 books from Spring". It's good for a new YA book lol

I’m pretty sure Victoria Scwab announces on her Instagram that she’s coming out with a sequel series to the Darker Shade books in a couple years! Yay!! 😊

I can't get myself to read any of Brandon Sanderson's books...

Waaaaaaat Too big or scared to not like them? That's kinda why I tend to recommend everyone to start with Warbreaker! It's big but it goes fast and you only have to commit to finish one book (Sanderson is really good with endings so you get to experience that after only one!)

SAME. I bought The Final Empire and I can’t get passed the first 80 pages. The premise is so interesting and everyone seems to love the Mistborn series so much but I just haven’t been able to stay interested.

I have the first book from his Mistborn series and I REALLY want to read it but because of the size it's been on my shelves for months! I am considering picking it up (finally) but I HAVE to commit to a book that is as big as The Final Empire so I'm waiting for my exams to be over unitl I can finally pour all of my focus and attention into this book

Omg finally I found someone who is the same as me!! I bought the WHOLE mistborn trilogy. I forced myself to finish the first book but I really didn't enjoy it. I found it sooo boring and I couldn't stay interested in it. I've realized I just can't read adult high fantasy 😢

I read It's kind of a Funny Story when I was about 15 (~5 years ago) and I felt like it was relatable then because I was feeling very much like Craig, the main character. But looking back the teen angst premise would not work for me now that I'm older. The movie was worse though. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest felt a lot more profound to me and explores mental health/psychiatric wards as well in its own way. I had no idea Ned Vizzini had killed himself though and it does add a new very sad dimension to the story for me but strictly thinking about the book itself, it was okay. It's a little too John Green or Perks of Being a Wallflower for my taste. Rest in peace Ned.

Remind me, have you read any Asimov yet? I don't find him too sexist, but a little old-fashioned. The most intimidating book on my TBR is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.

I, Robot but that's it so far! I have "The Edge of Eternity" (I think that's the name?) also on my shelf to read!
