This videos is outdated (1980) and should be updated. Their products are well known and are hi-end high quality, our company is using them for over 30 years on all our installations. Proper engineered of the rope gripper base plate is required to ensure the rope gripper will withstand forces generated by the elevator.

Wow that's is one awesome invention. I have heard many stories of fatalities decapitations etc caused by elevators moving with doors open. The most recent was a young woman in Moscow in Feb 2014 who was decapitated when the elevator doors shut on her and the car moved up decapitating her. I just hope every elevator owner in the world pays the small price to buy your excellent invention because its a small price to save a life!

Sometimes when doors are open on a floor a slipping brake could cause car to start moving with gravity. Could a laser detect any of this movement with door open and deploy the rope gripper? Also how long does rope gripper take to fully bind and lock rope if their is any fault? Could it stop an elevator car within say 5 inches ?

+ELPaso1990TX A17.1/B44 code permits a maximum of 48" before stopping for unintended car movement away from the landing with the hoistway door not in the locked position and the car door not in the closed position, with deceleration not to exceed 1g. I recall 16" as being the actual maximum being designed for. In the worst case worth considering with car overloaded to 120% of its maximum and brake total failure the acceleration down would be only 0.2g (6-7 f/s/s).

Compare to a double brake the expensive rope gripper is a lemon! If the pads are worn out or the wear switch is not set properly (happen a lot). This may need to be manually reset after the power goes off. Pump and is capacitor, solenoid are also often defective and is not mean to work many consecutive times, not talking about messy oil leak when unit is aging. My advice as a Elevator Mechanic is stay away form that and think about something else with a better warranty!

The rope gripper didn’t work for the World Trade Centers elevators.
