I thought you both were going to start off with Mercado de Lisboa. When I first got into the hobby, Lisboa was one of the early games I came across and I was very interested in the look and theme of the game. Still too intimidated to try and learn it. Someday! This is a really creative and enjoyable series!

This is one of my favorite series on any of the multitude of gaming channels I follow. Can't wait to see more! Oh...and I'd score this one for Carlo. Both were very solid paths, but I think starting a new gamer out with Race for the Galaxy might be a little too much out of the gate.

I love this series. I am taking tentative steps to introduce more complex games to my group but it is a jungle out there! So happy to have some guidance in how to do it when there are so many games to choose along the way. Thank you 🙂

As someone who has never played Lisboa I can't really comment on how good the lists were. But I can say, it really makes me want to try it now. These videos have quickly became some of my favorites on this channel. They really do something interesting. Keep up the good work guys.

We bought and played Lisboa before a trip to Portugal. For the record, I haven’t played any of the other games you both mention as stepping stones and I haven’t played any other Lacerda games. In Lisbon we had a private tour of the city. The guide asked us what we knew about Lisbon. We mentioned playing Lisboa, and learning about the earthquake, tsunami, and fire. He also liked board games and we ended up going to his apartment the next night to play a game with the theme of Portuguese wine. I think Lisboa is not as daunting as people make it out to be. I would probably rather coach someone through the game rather than cover all the rules exhaustively at the start. In the rule book they emphasize the thematic ties to the game play, and that has helped me remember the rules.

This video series is by far my favorite. I definitely used your 4 steps for Agricola and I thought it was great and yes it’s also just entertaining. Would love to see Gloomhaven, Brass Birmingham, GWT, and Scythe.

Before watching the video I asked myself which four games I’d use to do this and had three crossovers with Dylan (the only difference was game 1, where I’d have used Fort for the multi-use cards, piggybacking turn and player board where cards can be tucked). Great video, as usual. I’m saying this as someone who loves Lisboa BTW (I think I’m in a minority of one who feels it’s actually one of Vital’s easiest games to learn due to the phenomenal theming, which is exceptional even by Vital’s standards).

Great video, I've tried to get this game but it's soooo expensive to order it from the US to Europe and still haven't found a local sell. Also you can play Lisboa in Lisboa, just not really by the statue, nowadays you can't really get to the statue because there are no tunels of road crossings to get there and the trafic is wild!! But you can definitely play it in the parque Eduardo VII right next door with a great view to the statue and river. And have you played Café? or Pessoa? both games about Portugal or portuguese culture, café is an easy to play card game and Pessoa a bit more complexe game but fun because you have to incarnate the characters that Fernando Pessoa had in his head and passed on to paper in his books. So good!!!

Will definitely try out Carlos’ picks, as they seem easier stepping stones to me. Looking forward to one about Gloomhaven. Have Jaws sitting on my shelf for a year now. It was one of the first games I bought, but am not sure the theme, mechanics and gameplay is for me. So I would love for a list to discover, if I should give this type of game a try or just rightout sell Lion and stay with eurogames, which always seem intruiging. But I do wonder what I might be missing out on…

I don't know Lisboa so I can't much be a judge of this one, but I am trying to come up with a lesson plan on how to get my light gamer wife to Ark Nova. Unfortunately, some of my earliest attempts to get tile placement to click with her are failing. She finds Carcassonne too complicated and I'm not sure how to dial back another step. Maybe I can try going at it another route and try Kingdom Builder... Cards with significant text on them are also a massive hindrance for her. Dominion was definitely pushing too hard. The only success I've had so far was with worker placement as she loved Lords of Waterdeep so maybe I can climb the worker placement tower and introduce her to the other elements through that. Would appreciate suggestions from other commenters here if you have them.

So, if I had to pick 4 to keep with the video theme: New York Zoo could help with the polyomino elements of the Ark Nova map, Everdell has the tableau building, worker placement and round end actions, (and the cute theme helps sell it), Raiders of the North Sea has multiple tracks, resource management, and worker placement.... And... Er... Machi Koro? That has card purchasing from a central market, resource management, engine building... It's tough to do with only 4. If Space themes aren't a problem, Terraforming Mars has a lot of similar DNA, but a tougher sell and a harder teach. :-) Best of luck. At the end of the day, sometimes it's better to let people enjoy things at the level they're at without trying to get everyone to Lacerda/Mindclash level. :-)

You could always play a solo game of Ark Nova together, so you can talk through your turns.

@@kilinor Thanks for the suggestions! She loves Splendor so I've got the card market, resource management and engine building down. I think the hardest pill to swallow for her is anything related to spatial orientation puzzles and learning about lots of unique cards (she doesn't like Machi Koro for the fact that there are so many cards that do different things). You're probably right that I might have to give up on Ark Nova though. At least it has a solo mode. :)

I have Vinhos but I really want to try Vinhos Deluxe. Sounds like it simplifies the rules and streamlines the gameplay a bit, which might help it get played more in my collection. Plus, you can't go wrong with the Ian O'Toole art. - Carlo
