Dr. Parra received her MS in biochemistry from Universidad Simon Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela. She completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY. She was on the faculty of Le Moyne College and Ball State University before joining UNM in 2007. In 2012, Dr. Parra was named the UNM School of Medicine Chair for the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Parra’s lab investigates the mechanisms by which cells sustain cellular pH and energy homeostasis, regulate glucose metabolism, and contribute to pathogenesis from yeast models to cancer in humans. The emphasis is on V-ATPase molecular motors physiology and pathophysiology and the downstream consequences of inhibiting V-ATPase proton transport in fungi (S. cerevisiae, C. albicans), and breast and prostate cancer.
