This 'intro' to subtractive synth is better than almost all of the YT videos claiming to be 'advanced'. I've been doing production for 30 odd years and rarely do I see YT videos that make me genuinely listen. Your approach to this whole thing is fantastic - if I was a newbie I would 100% be paying for your courses.

What's with this term "Subtractive Synthesis" you just basically described the basic principles of how most Synth's work? Your explanation of the basic principles of Synth's was good. I have worked with many Synth's for a number of years and I have never heard of "Subtractive Synthesis". So what's the difference between "Subtractive Synthesis" & General understanding of how Synth's work?
@OscarUnderdog
2 жыл бұрын
Most synths are subtractive indeed, but fm or additive synths definitely work differently, so its helpful to have the word subtractive to denote we’re talking about this classic method. Its a real term though, im not making this up :)

Amazing video. How does the Filter's envelope works? So if you wanted to go from dark to light and to dark again, what Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release do you need?
@jonathanroseii905
2 жыл бұрын
start with filter at a more closed position have it open on Attack portion, as it reaches the top it will become brighter. On the decay portion it will close the filter and become darker. You can sustain your tone by effecting the sustain level, on the release portion it will close back down to the original position.

@OscarUnderdog no its OK, I learnt so much from u, but u know coz like some people have very sensitive ears and when I want ti understand something on a very very deep level with full focus, having a separate melody line in its own world just comping in the back really distracts me, but it was fun going thru the process of downloading ur video then separating the vocals from instrumentals, then I placed ur video alone with the 2 stripped tracks, and I turned the fader down on the instrumental but then whenever u played a music instrument, I would just turn up the music channel, was definitely a very memorable interactive tutorial mixing along with u lol

Oscar hello! please tell us how to make a strange wacky percussion that sounds like an LFO filter or pitch LFO. how can this be done from a percussion loop, or can it be done only with the help of synthesis. maybe there is a way to use midi melodies for such percussion. usually in a track it takes the third role, but without it the track is boring. For example, at 30 seconds, such a sound appears and develops further kzitem.info/news/bejne/kqB536OXo4OXinY

@hanswurst2490

Addition: you only explained "subtractive", not "synthesis"! Kind of trricky, how you canceled this by leaving out the multiple osc layer. And that's my discussion with freaks (brainless fans), because I claim, that my Y Workstation is a Rompler and not a Synthesizer. Besides this FM crap. Also a thing for freaks.

Is the LFO always running like the oscillator, or is it triggered the moment I press a key?
@OscarUnderdog
3 жыл бұрын
It could be either one! Most LFO's have an "R" button (for "retrigger") to turn that option on or off. People disactivate Retrigger if they want to keep the sound moving organically. People activate Retrigger if they want predictable "wubs", like dubstep growls :)
