Dave that is set up nice. I’d install an AC just like you did it your other van . Plenty of room for a fresh water tank under the rear seat. Nice 12 volt compressor fridge. Gas operated heater for winter drawing fuel from the main fuel tank. Would make a great travel machine. Oh ya black out shades and a shower rod with black out shades above the rear of the front seats. I put one together years ago from a similar conversion van and, I loved it. Ted in Arkansas. Dave I’m going to try a hot pot for coffee or whatever and, I think it would be a nice simple addition

My camper is a 1999 Suburban with the same engine. It had sat up for a long time before I got it. It would drive fine for a while and then stop and not crank. Other times I would be driving and it would just shut down and I had to coast off the road with no power steering nor brakes. It was a huge pain. But it has been running for a couple years now and doing well. There are probably some weak ground points in the engine compartment. Find all the ground wires and tighten or replace them. A big issue with these guys. The two biggest problems were the Mass Air Flow Sensor and loose distributor and cap. The distributor housing is plastic and was broken loose. I had to get in in the right position and put a heavy duty distributor cap and rotor on. It stopped shutting down after that. I cleaned the MAF and nothing, but when I replaced it, It began to run like a top. I did eventually replace the fuel pump as well. It has been on several camping trips since then with no issues. Hope this helps! Love the stuff you are doing!

Dave, you seem to find some really clean vehicles? That paint on the hood is an easy fix. Now days, they make spray cans that they custom match, I think $20-$30 range. Sweet that the solar and inverter are already installed. If you keep it, you may need to swap out the batteries with LifePO4? Are you adding sink or anything else? They are like factory jackknife sofas. I had a not as nice van once with the same setup. Great for napping, lol

This van has a lot of potential. That sofa/bed slider is probably it’s best feature right now. Seems like you’ll have to replace or rebuild the transmission, though. From your track record of builds & mods, I’m really looking forward to seeing what you turn it into. Best Of Luck!

Nice rig. I'm a big believer in transmission coolers, especially on these heavy vans with automatic transmission. A low cost upgrade that you can diy in an hour or two; would be good dea on rebuilt in the desert.

Exactly what happened to your transmission when it failed? Any drivability issues like I described?
@TurfMode

Mine lost second completely. It would try to accelerate in first, shudder and then just rev. Would not shift. If your van has sat for a good portion of its life here, good bet the fuel pump is on its way out as well. I had to do the fuel pump right after the trans. 😂😂

You might consider using Jasper Engines and Transmissions for or as the unit to put in. It does with a 3 Yr 100K warranty ... it can be transferred too. ... please have your mechanic and you consider the Jaspers.. I have two vehicles myself, one as a Jasper eng and transmission (90 G20) and an older Montero motor .. Chrysler product. When I had my repair shop ... I used them a lot.. they cover the warranty really well if there are issues. pat

@@EndgameCampers Jasper is the standard for both engine and tranny rebuilds. My mechanic had them rebuild both on my 90 GMC S15. Like buttah now for 50K. Some of the driveability might also be from a faulty speed sensor on the differential. Those can mess up a lot of the elecrical systems. Looks like a great starting point.

Sweet pickup there Dave. Seems like it fell into your lap! Hoping the new transmission fixes the other issues. They could very well be caused by that. It could just be a bad torque converter causing the issues. Are you gonna sell the 4x4 van now? 😢🤔
@EndgameCampers

Thanks Jonny - I hope so. It would be very hard to part with the 4x4 van. It runs great, low cost of ownership, and I don’t think I could replace it if I sold it.

Hi Dave hope your doing ok. This is very interesting. I have 2002 ford same size same interior playlist 1 video 3 that i built with full bathroom and kitchen shower everything and i used the diesel heater everything off Amazon and it all works ok but once the build started space went away super fast. It's interesting how we got same two vans. But if when you have some time if you want watch video maybe it'll help with ideas seeing how stuff fits in. I can't wait to see what you do with it

Golf cart 6V are about 225 ah EACH .. so parallel or series etc. add up. If you call the company of the solar controller (which is actually a very good system) ask for "technical support" and ask them about how well it does with LiFePO4 ... Lead acid inside (can gas off_) It will still charge them up to safe levels and not run it into top balance as per say, ... and if so no too often.. there are ways around it but converting to LiFePO4 is still good. I have been very happy with RedOdeo (Red oh dee oh (pronounced) for my radio shack and other projects. the 90G320 has two Battleborn and they are really quit nice and quite different .. but not "necessary". I wonder if you have thought of making an air conditioner that would slide out on HD slides ... more hiding etc. Open a door let it slide out and other areas secured too but later put a way and door close behind it . full hiding.

What happened with the transmission? All the other issues you mentioned sounded like they very well could be transmission related, to put it simply. I’ve replaced many a fuel pump on 5.7, 5.3, 6.0 etc and in my experience GM fuel pumps tend to be a no start more so than drivability.
