He’s well looked after by a ton of marine biologists. He lives free around fish farms, and finds comfort from white bottomed boats. He doesn’t seek out as much human contact as he once did, and he hunts for his own food. He’s happy and independent. Who knows if he will meet a solitary female to share life with. But….he’s ok.

You say that like this is a normal occurrence, which it is not. This is *very* unusual. Additionally, Hvaldimir was in general left alone and people were told to let him be. When he was swimming around my city, people only took pictures of him from a distance. Specialists worked with him, trying to teach him to live on his own, and now he seems to have decided to live permanently in Hammerfest. He's currently residing in a remote fjord where people don't bother him, and voluntarily swims to the docks whenever he wants to see human people. He has reportedly gained weight and looks happy and healthy, which means that the efforts to teach him to find food helped.

@@ethanevenson3855 Yes, he was injured by a propeller, which is usually how sea mammals are hurt by boats. Though he wasn't in a deathly critical condition, the injury most likely caused him some sickness, which he has since recovered from. We actually saw him swimming in the horizon when visiting the region this summer (it's hours away), so it seems he really has chosen his home now. I also read a detailed update about him from exactly a month ago today, as there are people who check on him every now and then, where it was noted that he is healthier than ever. He is eating well, and had gained weight. People mostly want to leave him alone, unless he seeks out human attention himself.

@@Zeverinsen This is a false narrative and we have no idea you would spread this. Our volunteers are on-site with Hvaldimir every single day. He hasn't been near Hammerfest for 3 years. And he hasn't been in a "remote" fjord ever. He has lived full time at salmon farms since he left Hammerfest harbor. He is not 'wild and free' like you're imagining. He stays all day under a salmon farm boat except to feed, and he sleeps alone under their boats. He gets injured often, and the salmon farmers don't want him there as he is a workplace hazard. Our organization deals with the problems he causes every single day. He does not belong here. He belongs with other belugas. Our goal is to relocate him to a reserve where he can be rehabilitated and unlearn his training and habits toward humans. After rehabilitation, our goal is for him to be released with a wild pod of belugas. We thank you for stopping the spread of falsehoods about this whale. The only one you're hurting is Hvaldimir!

If you are watching this video now, please know that Hvaldimir has decided to live in a remote fjord in Hammerfest where there are basically no people, and voluntarily swims to the docks when he wants to interact with humans. When he does go to the people, he's being treated nicely. He is alive and well! On the 5th of September he was reported to be looking happy, healthy and had gained some weight, as the training he received a while ago to catch his own food has seemingly paid off. I don't think the state is going to forcefully move Hvaldimir to Iceland, since he has been living just fine as a Hammerfest resident for a long time now. If he wants to leave, he is free to go whenever he wants, but considering he's stayed in the same place for over 6 months and could leave at any time, I think he's happy where he is.
@onewhaleorg
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, if you're watching this video you'll see he left Hammerfest 2 1/2 years ago. The OneWhale team of volunteers is currently with him hundreds of miles away. We have documented him constantly for his entire time in Norway and he has never taken residency at a quiet fjord. He lives, always, at busy industrial salmon farms and shipping ports. He currently sleeps under a salmon farm barge. Any posts suggesting otherwise are fake news. Further, he has never been trained to hunt for food, unless that was training he received from his mother. He was trained to eat dead food in captivity, which he continued to do in Hammerfest for 3 months, until he surprised his caregivers by leaving and eating on his own. Finally, we don't want him to be taken to Iceland. We'd like Norway to provide him his own protected fjord where 300 people per day do not have unlimited access to him. Further, we'd like bring other rescued belugas to join him. Aside from your assessment that he is "happy", all whale scientists agree that belugas are highly social and need other whales to truly be happy. We agree with their assessments, and would not classify Hvaldimir as "happy" and we see him in person every day. Finally, the salmon farms do not want this whale living in their farms and find him to be a problem. Their solution is to euthanize him. So, we at OneWhale would like to off the idea of a nature reserve in Norway as the alternative. Thank you for your interest and for getting the facts.

He's too attached the humans. He was likely born or raised in captivity since very young and doesnt even know how to hunt for food. He stayed behind and was taught to venture outward to slowly integrate back to the wild. The real shame comes when the humans track him and impose danger like parasites bacteria viruses and propellor injuries upon vladimir. The other two whales may or may not accept him but even if they do, Vladimir must detach but the ocean is very scary for a single whale. There are alot of dangers out there for him. Can only pray for this precious baby. Most whales released in the wild from captivity don't live long. Perhaps in time by using sonar vladimir can tune into a pod or little white and little grey. I am genuinely curious if there could be a private fishery established for him in a fjord, that was not blocked off. That way he would have a steady source of food that would prevent conflict with the commercial fisheries, and it would attract him to an area that could be free of boats. All I can think of is that after being kept in captivity and trained, all he wants is to be free. It would be such a cruel irony to keep him captive in a relatively tiny space (versus the vast distances a whale can traverse) out of a motive to protect him. Perhaps his freedom to choose where and how he lives is what is truly most important to protect? You can kill the spirit while trying to most perfectly preserve the body.

Onewhale is just regurgitating old information on this whale, there has been a campaign and god knows how much money donated to his cause for 2 years now. The fact is they want to keep this whale in Norway when there is already a large beluga sanctuary in Iceland that would be perfect for him. Id be willing to bet that the money that has already been generated would be enough to transport him there, but that wont happen and I aswell as thousands of others will likely never see our money again. and I doubt we will see it being used to benefit him as nothing has changed since this campaigns inception. I have also noticed that in every instance than one whale mentions a sanctuary, they insist it has to be a new one, and always say it has to be atlas 2 k long. These are all the red flags of a scam and its sickening that these people use the kindness of gentle souls in order to profit. Good luck pal

We explored that option 2 years ago, and the fact is those two whales went to sea for a minute, and then were put into a concrete tank where they have been sitting ever since. It is also owned by the massive for-profit captivity corporation Merlin Entertainment. So yeah, you're right... we DO have to build a new (real) marine reserve, owned by a nation, not a company. This project has received the first stage of approval. And when it's creaetd, we hope we can gwe3t those two poor Iceland belugas out of the tank and into Norway's fjords. Stay classy Bricktop.

Leave the whales alone and they will be fine. Human intervention is the problem. Man thinks that he's God and knows best

In Hvaldimirs case it's more like ask him to leave humans alone. He constantly seek human interaction and during June and July Hvaldimir have been on the swedish west coast. Hopefully he find his way up to Norwegian waters again and a possible transport to northern Norway or ideally Svalbard to meet with his own kind.

That's not entirely true .. July is a problem, but for the most part it's calm around the whale. The locals protect him and make sure he is well. Check for updates and see what you find now .. The whale is free and healthy. He's doing very well now that the film crew is staying away

Hvaldimir is reportedly healthy and happy :-) He's living in a remote fjord in Hammerfest, and sometimes swims to a local dock to see people.

They should transfer him to the beluga sanctuary in Iceland! I really don’t know why they aren’t doing it
@AnityC

@@ROYAL_REBEL He is treated like a prize by norway and not like an animal with very specific needs. They rather act like this is a spectacle that he is "free" , although he is actually lonely and risks his life to socialize with humans than noone at all. It's also a great way to attract tourists as said and shown in this video, one way to attract any tourists at all and have at least a small tourist income than nothing especially at the time of this pandemic. And all this at the expense of an innocent soul who is moreover of an endangered species. It is very sad actually.
